Nokia looking into tablets

Nokia may have posted a massive $1.7 billion loss for Q1 of this year, but the company is trying to fight back with its Lumia Windows Phones in partnership with Microsoft. What else does the company have up its sleeve going forward? Jorma Ollila, chairman of Nokia, has revealed that the company is looking into the possibility of a tablet, and some other form factors too.

Nokia design chief confirms tablet

Nokia is working on a tablet, the company’s design chief has reportedly confirmed, with the exec supposedly spending a third of his time on the well-rumored project. “We are working on it” Marko Ahtisaari confirmed to Finnish magazine Kauppalehti Optio, Reuters reports, though declined to be more specific about the incoming slate. However, rumors earlier this week suggested a Windows 8 tablet was in the pipeline for later this year.

While discussing his intentions to expand Nokia’s presence in the United States, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recently made comments that suggest his company could have a Windows 8 tablet in the pipeline. “There’s a new tablet opportunity coming,” Elop told Bloomberg in a recent interview. “We see the opportunity. Unquestionably, that will change the dynamics [of the market].” Elop described Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system as a “supercharged” version of its Windows Phone operating system, implying a hint of interest in using the OS on a tablet. Yesterday Nokia unveiled the new Nokia Lumia Windows Phones at the Nokia World 2011. There is though more going on at this Nokia show. CNET captured the Nokia Kinetic Device prototype on camera. Nokia Kinetic is a tablet prototype that features a flexible screen. You can hold it with two hands and it would scroll through music collections or photo albums when twisted. Bending the Nokia Kinetic inward or outward zooms photos in and out or paused and played music.
