LG Spectrum now available on Verizon for $199

LG Spectrum now available on Verizon for $199

Posted on Jan 20, 2012 by MG1

The LG Spectrum is now available from Verizon Wireless for about $200 with a new two-year contract and the latest 4G LTE smartphone packs quite the punch with a beautiful HD screen.
The device isn’t dramatically different from the LG Nitro we saw earlier but the Spectrum is for Verizon Wireless and it will be a 4G LTE handset. We can also look forward to a 4.5 True HD IPS display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8 megapixel camera on the rear, 1.3 megapixel camera and all the other connectivity goodies you’d expect from a smartphone like this.
While we’ve seen multiple phones with a 720p screen, the True HD IPS display is quite a sight to behold and I found LG’s HD screens to be some of the best...

Verizon partners with Comcast, now offering cable TV

Verizon partners with Comcast, now offering cable TV "quad-play" bundles

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless acquired 122 AWS spectrum licenses late in 2011 from a JV of cable companies including Comcast, and the partnership between the two has quickly grown. Now, the two companies are ready to launch their new product bundle - wireless, cable-TV, landline, and residential Internet in Seattle and Portland, Oregon. The marketing effort will continue and spread this year, and by 2013 it’s expected to cover major US markets. Verizon Wireless will promote Comcast’s Xfiiniti in its stores, while Comcast will in turn promote Big Red services on the phone and online. But the most exciting aspect of the partnership - the new products that the two companies are developing will only show lat...

Samsung Galaxy Note is coming to Verizon as the Galaxy Journal?

Samsung Galaxy Note is coming to Verizon as the Galaxy Journal?

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

Arguably, one can say that Verizon managed to do right by forgetting about the Samsung Galaxy S II, seeing that they eventually brought along the Samsung Galaxy Nexus before anyone else. Even though the exclusivity is short lived because Sprint is bound to start selling its own version soon, it simply goes to show how Verizon is willing to go above and beyond its rivals to get the best devices onto its lineup.

Well folks, it seems that we’ll be seeing that same mentality because the rumors point to the possibility of Big Red getting its own version of the ridiculously large smartphone in the Samsung GALAXY Note – yeah, the same one coming to AT&T officially. According to the rumors spewing ...

Verizon to stop allowing legacy Alltel devices to be activated on its network, starting today

Verizon to stop allowing legacy Alltel devices to be activated on its network, starting today

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

It's been three years and two days since Verizon officially closed its acquisition of Alltel, and it looks like Big Red's finally putting the sledgehammer down on activating legacy devices from the purchased network. We just received official word from a Verizon spokesperson that effective today, the carrier will no longer allow you to bring over an Alltel device to a retail outlet and get it activated on their network. If you're currently using an Alltel-branded phone on Verizon, don't panic: this new policy change only applies to handsets that haven't already been activated. We can't imagine this will affect too many users at this point, but we imagine Chad's still feeling a little bummed ...

Verizon extended batteries 50% off for 4G LTE smartphones

Verizon extended batteries 50% off for 4G LTE smartphones

Posted on Jan 13, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Are you unsatisfied with the battery life of your 4G LTE smartphone? Now is your chance to give it a boost. Verizon is chopping 50 percent off batteries for its full range of 4G LTE phones. Once $49.99, each battery is now on sale for just $24.99 — a good price if you consider how ridiculously expensive fifty bucks is for a battery.
Verizon isn’t exactly touting this sale. In fact, it’s doing quite the opposite: staying pretty silent. The deal was originally thought to be just for the Galaxy Nexus. After struggling to find any confirmation that a sale for batteries was actually going on, one DroidLife reader called Verizon Wireless. The representative informed him that all batteries for 4G p...

Verizon says (almost) 'all' future phones and tablets will be LTE

Verizon says (almost) 'all' future phones and tablets will be LTE

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

In case you hadn't noticed, Verizon is going all in on LTE. And that doesn't just mean investing heavily in its network and snatching up spectrum left and right -- it also means making the 4G tech a "hard requirement" for all future devices. Outside of a few exceptions, primarily limited to its push-to-talk offerings, all upcoming phones, tablets and mobile hotspots will boast an LTE radio. Verizon's associate director of device marketing, Keith Lampron, assured CNET that the company isn't going to turn into an iPhone and Android only outlet -- Windows Phone and BlackBerry offerings are welcome to join Big Red, so long as they hop on the 700MHz train.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE coming to Verizon

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

Even before most of the world can purchase Samsung’s first Super AMOLED tablet, the US is getting a version for Verizon’s LTE network. Samsung broke the news themselves in their CES press conference today: the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is getting a localized Verizon LTE model The specifications are the same as the model revealed in 2010, with the obvious addition of mobile broadband.
The most impressive feature of the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is its screen, a brilliant 7.7-inch Samsung Super AMOLED panel. The screen has a resolution of 1280 x 800, matching the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9, though it has a vertical orientation. Verizon launches BlackBerry Curve 9370

Verizon launches BlackBerry Curve 9370

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG1

If all the Windows Phone and Android news isn't really striking your fancy and iPhones hold no appeal then, perhaps, your interest will be piqued by the BlackBerry Curve 9370 which was just announced. Verizon unveiled the latest budget-friendly RIM device for CES and it doesn't depart too much from the QWERTY, candybar mold. In addition to CDMA radios it's also got GSM for globetrotters and NFC for those that want to hop on the next wave of mobile payment tech. Around the back is a 5-megapixel camera, probably not capable of shooting 1080p. The 9370 will run you $99 with a two year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate. And, most importantly, it'll be upgradeable to BlackBerry OS 7.1 -- the mo...

Verizon Wireless goes down in Montana and Wyoming, gets put right back up again

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

We received a handful of tips overnight from readers in higher altitudes indicating problems with their Verizon Wireless devices, problems that seemed more severe than the last round of outages. Indeed there was a problem that knocked out all service, but it was restricted to areas in and around Montana and Wyoming, and it's said to be already fixed. Verizon said a switch failed during regularly scheduled maintenance, putting early bird subscribers offline for a period of about seven hours. All appears nominal again at the moment, so go ahead, give your friends a call and get them out of bed already.

Verizon activated more iPhones than 4G LTE devices last quarter

Verizon activated more iPhones than 4G LTE devices last quarter

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG1

Verizon Wireless CFO Fran Shammo revealed that the carrier activated a record 4.2 million Apple iPhones during the holiday season. The largest carrier in the United States set another record, as the company turned on service for 2.2 million LTE devices in the fourth quarter.
Verizon barely missed its lofty goal of 11 million iPhones sold in 2011 by only a few thousand, ending the year with 10.7 million sold. This was the highest number of activations since the company first rolled out LTE in late 2010. The spike in activations would likely suggest the double data promotion Big Red ran for its LTE devices during the holidays was a major success. With the release of Motorola’s Droid Razr, the ...

Verizon CEO McAdam cancels CES panel appearance

Verizon CEO McAdam cancels CES panel appearance

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

It looks like the CES 2012 Innovation Power Panel will have to go on without Verizon's CEO, Lowell McAdam — the company just announced he will miss CES this year due to some scheduling conflicts. A Verizon spokesperson confirmed this to Reuters, saying that the company was looking in to sending another executive to the panel. We're willing to take Verizon's word at face value, though it is surprising to see him back out of an appearance at the industry's largest show — whatever's on his calendar now must be a big deal.

Verizon Admits To 4G LTE "Growing Pains

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

It hasn't been an awesome month for Verizon customers using an LTE-equipped phone. There have been three outages this month alone.
The most recent instance happened this week, Verizon confirmed, blaming it on an unexpected glitch.
It has been a frustrating month for the carrier's growing base of high-end 4G LTE phones. Not only has the fast-speed network become inexplicably unplugged three times, but the outages also took down 3G connectivity for 4G-equipped devices.

Verizon's announcement that hey, no biggie, but they're going to charge you two dollars a month just for paying your bill online didn't just catch our attention. It's also apparently perked up a few ears at the FCC, where hopefully glorious, government-appointed justice will rain down on our carrier oppressors.

Verizon is having quite a month, as the company’s LTE network has suffered three outages, shutting down access to smartphone and wireless hotspot customers across the country. Verizon went on a PR offensive and said that sometimes being the pioneer leads to growing pains.
In an interview with GigaOm, Verizon’s VP of network engineering Mike Haberman tried to explain the LTE problems that occurred. Basically, he said the issues were with the service delivery core (IP Multimedia Subsystem), which replaces the old signal equipment used in 2G and 3G networks
