CSIRO snatches $220m windfall in WiFi patent dispute with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization keeps bowling 'em over -- in the courtroom, anyway -- with its hardy WiFi patent. The government-funded research group has chalked up another $220 million win after AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Acer, Lenovo and Sony each agreed to establish licenses with the litigious group. CSIRO now holds agreements with 23 companies and has pocketed more than $430 million from its courtroom activities. Australian Senator Chris Evans estimates that 90 percent of the industry is now paying licensing fees for the technology, but with the patent set to expire next year, we'd be mighty paranoid to be among that final ten percent. You'll find ...

Verizon's well-publicised plans to introduce family data plans look to be progressing well, judging by a newly leaked screenshot.
The PhoneArena website has obtained a grab, which shows an online mechanism for families to calculate which data plan would be best suited to their needs.
The page asks questions like how many emails are sent per day, how many websites a family visits and how much time the group spends indulging in online gaming.
As users add information a data meter will fill up on the right hand of the screen. The page is similar to those Verizon uses to help individuals decide on the right plan.

Verizon acquires Cellular One of Northeast Pennsylvania, gains a bit more spectrum

Verizon acquires Cellular One of Northeast Pennsylvania, gains a bit more spectrum

Posted on Mar 16, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Verizon has made headlines with its plans to buy $3.6 billion worth of spectrum — and now the carrier has announced a much smaller acquisition. Cellular One of Northeast Pennsylvania is now under the Verizon umbrella after being purchased from US Cellular, and though financial terms weren't disclosed, the deal includes a spectrum license that covers 114,000 Pennsylvania residents. It may not be a lot, but when you're as spectrum-constrained as Verizon claims to be, every little bit helps. Those subscribers affected by the deal won't see any changes for a few months, but Verizon says it will eventually convert its new purchase to Verizon branding. That may also include changes to calling plan...

FCC scrutinizing Verizon's petition to acquire spectrum

Posted on Mar 12, 2012 by MG1

Bad news for Verizon as the FCC formally announced its disapproval of the company’s potential $3.6 billion acquisition of spectrum from cable companies (Cox, Time Warner, Comcast, and Brighthouse). The feds want the largest cell phone provider in the United Sates to resend its filings because it feels the original filings submitted by Verizon Wireless were full of holes, simply put, the government needs more information about the proposed deal.
The FCC’s message to Verizon yesterday was, ”In order for the Commission to complete its review of the applications and consider the necessary public interest findings…we require that you provide by March 12, 2012, a revised copy of the redacted versi...

Verizon statement on locked bootloaders to the FCC

Verizon statement on locked bootloaders to the FCC

Posted on Mar 01, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Droid-Life has obtained a letter sent by Verizon to the FCC, dealing with complaints about their policy of locking down the bootloaders of their phones – notably Android smartphones, which have a sizable enthusiast following that likes to load custom versions of the OS onto their devices. If you don’t feel the need to hack your phone you probably don’t care one way or another, but past consumer agitation has lead HTC to reverse its policy on bootloader locking, and manufacturers like ASUS and Sony have also provided tools for enthusiasts to use to unlock their phones.
What’s interesting in the letter is they use the quality of customer tech support as the main reason why they insist upon loc...

Verizon rolls out bug fix update for original Motorola Droid X

Verizon rolls out bug fix update for original Motorola Droid X

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

Even though the original Motorola Droid X is nearly two years old, Verizon hasn't forgotten about the owners of this once-mighty smartphone. Verizon has begun rolling out a 15MB over-the-air software update — it's not an Ice Cream Sandwich update, but there are a lot of bug fixes for users who might find their phones to be a little flaky. Most noteworthy is the quashing of a bug that apparently powers your phone on without "user interaction" — an odd issue that appears to be a problem with more than one of Motorola's phones.

T-Mobile asks FCC to block Verizon spectrum buy

T-Mobile asks FCC to block Verizon spectrum buy

Posted on Feb 23, 2012 by MG1

T-Mobile USA has urged the FCC to block the $3.9 billion sale of wireless spectrum by cable companies to Verizon Wireless on Tuesday. Possibly frustrated after its own deal with AT&T was denied, the provider argued the deal between Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, and Cox Communications would give Verizon an "excessive concentration" of wireless spectrum. Verizon is already the biggest cellphone company in the US, while T-Mobile is fourth largest.
Many companies have argued such large deals will make competition in the industry difficult, as it risks letting only the leader afford to offer faster download speeds and more data. MetroPCS, the fifth-biggest cellphone ...

T-Mobile speaks out against Verizon's planned spectrum acquisitions

Posted on Feb 23, 2012 by MG1

T-Mobile has filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission urging the committee to block the proposed acquisition of spectrum holdings from cable companies by Verizon Wireless. T-Mobile contends that the acquisitions would concentrate too much spectrum in Verizon's hands. Verizon announced its intent to purchase $3.6 billion worth of spectrum licenses from Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable Inc., Bright House Networks, and Cox Communications last year.

Verizon's Droid Bionic drops to $99, loses bundled microSD card

Verizon's Droid Bionic drops to $99, loses bundled microSD card

Posted on Feb 17, 2012 by MG1

Last month, Verizon dropped the price on the Droid RAZR while removing the bundled 16GB microSD card and now it's doing the same thing with Motorola's Droid Bionic. The handset will be available for $99.99 on contract (down from $299.99 when we reviewed it in September) and features 16GB of internal storage, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 4.3-inch qHD display. We liked the Droid Bionic, but Verizon subscribers might also want to take a look at the 8GB iPhone 4 and theSamsung Stratosphere (for the hardware keyboard people out there) at the same price point before taking the plunge.
