Nokia N9 upcoming update to bring video conferencing, folders a la iOS

Nokia has pleasantly surprised us by delivering timely updates to its Nokia N9 one and only MeeGo device, and another major update, PR 1.2 is on the way. The update will enable the front facing camera and will let you use it to video call your friends. It also adds folders working in iOS-like fashion, support for copy-paste in the browser and other enhancements.
MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan is definitely a more refined version and adds a needed coat of polish to the otherwise very innovative Swipe UI. Some of the new features like the folders one might spark controversy over how new they are when compared with other operating systems, but they’re a welcome addition anyway. The camera application and ...

Nokia's Lumia 710, its first Windows Phone for the US, is on sale now

Nokia's Lumia 710, its first Windows Phone for the US, is on sale now

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG1

It's been a long time coming, but you can finally buy a Nokia Windows Phone in the US. T-Mobile launched the Lumia 710 today in black and white for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and with the requisite 2-year contract. We still think it's a fair price, despite the few qualms we had with the device when we reviewed it, but the forthcoming Lumia 900 puts a damper on our enthusiasm for this device a bit. However, it's not for us; it's for first-time smartphone buyers, and still seems like a solid choice for that market. Despite the Lumia 710's status as an entry-level device, it's exciting to see Nokia have a major US release for the first time in months.

Nokia confirms Lumia 900 doesn't have Pentile display

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

While we knew the Lumia 900 would have "Clear Black" AMOLED display, what we didn't know was whether it would sport a Pentile Matrix layout (like the Lumia 800). Well, fret no more friends, it's official -- the Lumia 900 has a full battery of subpixels in an RGB array. Nokia confirmed as such earlier via it's US Twitter account in reply to a user's inquiry. Between LTE and the RGB panel it looks like Nokia has its first genuinely lust-worthy Mango device on its hands.

Nokia CEO: We won't fragment Windows Phone

Nokia CEO: We won't fragment Windows Phone

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: NOKIA

During the CES 2012 introduction of the Lumia 900, Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop was touting the fact that the company would have exclusive apps from heavy-hitters on its Lumia line before any other Windows Phone got it. While Nokia needs to stand out from the crowd, Elop clearly stated that the company would never do anything to fragment the platform.

As Nokia and Elop have said many times, it’s now a battle of ecosystems between iOS, Android and Windows Phone. While Apple controls most of the aspects of iOS (the App Store still relies on third-parties for content), Nokia is in a trickier position because the success of HTC and Samsung Windows Phones could eventually help Nokia by raising aware...

We reached out to Microsoft for comment, and a company spokesperson had this to say:

Nokia Lumia 710 Will Be Canada’s First 2nd-Gen Windows Phone

Posted on Jan 06, 2012 by MG1

Canada has always been a bit neglected in Microsoft’s Windows Phone push (even with competitions as awesome as this one), and so far not one second-gen device has been launched there. However, that is finally set to change, with the Nokia Lumia 710 and subseqently Lumia 900 arriving at some unknown dates, according to a tipster of MobileSyrup. We’re barely a week into 2012 and rumors are already resurfacing that at some point over the next 12 months Nokia will sell their smartphone unit to Microsoft. We can’t remember the first time such rumors appeared, but we do know the last time we covered this story. Just a couple of weeks ago Danske Bank claimed that during the first half of 2012 Nokia would do the unthinkable and sell their smartphone unit to Stephen Elop’s former employeer. Today, thanks to a string of Twitter messages from Eldar Murtazin, Editor in Chief of Mobile-Review, we now have more details as to what’s going to go down. Here are the relevant messages:
