Nokia: charging cellphones using a solar panel is possible but challenging

The results are in from Nokia's solar charging experiment, and it doesn't look good for those hoping to charge up their cellphones from sun rays in future. The Finnish handset maker has been using prototype solar panels for the past six months, across a variety of countries, to test the viability of sun driven cellphone charging. Nokia's tests involved a customized C1-02 device (dumbphone), and five participants with different lifestyles and local weather conditions.

Nokia Lumia 800 takes off...and lands

Nokia Lumia 800 takes off...and lands

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG1

We have seen very creative ways to advertise a smartphone, but in India, Nokia might have started something that we could see spreading around the globe. To promote the Nokia Lumia 800 in India, the manufacturer painted the name and colors of the device on the side of an Indian Airlines Jet Airways plane. Of course, we don't expect too many people to view the ad while the plane is in flight. However, with the trend lately to leave passengers sitting on the tarmac for hours without Air Conditioning, food or a usable bathroom, this captive audience will get to look at the ad while waiting to take off.
Even better for Nokia, they can honestly say that the Nokia Lumia 800 is taking off. And even...

Nokia Ace may get 'halo' status on AT&T, $100m marketing

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

The Nokia Ace will get top-tier treatment when it arrives on AT&T in March, according to rumors on Tuesday. AT&T would give the phone hero-level treatment, BetaNews heard, both advertising and pushing it at every level. The carrier is considered the main partner for Windows Phone, but until now purportedly wasn't giving Microsoft's OS full attention.

Nokia Lumia 710 for T-Mobile pops up on eBay

Nokia Lumia 710 for T-Mobile pops up on eBay

Posted on Jan 02, 2012 by MG1

One way to get your hands on the Nokia Lumia 710 for T-Mobile is to sit tight and wait until January 11 when the smartphone is scheduled to be released. The handset will be priced at $50 after rebate should you sign a 2-year service agreement with the carrier. However, if you are not of the patient kind, or if the contract part of the deal you are not too fond of, what might interest you is the T-Mobile Lumia 710, which is currently for sale on eBay.
Currently, the highest bid stands at $355, which is a reasonable price for a mid-range Windows Phone handset. Besides, you don't need to put your signature under 2-year contracts or anything. Judging by the item's description and the attached im...

Seiko Epson settles Nokia antitrust lawsuit for $80 million

Seiko Epson settles Nokia antitrust lawsuit for $80 million

Posted on Dec 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: EpsonNOKIA

In another case of LCD manufacturers getting into hot water over price fixing, Seiko Epson announced that it's settling an antitrust lawsuit brought by Nokia back in November of 2009 to the tune of $80 million. The allegations against Epson and its subsidiaries are just one of many leveled by Nokia, with similar suits filed by the company against Samsung, Toshiba, Sharp, LG Display, and others. The LCD industry seems to be regularly hit by these allegations, and earlier this month the South Korean government fined manufacturers including Samsung and Sharp $388 million over similar offences. Epson says in a statement that this settlement is not a sign of the company admitting wrongdoing; rath...

Nokia begins Belle roll-out; Updates from Feb 2012

Nokia begins Belle roll-out; Updates from Feb 2012

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Nokia has begun shipping updated versions of the N8, C7 and C6-01 with Nokia Belle, aka Symbian Belle with a newly fettled UI, while an upgrade program for existing owners will begin in February 2012. China will be the first to get the updated new phones, the company says, with the rest of the world following suit.
Those who have already bought a Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia E6, Nokia X7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia C7 or Nokia Oro will have a couple of months at least to wait, however. This isn’t likely to go down well with Nokia fans, who saw similar delays in updates when Symbian Anna was released earlier in the year. Several complained that Nokia was prioritizing availability for new owners and leav...

