Windows 8 security loophole demoed by researcher

Posted on Nov 28, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft’s Windows 8 isn’t due out in full until fall of next year, but security researcher Peter Kleissner has already found a way to exploit the platform. Kleissner created a Windows 8 bootkit that can bypass the User Account Control using just 14KB of exploit code. It’s said to be the first proof-of-concept to find a vulnerability in Windows 8 and he’s posted a demo video of the process.

Windows 8 Upgrade Streamlined to 11 Clicks

Windows 8 Upgrade Streamlined to 11 Clicks

Posted on Nov 23, 2011 by MG1

For those who upgrade between succeeding versions of Microsoft Windows, the upgrade installer can be cumbersome. There are way too many prompts and clicks. Microsoft is working to make the upgrade package of its next major version of Windows, for now referred to as Windows 8, streamlined to as few as 11 clicks. The new installer will be designed to perform most of its tasks without needing user input.
Microsoft will implement a new web-delivery method, where you purchase your Windows 8 license online, and the installer downloads your soft copy to you. It is pre-fed with your 25-character product key. Microsoft's next major Windows release is slated for 2012.

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

Spoiler Alert! A Samsung executive told Bloomberg on Wednesday that the Korean based manufacturer will ship its new Windows 8 tablet sometime in the second half of next year, giving us a clue as to when Windows 8 might be launched. The tablet itself will look familiar as it will be an updated version of the currently available Series 7 device that uses Windows 7. That means you should expect an 11.6 inch touchscreen on the Windows 8 tablet. According to Samsung's PC group head Nam Seong Woo, current Series 7 owners whose tablets are equipped with Windows 7 will get an update to Windows 8 although he didn't say if the update would be offered at a special price or the regular Windows update pr...

Nokia CEO hints at possible Windows 8 tablet

Nokia CEO hints at possible Windows 8 tablet

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

While discussing his intentions to expand Nokia’s presence in the United States, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recently made comments that suggest his company could have a Windows 8 tablet in the pipeline. “There’s a new tablet opportunity coming,” Elop told Bloomberg in a recent interview. “We see the opportunity. Unquestionably, that will change the dynamics [of the market].” Elop described Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system as a “supercharged” version of its Windows Phone operating system, implying a hint of interest in using the OS on a tablet. The two operating systems share a user interface called “Metro UI.” Nokia recently announced its first two Windows Phone devices, the Lumia 710 and ...

Linux Advocates protest 'Designed for Windows 8' secure boot policy

Linux Advocates protest 'Designed for Windows 8' secure boot policy

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

The Linux Foundation, Red Hat, and Canonical have all registered discontent with Microsoft's new mandate that if OEMs want "Designed for Windows 8" certification, Secure Boot must be turned on by default. Microsoft's chosen implementation of the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) helps prevent boot loader attacks but also complicates matters for Linux: computers with the sticker will not be able to Secure Boot into the OS without help from OEMs. Microsoft has addressed these concerns by pointing to the Developer Preview tablet given away at the BUILD conference last month, which included the option to disable Secure Boot. However, using the feature in conjunction with Linux instead...

HP Windows 8 tablets arriving next year, CEO says; webOS future up in the air

HP Windows 8 tablets arriving next year, CEO says; webOS future up in the air

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

During the company’s third-quarter earnings call on Thursday, HP CEO Meg Whitman confirmed that her company will launch tablets powered by Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system next year. “One of my observations is that HP tries to do a lot of things,” Whitman explained. “And I am a big believer in doing a small number of things really, really well — set them up, knock them down, set them up, knock them down.” Whitman’s comments are in-line with recent rumors that suggested that Dell and HP would both launch Windows 8 tablets during the third quarter next year. As for webOS, the mobile operating system HP’s former CEO Léo Apotheker basically killed off: “I think from a webOS perspective tha...

Nokia CEO Sees “Broader Opportunity” With Windows 8, Hints At Tablets

Posted on Oct 28, 2011 by MG1

In a brief interview with This Is My Next, Nokia CEO (and mole for Microsoft, clearly) Stephen Elop hinted strongly at the potential for a Nokia-built Windows 8 tablet. While his statement was, strictly speaking, more of a dodge, it’s clear that this is something they’re at least thinking about.
When asked about its role as a consumer electronics brand, Elop explained:

HP Testing Windows 8 on TouchPads

HP Testing Windows 8 on TouchPads

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

Clayton Morris from FOX News reports that HP is currently doing "proof of concept work" testing the Preview Edition of Windows 8 on TouchPad tablets without webOS installed.
According to unnamed sources within HP, the company is having internal discussions about reviving the defunct webOS-based version after the supposed second fire sale wave takes place on an unspecified date. The company is also considering building an entirely new device instead with Windows 8 in mind.
The TouchPad was a brief glimmer on the market before HP pulled the device not two months after its debut. Yet despite the talk about selling off its PC division and putting webOS on hold, HP firmly stated that it had no pl...

Intel exec: Windows 8 will be on Ultrabooks next year

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG3

Ultrabooks -- Intel's label for thin laptops with an edgy design à la the MacBook Air -- with Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 OS are due to reach market next year, and the OS could help propel demand for the devices, an Intel executive said this week.
More than 60 Ultrabook designs could become available next year and "11 or so designs" will be available by the end of this year, said Tom Kilroy, senior vice president and general manager of worldwide sales at Intel, in an interview following the company's third-quarter earnings call on Tuesday.

Microsoft talks Windows 8 portrait mode, really wants you to be proud of it

Microsoft talks Windows 8 portrait mode, really wants you to be proud of it

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG15

If Apple is that paranoid friend that has four deadbolts on his door and a loaded weapon in every room, then Microsoft is the over-sharer who tweets where, when and what he had for lunch -- including both before and after photos (and we're not talking about pictures of a clean plate). Redmond wants you to know about everything it does -- no accomplishment is too minor for a lengthy explanation of the what and why. Take for example, portrait mode. Windows 8 will have one. We know what you're thinking, "well I would frackin' hope so," but the devs want you to know this isn't just some feature they slapped in the OS knowing people would expect it. The team studied users both familiar with and n...

Free Software Foundation: Windows 8 secure boot requirement could lock out Linux

Free Software Foundation: Windows 8 secure boot requirement could lock out Linux

Posted on Oct 19, 2011 by MG1

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) has launched a campaign claiming that Windows 8-certified PCs might prevent users from booting into Linux. The mandatory "secure boot" facility in the systems' Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) might better be called "restricted boot," the organization claims.
Microsoft cheered Windows users in September when it demonstrated the upcoming Windows 8 operating system booting in eight seconds. Part of the technology behind the fast boots, however, could enable Microsoft and its PC vendor partners to block users from loading Linux on a Windows 8 PC, Matthew Garrett, a mobile Linux developer at Red Hat, wrote in a Sept. 20 blog post.

Dell 'very' in step with Windows 8, disappointed by Android

Dell 'very' in step with Windows 8, disappointed by Android

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Dell's founder Michael Dell used his own Dell World conference as an unusual platform for talking down Android while putting faith in Windows 8. While he pledged loyalty to Microsoft and said the company was "very aligned" with it, he said Google's OS had "not developed to the expectations" Dell had. Steve Felice, president of the consumer division, tried to minimize the company's lack of success, claiming that the Streak tablets, Aero, and Venue phones were shipped in small numbers to "see customer reaction and behavior."

To support his view, the CEO went on to make the paradoxical claim that his company's primary business, hardware, wasn't important. Dell provides enterprise-grade service...
