Verizon planning streaming video service, gets ready to take on Netflix

Verizon planning streaming video service, gets ready to take on Netflix

We can't say we're entirely shocked by the move but, according to Reuters, Verizon is getting ready to enter the streaming media market. Reports are that the company is in talks with programming partners to provide content for a Netflix-like video service that it could offer to customers not currently covered by its high-speed FiOS network. Obviously, details are scant, and there's no telling when it might actually launch, but you can bet its competitors will be watching closely... and we don't just mean Netflix. Cable and satellite TV providers are already wary of the public embracing cord-cutting -- when one of their own seems to be encouraging the behavior it sets off a lot of alarms.

Some of Verizon's 4G LTE is OUT; Big Red working to resume service

Some of Verizon's 4G LTE is OUT; Big Red working to resume service

Verizon engineers are currently hard at work, trying to get the carrier's 4G LTE network up and running after complaints from customers that those with 4G handsets are not sending or receiving data. Verizon says that 3G voice and data are not affected by the outage. Some 4G customers have had their phone shift down to 3G coverage while others have had no service at all. According to Big Red, voice calls and texts are still going through (which brings a sigh of relief to those who voted for their favorite X Factor contestant on Wednesday night, using a Verizon LTE phone to text their selection).

Verizon CEO says shared data plans coming in 2012

Verizon CEO says shared data plans coming in 2012

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Verizon is gearing up to offer shared data plans sometime in 2012. That's straight from CEO Lowell McAdam, who told the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference this morning, "I think in 2012 we will see it... Getting to one bill and getting to account-level pricing is our goal." Sharing data the way they do family plan minutes is something many consumers have been clamoring for and AT&T's CEO Ralph de la Vega indicated earlier this year that his carrier was planning to offer such an option. Soon enough you might be able to buy a chunk of minutes and data then pile on the lines for a flat rate.

Verizon CEO "thinks" shared data plans will come next year

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

There has been talk of shared, or family, data plans coming to Verizon Wireless for months, but it has all been of the "sometime in the future" variety. Now, Verizon Communications CEO Lowell McAdam has offered a timeframe, albeit an extremely broad timeframe, for when we can expect to see the carrier implement shared data plans.
Speaking at a communications conference, McAdam stated "I think in 2012 we will see it," referring to the shared data plans. He continued, "We have been working on this for a couple of years. Getting to one bill and getting to account-level pricing is our goal." Unfortunately, he did not offer specifics as to how a shared data plan would work or how much it would co...

iPhone for Verizon Wireless - how it compares to other versions

iPhone for Verizon Wireless - how it compares to other versions

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Another day, another question to answer. This time one of our readers asked me whether the iPhone 4S sold by Verizon Wireless is any better than what two other big carriers (AT&T and Sprint) are offering.
The short answer is – NO! You’ll get the best experience with AT&T’s iPhone 4S because it’s the only one that supports simultaneous voice and data. While iPhone 4S sold by Sprint and Verizon Wireless rely on a CDMA network, AT&T’s version connects to a GSM one, which allows this capability [data and voice at the same time]. In real-life this means that you’ll still be getting push notifications from the web even when you’re in the middle of a call.

White Motorola Droid RAZR for Verizon Wireless now official

White Motorola Droid RAZR for Verizon Wireless now official

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

The Motorola Droid RAZR for Verizon Wireless is arguably one of the prettiest smartphones on the market right now. If it weren’t for the terrible AMOLED screen and the questionable battery life, then this writer would have a hard time resisting the urge to pick one up this holiday shopping season. So last month when rumors started floating around the internet that Verizon would be introducing a white variant of the Droid RAZR, you can understand that many Android fans started foaming from the mouth with anticipation. Well now it’s official, and … meh, it’s actually not what we were expecting. In fact, it shouldn’t even be called white. It’s basically the same black Droid RAZR we’ve already r...

Verizon to benefit most from iPhone 4S: expected to add 1.2 million subscribers

Verizon to benefit most from iPhone 4S: expected to add 1.2 million subscribers

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Verizon is expected to be the carrier that reaps the most benefits out of the iPhone 4S stateside. A leaked memo by JP Morgan hints that Verizon Wireless will increase its subscriber count by 1.2 million in the fourth quarter, largely due to the iPhone 4S being available on the carrier since day 1 of its launch. AT&T, the carrier the iPhone originally launched on, is projected to only add 450,000 new subscribers, while Sprint is expected to boost its subscriber base by 250,000 in Q4 2011.
T-Mobile, in contrast, is the only one of the four major US carriers that doesn’t have the iPhone and the forecast is for its subscribers to decrease by 400,000.

