Amazon on Wednesday announced that it has begun to accept app submissions from developers in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain for distribution in its Appstore for Android later this year. Amazon’s Appstore in the U.S. is home to “tens of thousands of apps and games” and has seen great success in just one year. “We are thrilled at the success our developers have experienced on the Amazon platform in the last year,” said Jim Adkins, Vice President of the Amazon Appstore. “Some developers have seen revenue double since the launch of In-App Purchasing. We’re excited to open the door to even more opportunity by expanding app sales outside the U.S. We see tremendous potential f...

Amazon's Appstore hitting Europe this summer?

Amazon's Appstore hitting Europe this summer?

Posted on Jun 13, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Amazon

The rumor is that Amazon is planning to bring its Appstore to Europe during this summer. At the moment, the online retailer has dedicated web stores in select European countries, including United Kingdom, Germany, France, Austria, Italy and Spain so it’s fair to argue folks living in those markets will be their primary targets for expansion.
What we get from this is that Kindle Fire may also expand internationally, though that’s just a speculation at present. Selling e-books can be complicated due to local publishers’ rights. However, since the sales of Amazon’s tablet have started falling, it would be a great business decision to pursuit opportunities outside of North America to boost the n...

Grab the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for one cent on Amazon Wireless

Grab the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for one cent on Amazon Wireless

Posted on Jun 06, 2012 by MG1

As per usual, Amazon Wireless is throwing up some great deals on smartphones and is offering the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for a mere penny. While the handset may be 6 months old at this point (Ancient in Android phone years), it’s still a great phone and grabbing it for a penny is a steal.
Of course, to get the Galaxy Nexus for a penny, you’re going to need to sign a two-year contract with Verizon. Also, this deal is only for new customers, and existing Verizon customers will still have to pay up $149 to get the handset. While we really like the Galaxy Nexus, if you’re looking to upgrade your phone within the next two months, we’d suggest you wait it out for the Samsung Galaxy S III that should ...

New Jersey shoppers to pay tax on Amazon purchases starting next July

Posted on Jun 01, 2012 by MG3

Amazon will get a yearlong break from having to collect sales tax on its New Jersey orders. A new deal announced yesterday (May 30th) will see the company build two new distribution centers in the state, together worth about $130 million. In the US, an online retailer is required to collect sales tax in states where it has a physical presence, but this deal will let Amazon off the hook until July, 2013. New Jersey will be joining the likes of tax-collecting states Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, Washington, and beginning in July of this year, Texas.

Amazon set to purchase mobile ad company, get in the game

Posted on Jun 01, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Amazon

A couple of weeks after speculation arose that Amazon would sell ad space on the screensaver for the Amazon Kindle Fire's welcome screen for $600,000, the rumor has broadened into a plan for Amazon to create a mobile ad network. To help it get started, Amazon might be looking to purchase Jumptap, a company already in the mobile advertising business. According to sources for AdAge, the online retailer has also looked at purchasing other firms in the same line of business. Additionally, Amazon hired Jamie Wells away from Microsoft where he was in charge of global product marketing for mobile display and apps. His LinkedIn page says he is currently hiring candidates for mobile ad sales and mark...

Nokia Pureview 808 available for pre-order on Amazon UK

The Nokia Pureview 808 is an average smartphone with a plethora of ordinary features except for one: it has a 41MP Carl Zeiss lens. Photography enthusiasts can rejoice because it’s now available for pre-order on Amazon UK.
Now hold on just a second. Is this thing really capable of snapping photos with a 41 megapixel resolution? If you look closely at Nokia’s advertising, it says that the Pureview 808 has astounding 41MP “image quality.” This means that the photos it does take have quality comparable to a 41MP photo, but in a nutshell, no it does not take 41MP photos.

Amazon Instant Video streaming is now live on the Xbox 360

Amazon Instant Video streaming is now live on the Xbox 360

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

If Amazon's video store is going to compete with the other online sources like Hulu and Netflix, getting on as many platforms as possible is key and it made a major expansion today by launching on the Xbox 360. The app launched on the PS3 back in April, and just like that version, this one includes access to Amazon's video on-demand and Prime all-you-can-eat subscription based streaming. Unique to the Xbox 360 app is support for the console's Kinect peripheral and its ability to recognize control by gesture or voice, plus a brand new feature for Amazon -- a queue. The Watchlist (for now only available on the Xbox 360, Kindle Fire and via the web) lets customers preselect programming they're ...

The Amazon Appstore was updated on Monday to include the company’s popular Test Drive feature on Android devices. The retail giant previously allowed users to test apps using desktop browsers prior to purchasing them, but now trials can be tested on devices. “Today we begin the beta rollout of Test Drive on Android phones,” Amazon said. “Now customers can instantly try apps on their phone — where a majority of app purchases take place — without downloading or installing anything.” The Test Drive feature is currently available on more than 5,000 apps and is compatible with select Android handsets, however Amazon promises the feature will be rolled out to “many more” devices in the coming mont...

Amazon Kindle Fire with ads on the horizon

Posted on May 21, 2012 by MG1

Amazon is reportedly meeting with advertisers to pitch the idea of welcome screen ads on its popular Kindle Fire tablet. The retail giant is asking $600,000 for prime placement on the slate, according to a report from AdAge. Amazon currently offers its entire range of Kindle eReaders with advertisements that appear on the devices’ screen savers. Customers who opt to purchase a Kindle with ads enjoy discounts of between $30 and $50 off the purchase price of the devices; if Amazon carries the same model over to its Kindle Fire, the end-user cost of the tablet could drop by as much as 25% to $149. Amazon's Q1 revenue up 35 percent to $13.18 billion: 9 out of 10 bestsellers were digital

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Amazon

Amazon has just released its Q1 earnings statement, and though sales were up 34 percent year-over to $13.18 billion, net income was down 35 percent to $130 million for its first fiscal 2012 quarter — yes, Amazon's margins are historically very low. North America sales alone amounted to $7.43 billion, up 36 percent from Q1 2011. That puts sales on the optimistic side of the company's Q1 prediction during its Q4 2011 earnings report, and profit better than expected — especially since it predicted a possible $200 million loss for this quarter.

Amazon Appstore offers Draw Something for Amazon Kindle Fire

Amazon Appstore offers Draw Something for Amazon Kindle Fire

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

The hottest mobile game around is not Angry Birds and is not even Words With Friends. The most popular game is Draw Something, the Pictionary-esque game that has so much momentum that it was the reason that Zynga paid $180 million (plus $30 million in employee retention bonuses) to buy Draw Something's developer OMGPOP. The problem for Amazon Kindle Fire users was that the game has not been available in the Amazon Appstore. Since we earlier told you that half of all Android tablet sales belong to the low-priced Amazon Kindle Fire, that meant that half of all Android tablet users were missing out on the game that was the number one free app, number one paid app and number one game in 80 count...
