Windows 8's New Ways to Manage Wireless, Bandwidth

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG1

Windows 8 will be a new animal that merges mobile design thinking with that of the traditional PC computing. The clear sign of this is the Metro design that's currently being used in Windows Phone – and to a smaller extent in the latest Xbox 360 dashboard.
The latest Windows 8 innovation shared through the B8 blog is about how the next big Microsoft release will handle wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi and mobile broadband. Specifically, Windows 8 will attempt to make connectivity as easy and as seamless as possible.
While Wi-Fi options are built into current versions of Windows natively, Windows 8 will attempt to integrate mobile broadband functionality into the OS without having to resort to...

Apple’s education event has huge ramifications for the Windows 8 tablet

Posted on Jan 20, 2012 by MG1

I hate to admit it, but I was very impressed by the Apple’s education event today. Following along the event via the Verge.com live blog, it was clear that the guys from Cupertino have created a compelling set of products with iBooks 2, iBooks Author and a revamped iTunes U app that will indeed change the education landscape. Its not that these ideas are new, Apple has just found a way to offer them to the masses in a more user friendly format that millions of users will flock too. Apple, in one fell stroke has just outmaneuvered their rivals by creating a new lucrative and integrated ecosystem in the learning field that neither Microsoft or Google posses a completive alternative. What’s mo...

Microsoft Reveals Next Generation File System in Windows 8 (for Servers)

Microsoft Reveals Next Generation File System in Windows 8 (for Servers)

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

Much of the focus on Windows 8 has been centered on the Metro UI and whether or not it will translate well to non-touch devices, like your typical desktop PC or notebook computer. Dig a little underneath the hood, however, and you'll find a nifty nugget in the form of a next generation file system. It's called ReFS (Resilient File System), a newly engineered file system built on the foundations of NTFS.
It's going to be introduced only as part of Windows Server 8, which is a bit of a bummer for home users, but it's also the same approach Microsoft has taken each time it's introduced a new file system, the company said in a blog post.

Microsoft’s hardware requirements for Windows 8 devices, including tablets and notebooks, have been detailed, including the rebirth of CTRL+ALT+DEL and how NFC touch-points should be highlighted. Outlined in the recently published Win8 device documentation, Microsoft mandates that tablet PCs and convertible PCs should have at least a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 and a digitizer supporting at least five-point multitouch. x86 machines, meanwhile, must resume in two seconds or less.

Expect Windows 8 In October

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

If you're wondering when the next version of Windows will be available, start counting down.
Pocket-lint.com quoted a Microsoft spokesperson during CES when asked about the potential Windows 8 launch window.
"Windows releases come round about every three years and this year will be three years in October since we launched Windows 7. So I think that's a good guideline to consider," the company rep reportedly said.

Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets to struggle for sub-$600 pricing?

Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets to struggle for sub-$600 pricing?

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

Microsoft has a big battle ahead to overcome the overwhelming popularity of the iPad on the tablet computing front, and its Intel-powered slates might be starting at a distinct disadvantage if a DigiTimes report is to be believed. The site indicates that neither Intel nor Microsoft are willing to cut their prices to help manufacturers, the former providing the Clover Trail hardware and the latter the Windows 8 software, which could see these machines starting at $599 and going way up from there. This could send manufacturers looking for lesser-expensive ARM-powered hardware, creating tablets incapable of executing the current gamut of x86 Windows software. Will users pay a premium for app co...

Despite grumbling at CES's scheduling, which apparently doesn't coincide with Microsoft's Cyrcadian rhythms, and announcing its withdrawal from the show for next year, the software giant did, however, demonstrate a pre-beta 8175 build of Windows 8. The build shows that Microsoft is on track to release the public beta in February, and hinted at new features, like the ability to change the Start menu color scheme and other personalization options, such as a transparent Charms bar. On the media side of things, the new video and audio players with the Metro interface that will be in the public beta were showcased. The pre-beta build also includs a new gesture to get Metro apps out of the way, as...

Nvidia's Tegra 3 Windows 8 reference tablet up close

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

We're already pretty familiar with one of the tablets Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang demonstrated on the CES 2012 stage, but the other one appears to be brand-new: the Tegra 3 Windows 8 reference platform, a hefty touchscreen tablet. We're afraid we didn't get to touch, and Nvidia won't tell us what (other than a Tegra 3 SoC) is inside. According to reps, the internals are all up to Microsoft. See what it looks like in the gallery below.

Intel promotes Windows 8 ultrabooks, touchscreen tech at CES

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG1

Intel has previewed the capabilities of Windows 8-based ultrabooks, some of which take advantage of touchscreen technology and voice recognition. The chip maker suggests more than 75 ultrabook designs will arrive on the market this year, as the company's third-generation Core-series processors become available this spring.
Intel vice president Mooly Eden demonstrated a unique ultrabook prototype, known as the Nikiski, that features a transparent touchpad that extends most of the way across the space below the keyboard. The transparent surface enables users to close the notebook and still view content, such as news feeds and calendar entries, on a portion of the display.

We just got through with a hands-on look at Toshiba’s latest ultrabook, this time an unnamed prototype model with a 14 inch screen. The notable thing about it isn’t the hardware (which, we admit, is pretty awesome) but the early version of Windows 8 that’s running on it. Have a peek below and see what Toshiba has in mind for 2012.

AT&T talking up LTE-enabled Windows 8 tablets at Developer Summit

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

If you're looking for maximum exposure for your developer event, might as well host it during the same week at CES. For bonus points, have it in the same city. That's precisely what AT&T has done for its 2012 Developer Summit, and while the majority of the sessions won't tickle the fancy of everyday consumers, there's one slot in particular that's giving us pause. Titled "A Metro Style Hemi," an afternoon session at the event will showcase a Windows 8 tablet, reportedly powered by one of Qualcomm's many chips. There's no details on whether or not a physical unit will be on hand with an active LTE radio, but it's useful to know that Microsoft's already talking with the carrier about hosting s...

Windows 8's new 'Refresh' and 'Reset' options get detailed

Posted on Jan 06, 2012 by MG3

And just like that, your next Windows-based PC becomes more like a phone. We'd heard during our early playtime with Windows 8 that the furniture would be arranged a little differently when it came to resetting and refreshing one's machine, and now we're being given a closer look at what exactly that means. Finalized builds of Win8 will offer a pair of related features; 'Reset your PC' will allow you to remove all personal data, apps, and settings from the PC, and reinstall Windows, while 'Refresh your PC' enables your to keep all personal data, Metro style apps, and important settings from the PC, and reinstall Windows. Report: Acer and Lenovo to Launch Windows 8 Slates in 2012

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

CES Las Vegas is just around the corner, but, similar to years past, we already know some of the hot items that will be on show in Sin City. Last year, we saw numerous dual-core smartphones and more Android tablets than we care to remember. This year, we're expecting to see Ultrabooks, some quad-core phones and tablets and, hopefully, something Windows 8-related. Considering Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is giving the keynote address, we figure some Windows 8 action isn't completely out of the question, but will he talk about any of the rumored Windows 8 tablets?
