Nokia seeking buyer for Vertu, says Financial Times

Nokia seeking buyer for Vertu, says Financial Times

Filed in: NOKIA

FT is citing an unnamed source today as saying that Nokia has retained Goldman Sachs as an advisor in a bid to sell its Vertu subsidiary, the UK-based purveyor of handmade ultra-luxury phones. Though you might think that the market for $10,000 handsets running Symbian is an extraordinarily small one, various reports over the past couple years have claimed that the division — which doesn't report its own revenue figures — is highly profitable, so it stands to reason that Nokia could end up fetching a strong price for it. Current rumors have a number of private equity firms looking at striking a deal, but the speculation is that luxury brands (some of which, like Prada and Armani, have taken t...

Nokia Lumia 900 and Champagne pop up in dev records, possible Tango build makes appearance

Nokia Lumia 900 and Champagne pop up in dev records, possible Tango build makes appearance

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG1

Nokia's field testers must be avid fans of the Times of India Windows Phone app, because unannounced phones like the Lumia 900 and Champagne are beginning to show up in its stats. This tells us nothing of specs, but here's what we learned: both phones are real, and they're not the same exact device. The app also discovered a new build of Windows Phone called 7.10.8725 in its system, a hint that one of these two handsets -- likely the Champagne -- may be running on the next OS update known as Tango. Does this mean the Champagne is destined for emerging markets? We're hoping to find out in Vegas at CES, just a month from now.

Nokia Lumia 800 is starting to get its very first firmware update

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG1

Following through on a promise made back towards the end of last month, the first firmware update for the Nokia Lumia 800 is starting to roll out as we speak – bringing along some much needed fixes and tweaks to improve the high status Windows Phone.
So far, the update is being pushed out in countries where the handset is made available, and carries along quite a few performance and usability enhancements. However, it’s not clearly known if it directly addresses the handset’s power efficiency, which has plagued some owners with erratic battery life. Instead, the changelog for the firmware update mentions it offering the following:

Nokia Lumia 800 blowing past other Windows Phones, bringing new users to Windows Phone in France

Nokia Lumia 800 blowing past other Windows Phones, bringing new users to Windows Phone in France

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

According to data released by Arnaud Michelet, developer of the France Trafic use of the Nokia Lumia 800 shot up over a 5 week period, overtaking all of the current Windows Phone 7 handsets, both first and second generation.
There is no corresponding dip in the use of current handsets, showing the Lumia 800 is drawing new users to the platform, expanding the installed base by about 1/3 in our quick estimate.
Unless Nokia has been promoting the app, the data clearly shows Nokia’s media blitz is having a good effect. Another data point to add to the many others which show Nokia sales are pretty good after all, despite some misinformed analysts.

Unlocked version of the Nokia Lumia 800 lands on Amazon for $649.99

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Are you still waiting around to pick up the highly regarded Nokia Lumia 800, but don’t feel like importing the Windows Phone Mango device? Well, you can now purchase one directly from Amazon – though, it’s still from a third-party seller.
In any event, the listing is for an unlocked version of the Nokia Lumia 800, which means you can pop in your SIM and start using it right away. Naturally, AT&T customers should take notice of this one seeing that the handset is compatible to work with the carrier’s HSPA network. Meanwhile, T-Mobile customers can still opt to use the handset with the carrier, but considering that it doesn’t support Tmo’s 1700MHz band, you’ll be surfing the web on EDGE speeds...

Nokia Siemens drops WiMax business, NewNet picks it up

Posted on Dec 02, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIASiemens

Nokia Siemens Networks is selling its WiMax business to NewNet Communication Technologies, in a further sign that the long-term future is not looking too bright for WiMax in Europe and the States. NewNet didn't disclose details of the deal, but expects to close it out by the end of the year and take on around 300 employees. The company said it was interested in providing WiMax infrastructure on a global basis, but Nokia Siemens clearly didn't consider the technology a priority in its restructuring efforts — especially with an LTE Lumia 800 likely making its way to the US next year.

Most people who either already picked up the N9 or are seriously considering buying it this holiday shopping season know full well that it’s the first, last, and only device that the Finnish handset maker will release running MeeGo/Maemo/Harmattan. That means developers don’t really want to support it since there’s no future in the ecosystem, not to mention the fact that Nokia refused the launch N9 in some of the world’s largest markets, instead opting to release it in a limited number of smaller countries. Now that being said, Nokia’s got a track record of keeping their devices up to date. If you’re lucky enough to own a Symbian^3 device then you’ve already experienced the upgrade to Symbia...

Nokia Lumia 800 hits UK stores, preorder demand leaves Orange UK glowing

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

As Nokia's first Windows Phone lights up shop fronts across Britain, Orange has informed us that the Lumia 800 has attracted the most attention it's ever seen for a Nokia device. Based on preorders, the smartphone has trumped both the critically acclaimed N95 and the 5800, while we're sure the gratis Xbox 360 for upgraders hasn't hurt demand -- 50 percent of those looking to pick up the polycarbonate phone are already Orange customers. The carrier has told us that an Xbox-based offer for new customers looking to pick up the Nokia-coated Windows Phone is also in the pipeline -- something for UK network hoppers to get excited about.

Nokia owes Romania $10 million; tax authorities seize assets

Posted on Nov 14, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Nokia’s local assets were seized by Romanian tax authorities on Friday after it was revealed the company’s Romania-based subsidiary owes the government $10 million, Bloomberg said Friday. “We decided to seize the assets as a precautionary measure to prevent Nokia from selling them before they pay their debt to the state,” head of Romania’s tax authority Sorin Blejnar said. “This won’t affect the activity of the factory.” Nokia announced in September that it would close its operations in the country, although the origin of the vendor’s $10 million in debt is unclear. According to Convert News, the debt may be related to bills that Nokia owes for transporting its materials in the country. Noki...