Verizon 4G LTE network turns one year old today

Verizon 4G LTE network turns one year old today

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Though it seems like just yesterday that we were first unboxing the HTC ThunderBolt, the first smartphone to roll out on Verizon’s still-impressive 4G LTE network here in the USA, it’s been one year to the day that the network has been active. On the first day the network was officially deployed, it covered an already impressive 39 markets, this eclipsed at this one year marker by the current 190 markets the Verizon 4G LTE network sits in today. While the Verizon LTE network has been their “4G” offering since they originally started promoting the “4G” term, they mention the competition as being less prepared for the eventual oncoming of higher speed networks – sarcasm in tow, of course.

Comcast to sell Verizon Wireless products in 4 markets in early 2012

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Comcast president Neil Smit confirmed during a UBS investor conference on Monday that his company will begin to bundle Verizon Wireless products with its services in early 2012. Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks announced late last week that Verizon Wireless had agreed to purchase spectrum from SpectrumCo, joint venture created by the three firms, for $3.6 billion. Verizon Wireless will use the spectrum to build out its 4G LTE wireless network and agreed to allow each company to sell its products and services through wholesale channels. Smit told Reuters that Comcast will still compete head-to-head with Verizon Wireless’s parent company, Verizon Communications, which owns ...

Samsung GALAXY Nexus training material for Verizon resellers leaks

Samsung GALAXY Nexus training material for Verizon resellers leaks

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Let's say you are a rep for a third party Verizon reseller and the Samsung GALAXY Nexus has finally been launched. If someone comes into the store asking questions about the device, you are going to be glad that Big Red provided you with some training material to study. "Yes, Mr. Smith, the screen on the Samsung GALAXY Nexus is the world's first HD Super AMOLED display allowing you to watch YouTube videos and movies in high-def.
Plenty of space on the training material was given to Google+ and its Circles, Hangouts and Messenger applications. Of course, Verizon provided a list of the Samsung GALAXY Nexus' game changing features such as the curved display which helps prevent scratches on the ...

Google Wallet to be blocked by Verizon on Samsung GALAXY Nexus?

Google Wallet to be blocked by Verizon on Samsung GALAXY Nexus?

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

While many potential buyers of the Samsung GALAXY Nexus didn't give it a second thought, others figured that they would be buying a device that would probably work with Google Wallet. Like the only other smartphone that supports Google Wallet (the Google Nexus 4G), the GALAXY Nexus will have the necessary NFC chip embedded in the battery door. Unfortunately, Verizon will not allow the first Android 4.0 phone to access Google Wallet.
The reason for this is quite simple. Big Red is one of the companies involved with Google Wallet competitor ISIS, which also uses NFC technology. Others involved with ISIS include manufacturers HTC, LG, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, RIM and Samsung. Other carriers inv...

Verizon's Galaxy Nexus updated to Android 4.1.0, finally ready to dance?

Verizon's Galaxy Nexus updated to Android 4.1.0, finally ready to dance?

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

A lucky human known as "Bradgog" posted the above screenshot to a thread on My Droid World last night, ostensibly heralding the arrival of Android 4.1 on Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Nexus. As you can see in the image (purportedly taken on Verizon's 3G network), the firmware update appears to bring a new baseband radio to the handset, which, in turn, may explain the delay in bringing the device to Big Red's stable. It's hard to say for sure, though we should have a clearer idea any day now.

Verizon has confirmed it will offer its FiOS TV customers the ability to tune into their service directly from an Xbox 360, as part of a sweeping update to the Microsoftconsole.
Originally announced at E3 in June, the addition of live TV content to the console is a landmark move in the growing trend of offering more than gaming content to today's consoles.

Leaked Verizon document hints at white Droid RAZR, leaves speculation to us

Posted on Nov 29, 2011 by MG1

Is there a white Droid RAZR looming on the horizon? According to the above screenshot, there is. Obtained by the folks over at Droid Life, this image purports to give a glimpse into Verizon's device management system, which apparently boasts a previously unmentioned white version of Motorola's ultra-thin handset. If it's legit, the RAZR would join the likes of the Droid 2 Global and R2D2 alongside the manufacturer's predominantly white offerings, though Motorola has yet to confirm its existence. Details, then, are still scarce, but we'll let you know as soon as we hear more about any alabaster arrivals.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus pre-orders may begin tomorrow

Posted on Nov 29, 2011 by MG1

There still has been no official word from Verizon, Google or Samsung about the impending release of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but the rumors surrounding the launch are beginning to coalesce into believable information.
According to Computerworld, sources at Verizon have confirmed a number of key pieces of the puzzle. Apparently, the leak we saw over the holiday weekend about the on-contract price of the Nexus being $199 is also true. And, new information has confirmed both the release date and the pre-order dates.
One of the most helpful reports even came from a customer. Mike Peak apparently contacted Verizon to detail his anger over the handling of this release, after a number of e-mails...
