Sony loaning Android devices to devs for testing

Sony loaning Android devices to devs for testing

Posted on Apr 19, 2012 by MG1

We've given Sony a lot of props recently because of how it has been going about its Ice Cream Sandwich ROM development, by distributing alpha and beta versions of the updates for the community to test and comment on, in order to make them better. Now, Sony is going another step further by loaning Android devices to developers to let them test apps for any compatibility issues.
Sony has started up its Device Loaner Program, which will allow developers up to 30 days to borrow a device in order to test out apps. Developers have their choice of 9 different Xperia smartphones, including the Xperia S, arc S, active, PLAY, arc, X10 Mini Pro, X10a, X8 and LiveView. The service is completely free, u...

PS Vita sales take a beating in Japan

PS Vita sales take a beating in Japan

Posted on Apr 19, 2012 by MG1

Sony can’t be happy with recent sales of its new PS Vita portable console in Japan. Sales the portable gaming device have reached a record low in Japan. Executives at Sony have to be wincing right now with the Vita slipping to fourth place spot in hardware rankings. The Vita only sold 8250 units in Japan for the week.
Sony can at least smile at the fact that the PS Vita sold more units than the Nintendo Wii. The Wii sold and even more abysmal 6,837 units. Granted the Wii is years old now and will be replaced soon and the Vita is virtually brand-new. The top seller in the hardware rankings was the Nintendo 3DS.

Sony Xperia S heading to Canada

Sony Xperia S heading to Canada

Posted on Apr 12, 2012 by MG1

Sony announced that the Xperia S will soon be available at its stores across Canada. Beginning April 17th, fans of the Japanese company will be able to get the unlocked device and use it on Rogers’ network. Unfortunately we don’t know the price and can only speculate how much this powerful smartphone will cost — if I had to guess, I would say it will sell for some $650.
Now that’s all cool to see Sony bringing its new smartphone(s) to Canada, but it seems they failed to reach an agreement with local carriers. Let’s face it – most people buy phones with a contract and in that sense (without a carrier deal) I doubt the Japanese giant will be able to move enough units. Moreover, although the Xp...

PS Vita firmware update 1.67 available now, as well as the handheld's first free-to-play downloadable

Posted on Apr 12, 2012 by MG1

The PlayStation Vita just received its first free-to-play game, a match-three puzzler called Treasures of Montezuma Blitz, and we were curious to see how it plays, but when we fired up a Vita to see just how friendly Sony's made the platform for freemium titles, we ran into a required update. Yes, Sony's updated the PlayStation Vita's firmware to version 1.67, only one week after the last, and just like version 1.66, it's a 97MB download. There's no changelog, so we're not sure what it does quite yet, but we can hazard a guess: perhaps Sony's trying to successfully release version 1.65 yet again. We've reached out to the company for details. In the meanwhile, you can hear more about Montezum...

Sony sees massive $6.4 billion annual net loss, its worst ever

Sony sees massive $6.4 billion annual net loss, its worst ever

Posted on Apr 11, 2012 by MG1

Sony has revised its full-year earnings projections for the fiscal year ended March 31st to include a tax hit that will see the company report a record $6.4 billion loss. The net loss will be twice what the consumer electronics giant projected, and it marks Sony’s fourth consecutive annual loss. ”There have been several reasons for our poor results,” Sony CFO Masaru Kato told reporters at a briefing Tuesday morning. “We are aiming for a rebound and for this we have made management changes.” Kato cites poor demand and a strong yen among the causes for Sony’s poor results. Reports surfaced earlier this week stating that Sony plans to cut as many as 10,000 jobs in the coming years, or roughly 6...

The Japanese Nikkei business daily is reporting that Sony is planning to cut its global workforce by 10,000 workers, or about 6 percent of its entire workforce by as early as the end of 2012. About 5,000 workers will be cut due to the restructuring of Sony's chemical and small and medium LCD businesses, in addition to another 5,000 domestic and international cuts. The move is meant to improve operational efficiency, while accelerating the company's shift toward mobile devices.

LulzSec hacker pleads guilty in Sony Pictures security breach case

LulzSec hacker pleads guilty in Sony Pictures security breach case

Posted on Apr 06, 2012 by MG1

An accused member of Anonymous offshoot LulzSec has pleaded guilty to participating in an extensive hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2011. Reuters has reported that in a deal with prosecutors, Cody Kretsinger pleaded guilty to one count each of conspiracy and unauthorized impairment of a protected computer. We still don't have any information on the deal, but it was apparently enough to get him to reverse an earlier "not guilty" plea.
Kretsinger, allegedly known as "recursion" within LulzSec, was accused last year of obtaining information from Sony and passing it along to other members. Kretsinger was the first alleged member of LulzSec to be apprehended, a list that is now significant...

Sony yanks Vita firmware update after release

Sony yanks Vita firmware update after release

Posted on Apr 06, 2012 by MG1

Sony has cited technical faults after pulling a recently released Playstation Vita update. The new firmware, version 1.65, was announced earlier this week, and Sony pushed it out to Vita devices shortly thereafter. However, anyone attempting to find the update now will be told there are no updates available. It’s odd considering this wasn’t a major update by any means.

PlayStation Vita 1.66 firmware update rolling out now, minor UI tweaks in tow

Posted on Apr 05, 2012 by MG1

Shortly after unleashing (and quickly pulling back) the PS Vita's v1.65 firmware update, Sony's rapidly rolling out a followup release. Version 1.66 brings with it a few UI tweaks, including tidbits such as the addition of a progress bar during app installs, notification alerts now only popping up for three seconds, plus the option to tap Retry / Cancel when running into troubles during location search. Games like Unit 13 and Gravity Daze will also see "functional improvements," while the Near app is getting a direct link to the PlayStation Store, making it easier to grab apps that other folks are toying with. The refresh is up for grabs now, so be sure to hit that System Software on your qu...

In a statement sent to CNET UK, Sony highlighted that it was aware of the issue, but noted that it only affected a small number of Xperia S handsets.

Sony releases (and pulls) PS Vita firmware v1.65

Posted on Apr 04, 2012 by MG3

Sony has announced, released, and withdrawn the next firmware update for the PS Vita in the space of a day. Version 1.65 of the handheld console's software was set to make some minor usability tweaks including the ability to turn notifications on and off, extend the time before the system automatically goes to sleep from five to ten minutes (a welcome addition), and a caps lock function for the onscreen keyboard. Vita owners had a very small window of opportunity in which to acquire these features, though, as Sony soon pulled the update due to "a technical fault" — reportedly an issue with adhoc wireless functionality in PSP games. We'll be sure to let you know once the update goes back up o...

Sony PS3 gets Amazon Instant Video app, streams purchased movies and Prime subscription content

Posted on Apr 04, 2012 by MG3

Sony's mystery addition to the PlayStation 3's streaming video service lineup is a mystery no more: it's Amazon Instant Video, the online retailer's collection of an estimated 120,000 movies and shows, as well as Prime Instant Video, the roughly 17,000 streaming items included free with a $79 Amazon Prime subscription. That includes recent infusions of content from Discovery, Viacom, ABC-Disney, and Fox. Both services are now accessible from a native PS3 app, downloadable from your console's XMB menu, and run similarly to Netflix or Hulu Plus in that regard. You won't be able to purchase content from Amazon using your PlayStation Store digital wallet, though: you'll need to pair your console...
