While they may not be the Sony ultrabooks we're still all itching to see, the company's E Series 14P laptops have reappeared with some Ivy Bridge bones. According to Sony Australia, the previously Intel Core i3 processor has been bulked up to a third-generation 2.1GHz Core i7-3612QM, capable of 3.1GHz with Turbo Boost. That's not the only difference, with the 14-inch display boosted to 1600 x 900 and a new choice between AMD'S Radeon HD 7670M or Intel's HD Graphics 4000 to provide the graphical horse power in the updated hardware. The aluminum-splashed laptops, priced at $1,500 AUD (around $1,608 USD), will still house Sony's Gesture Control functions. This should allow you to navigate aroun...

Sony Freshens Up Vaio Series with New Color and Hardware Options

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: NotebooksSony

Sony today announced a bit of a Spring refresh for its Vaio Z laptop line, which is really more like a post-CES refresh here in the States where Spring doesn't officially kick off for about another two months. Timing and verbiage aside, Sony's tweaked Vaio Z laptops represent a minor refresh that begins with a new color option -- Carbon Fiber Silver -- and continues with an optional 4G LTE mobile broadband upgrade.
The Carbon Silver SKU joins Carbon Black, Carbon Gold, and Premium Carbon Black (matte) as color options. Inside Vaio Z laptops are upgraded Core i5 and i7 processor options and RAID 0 solid state drives (SSDs). Sony's Vaio Z line is still highlighted by Sony's Power Media Dock dr...

Sony displays VAIO tablet prototypes; future Windows 8 hardware?

Sony displays VAIO tablet prototypes; future Windows 8 hardware?

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

If you blinked while watching our Sony live blog, you likely missed Kazuo Hirai teasing of a few prototype VAIO laptop and tablets. Well, luckily, Sony's displaying them behind glass at its booth. To me, the most interesting of the two is the tablet that slides over a detachable keyboard. It's a lot like the Series 7 Slider Samsung showed last year (it never came to market), but the tablet separates from the base and also has a stylus. There's a short video of it behind glass below, but if I had to guess this really seems like a perfect fit for Windows 8. (VAIO is Sony's Windows-only brand, its tablet is part of its mobile group.) That said, I ran into a Sony executive at the booth, who said...

Just a few weeks ago Sony reportedly declined to offer a reason why it didn't want to jump on the ultrabook bandwagon. But speculation pointed to a company concerned over the high cost and low profit margins associated with Intel's new form factor. Sony also previously launched its own Z-series of ultra-portable VAIO laptops sporting high-performance hardware crammed inside an ultra-thin 0.66-inch design.

Sony Vaio Z gets the in-house teardown treatment

Sony Vaio Z gets the in-house teardown treatment

Posted on Aug 25, 2011 by MG15

Another official teardown, another predictable revelation: the new Sony Vaio Z's viscera are thinner, flatter and, er, more compressed than those of its predecessor. But at least this dissection is performed by an actual Vaio engineer who ought to know his stuff. In the video after the break, Shinji Oguchi explains how cooling was improved using a range of tricks, like aerating the laptop's guts via holes in the keyboard. He also splits open the innovative external media dock, which connects via Intel's Light Peak technology and uses a discrete GPU to give the Vaio Z some gaming oomph. Finally, there's a separate, speeded-up video of Shinji putting the whole thing back together again from me...

Sony S1 tablet to get UK pre-orders September 1

An earlier report about Sony shipping its S1 and S2 tablet in Europe has just got more traction thanks to a new leak. Documents have Sony Centre stores in the UK taking pre-orders for the S1 on, appropriately, September 1. Previously, the pre-orders were expected to begin late in August, but the early September date seen by This is my next still allows enough time to ship them later in the month.
The Android 3.0 tablet will sport a 9.4-inch display and focus on bringing content from Sony's Qriocity service. Sony Centre stores will be the top place to sell the tablet, as staffers are said to be getting detailed training on the devices. Despite the leak, prices still aren't confirmed.

Sony releases second teaser video for S1, S2 tablets

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Sony has released the second in its Two will series of five teaser videos for its upcoming Android-powered tablets. The new video comes nearly two weeks after the first, dubbed First Impression. The new video is called Going smoothly and shows off the two tablets communicating autonomously through a native e-mail app.
It's possible that by the time the fifth video is released, the tablets will be ready for release. If the gaps between them remains consistent at nearly two weeks, that would put the release at roughly mid-August.
The tablets are powered by Android 3.0 and the S1 will have a 9.4-inch touchscreen and Tegra 2 processor, while the S2 will have a folding design and two 5.5-inch scr...