Nokia's CES 2012 press invite confirms Windows Phone device launch

Nokia's CES 2012 press invite confirms Windows Phone device launch

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Next month thousands of people will convene in Las Vegas, Nevada to attend the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. If you’ve never been to CES, it’s worth checking out. If you’re a member of the press however, CES is about as terrifying as being diagnosed with testicular cancer. It’s three days of pushing, shoving, running to meetings, networking, drinking, and eating stuff that’s called food, but really it’s just a cocktail of cheap highly processed chemicals. After my fourth or fifth CES I made a promise to myself to never, ever, go there again. It’s honestly that bad. Anyway, why is CES so freaking important in the first place? It’s where nearly every company on the face of the planet announc...

Nokia says next software update for Lumia 800 will address new battery concerns

Nokia says next software update for Lumia 800 will address new battery concerns

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Nokia has announced that the forthcoming software update for the Lumia 800 that is due to arrive early next year will include a fix for recent battery life issues cited by users. This is the second software update issued for the Lumia 800, with the first one being distributed earlier this month. Users have reported that the Lumia 800 is reporting less battery life than it should be, and Nokia confirms that this is indeed the case. Nokia does note that there is nothing wrong with the battery itself, and the problem can be addressed with a software update. Also coming with the update are more performance enhancements for the Lumia 800. Nokia says the update is on track for an early 2012 releas...

Nokia refutes rumors that it’s leaving Finland

Nokia refutes rumors that it’s leaving Finland

Posted on Dec 19, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Ever since Stephen Elop, the first non-Finn to become CEO of Nokia, left his position as president of Microsoft’s Business Division to join Nokia, there has been chatter that he may move the company to the United States.
With the company experiencing decline, then cutting thousands of jobs in Finland, the speculations did not seem that outlandish. For those that thought these events would cause Elop to considering moving the headquarters out of Finland, on Sunday, he put the kibosh on the rumors by saying, “As long as I am the CEO, the headquarters is in Espoo. That's our home, our sense of belonging.”

Nokia Lumia 800 may get DLNA support

Nokia Lumia 800 may get DLNA support

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

It's been done by other manufacturers and it seems likely that Nokia will be doing it too: bringing DLNA support to the Nokia Lumia 800 via an app from the Windows Phone Marketplace. This is still a rumor at this point, and possibly not even a very well sourced rumor, but still one that seems pretty believable.
DLNA is one of the top notch features for electronics these days. It is really just a compatibility standard set forth by the Digital Living Network Alliance, so all of your media-filled devices can play well together on your home network. This means being able to share music or video across your computer, mobile devices, TV and stereo. Luckily, even if a device doesn't come with the...

Will the Lumia 710 be taking the cross-Atlantic journey all on its lonesome? We'll just have to wait 'til Wednesday to see.

Nokia Lumia 900 looking like a slim LTE device

Nokia Lumia 900 looking like a slim LTE device

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

More info has come out about the upcoming Nokia Lumia 900 (formerly the Nokia Ace), which will be the super-sized version of the Lumia 800 for the US market, and it looks like the device will be packing LTE, although as yet it is unclear what networks the phone will run on.
It is assumed that the device will be on AT&T, because AT&T has been the biggest supporter of Windows Phone devices among US carriers, and AT&T needs more flagship devices to push its newly forming LTE network. However, it is also possible that there will be a Verizon variant of the Lumia 900, because Verzion has said that it wanted to see more LTE devices from Windows Phone in order to support the platform. This may be ...

Nokia Lumia 800 also a Vodafone Netherlands best seller

Nokia Lumia 800 also a Vodafone Netherlands best seller

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

We know the Nokia Lumia 800 is one of the best sellers on KPN, the largest Dutch network, but MyNokiaBlog reports the same is true at Vodafone Netherlands also, where it shares the lime light with such luminaries as the Samsung Galaxy S 2, HTC Sensation and iPhone 4.
An IDC analyst recently predicted only 380,000 Nokia Lumia 800’s would be sold over the 6 weeks it has been available. Considering the millions of handsets sold each quarter in Europe that seems a pretty low estimate for a best selling handset.
