We were waiting for an announcement from Sony today, and here it is, straight from a side event the company is holding at CommunicAsia 2012 - the expo where it usually unveils new stuff.
It's just that this year there is nothing new, since the company announced a barrage of new handsets already in the last month or so, and has gathered all six of them for the world to see for the first time.
These include the global edition of Sony Xperia ion, the rugged Xperia go, the Xperia acro S, the recently announced Xperia miro and tipo, and the Xperia neo L. They will be soon on sale (Sony promises Q3), but what we are really waiting for is the global version of the Xperia GX, or that elusive Mint I ...

Sony Xperia Ion hits AT&T June 24th for $99 on contract

Sony Xperia Ion hits AT&T June 24th for $99 on contract

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

In the tech industry, time (and the fleeting interests of geekdom) waits for no one product. So, it's understandable if you've already forgotten about Sony Mobile's US flagship: a sleekly designed, mid-range contender known as the Xperia Ion. It's been nearly six months since the electronics giant officially unveiled the device at CES and, for brand loyalists still clinging to the edge of their seats, the wait's nearly over. Starting June 24th, AT&T will be offering the LTE handset -- a first for the newly unified wireless outfit stateside -- for $99 with a new two-year agreement (insert applause for Nokia and its precedent setting Lumia 900 here).
So, what do you get for that compelling pri...

Sony outs Xperia Ion HSPA for poor 4G-lacking citizens

Sony outs Xperia Ion HSPA for poor 4G-lacking citizens

Posted on Jun 13, 2012 by MG1

Sony Mobile casually dropped onto its website that in addition to the expected Xperia Ion flagship, it's also releasing an Xperia Ion HSPA. The handset's only readily apparent feature is its reduced modem, and in every other way looks to match its 4G-enabled brother, with a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 12-megapixel camera and Gingerbread. Whilst its designed to consume the same AT&T friendly frequencies, this one's destined for a rest-of-the-world arrival to sate the lust of global Sony fans in countries where they do everything a little slower.

Sony Xperia tipo, Xperia tipo dual are announced with entry-level written all over

Sony Xperia tipo, Xperia tipo dual are announced with entry-level written all over

Posted on Jun 13, 2012 by MG1

The Sony Xperia tipo, which was previously known by its Tapioca codename, is now finally official. What we have on our hands is a low-end Android smartphone suitable for first-time smartphone owners. It comes in a single- or dual-SIM flavor, with the latter called the Sony Xperia tipo dual.
Interested in specs? Well, here they are: the Sony Xperia tipo and its dual-SIM brother have a 3.2-inch HVGA (320x480) display made out of scratch-resistant mineral glass. Inside it runs an 800MHz single-core Qualcomm processor, and on the back we have a 3.2-megapixel camera. Nothing earth-shattering, we know, yet on the bright side, the smartphone would likely be quite competitively priced. What is reall...

Sony Xperia Play 2 rumors squashed, launch looks unlikely

The Sony Xperia Play is one of those handsets we'd label as different – it was the first and still is the only phone with a slide-out dedicated gamepad, which is great for gamers. Recently, we've heard rumors about the phone getting a successor, an Xperia Play 2, but the latest information straight from Sony rebuffs those rumors.

Is This Finally a Toughphone Worth Buying?

Is This Finally a Toughphone Worth Buying?

Posted on May 31, 2012 by MG3

Sony has just announced that it's launching a new toughphone, called the Xperia Advance. Unlike previous examples of hardy handsets, though, this one actually looks normal—and its specs aren't too shabby either.
Most phones designed to take knocks look like something you'd give a child to play with. But the Xperia Advance actually looks... kinda OK. OK enough that you wouldn't cringe every time you took it out of your pocket, at least. And while it's hardly the most advanced smartphone on the market, it's specs aren't disgraceful.

Sony announces Xperia Go and Xperia acro S: waterproof and dual-core (video)

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Cell PhonesSony

If you were underwhelmed by the middling specs of Sony's past toughphones, you might want to take a look at the latest pair to join the 2012 Xperia family. First up, the Xperia go houses a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display with a dual-core 1GHz processor, powering the (unfortunately still) Gingerbread interface. Sony has reiterated that Android 4.0 will find its way to both new devices. The Xperia go also throws in a 5-megapixel camera and the same wet finger tracking seen on the Xperia Active, which will mean the phone can be steered during underwater adventures. You be able to pick from white, black and yellow color options when the phone arrives in Q3 this year.

Sony Xperia Ion hits FCC with AT&T LTE intact

Sony Xperia Ion hits FCC with AT&T LTE intact

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

The wait for the Sony Xperia Ion in the US has been a long one, but that summer release feels considerably closer now that the Android flagship has swung by the FCC. As we'd hope, the Ion is passing through in full AT&T regalia, carrying the 700MHz and 1,700MHz 4G LTE bands it needs to run on Big Blue -- albeit with a legacy Sony Ericsson label. Along with the expected 850MHz and 1,900MHz HSPA 3G frequencies, we're also seeing an odd instance of 1,700MHz 3G that would normally be reserved for T-Mobile. Given that there isn't matching 2,100MHz support, we're more inclined to see the 1,700MHz block as related to AT&T spectrum refarming or other, more practical purposes than as a ghost of attem...
