How Microsoft Reduces Memory Use in Windows 8

How Microsoft Reduces Memory Use in Windows 8

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG3

For the second time in Windows history, a new release of Windows will not increase its memory system requirements, but rather it will remain the same or even go down. Windows 7 required a minimum of 1 GB, the same as Windows Vista, which also asked for 1 GB. Windows 8 is likely to stay at that level or even drop slightly as the OS apparently is much more considerate when acquiring available memory resources.

Windows 8 Will Remember Your Settings Across PCs

Microsoft is heavily pitching Windows 8 to be its most user-centric effort yet. One such feature is the ability to sync settings between different computers, so that users can have a similar and more seamless experience moving from one machine to the next.
This means that a Windows 8 user, if he or she chooses, can share settings and personalization between home and work or school computers, or perhaps even between multiple machines within the same home.

Windows 8 secure boot spurs OS lock fears, Microsoft answers

Windows 8 secure boot spurs OS lock fears, Microsoft answers

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft's Tony Mangefeste in a response to early adopters tried to calm down fears that Windows 8 might be used to shut out Linux or competing operating systems. After Red Hat engineer Matt Garrett worried that the UEFI firmware's secure boot feature could be used to exclude non-official operating systems, Sinofsky stepped in to clarify that it was part of the spec and not Microsoft's policy. The code is also an optional policy that, even when active, could still let someone install another OS without a flag preventing the new OS from running.
PC builders can both set which party has control over the security certificates used to greenlight an OS as well as letting customers load certifica...

The FBI arrested a suspected member of the hacking group LulzSec yesterday for allegedly taking part in an extensive security breach involving Sony Pictures Entertainment. The hacker, 23-year-old Cody Kretsinger, is charged with conspiracy and the unauthorized impairment of a protected computer in connection with the attacks on the film studio in May and June.
The nine-page indictment, unsealed yesterday, accuses Kretsinger and other conspirators of obtaining confidential information from Sony computers using a SQL injection attack against its website. It is common for hackers to use this type of attack to gain access to servers and steal information by exploiting vulnerabilities in its defe...

HTC Windows 8 tablet with Qualcomm chipset in the works

HTC Windows 8 tablet with Qualcomm chipset in the works

Posted on Sep 21, 2011 by MG1

After the rumor yesterday that Intel peeps have been scouring the floors at IDF 2012 holding HTC Android devices, likely smartphones, powered by Intel chips, now Eldar Murtazin spilled the beans that HTC has also started developing a Windows 8 tablet.
In the casual Twitter conversation he says that this is an ARM-based tablet, not an Intel machine, and the chipset inside will be of Qualcomm make. Qualcomm is a minority shareholder in HTC, which explains why the Taiwanese have this tight and warm relationships with the Snapdragon family.
Windows 8 Kal-El ARM-based tablets are rumored to list battery life in days, not hours, as one NVIDIA rep cryptically noted, but the Intel-based gear, which ...

Remember those Samsung Windows 8 tablets Microsoft gave out at BUILD? Well, if you’re really jonesing to get your hands on the next generation of Microsoft’s operating system in a touch-friendly environment, you can get one on eBay but it’s going to be costly.
There are multiple listings for the Samsung Windows 8 tablet and some auctions are reaching over $3,500. Of course, you can download the software right now from Microsoft’s developer website but the hardware itself is pretty nice, even if it comes with a fan: 11.6-inch screen, Intel second-gen i5 processor, 64 GB storage, 4 GB of RAM and all the sensors you’d want.

Windows 8 on ARM won’t run x86 apps Microsoft admits

Windows 8 on ARM won’t run x86 apps Microsoft admits

Posted on Sep 16, 2011 by MG1

Windows 8 ARM PCs will not, in fact, have full app compatibility with software designed for x86 Windows 7 and 8 computers, Microsoft has confirmed, instead demanding that developers port their titles over to the new architecture. Despite earlier suggestions that seemed to indicate otherwise, Windows president Steven Sinofsky clarified during an analyst Q&A this week that while new apps coded for the Metro UI will work on both x86 and ARM tablets, laptops and other computers, existing software will not.

Windows ARM support not an issue for Intel

Windows ARM support not an issue for Intel

Posted on Sep 16, 2011 by MG1

Intel CEO, Paul Otellini, remains bullish about the prospect of Microsoft supporting the ARM architecture in the upcoming release of Windows 8.
Down the coast in Anaheim Microsoft is hosting the Build Conference as Intel runs its IDF2011 conference here in San Francisco. There it was talking up its support for the ARM micro-architecture in the next version of the Windows OS.
Otellini though is unconcerned with the prospect of added competition in the Windows space.
"We've always had to have the best chip to run on Microsoft software," he said.
"When you have the best chip you win."
It's not just the architecture that's important though as there's a vast library of legacy applications out the...

NVIDIA Kal-El tablet support promised for Windows 8 developer program

NVIDIA Kal-El tablet support promised for Windows 8 developer program

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

Soon after the big reveal for Windows 8 at Microsoft’s BUILD conference, system on chip manufacturers NVIDIA stepped up to present their Windows 8 Developer Program, made to help those creating future applications for the Windows 8 platform. Noting that this program will include both tools and resources for “hundreds of millions of ARM and x86-based devices” that will soon be using Windows 8, NVIDIA added that all four of their processor brands will support Windows 8 in full. This includes, you guessed it, NVIDIA’s upcoming quad-core Tegra processor codenamed Project Kal-El. Kal-El, for those of you that do not know, is an ARM-based system on what NVIDIA reminds us is “on a chip that will po...

Windows 8 requires less power than Windows 7

Windows 8 requires less power than Windows 7

Posted on Sep 14, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system will not require a processing powerhouse to run efficiently, the company claimed during the official unveiling.
At the Build developers' conference, Windows President Stephen Sinofsky demonstrated Windows 8 running on his own Lenovo S10 netbook, which is around three years old.
Sinofsky used Windows Task Manager to show that Windows 8 required less system resources than Windows 7 and that the aging Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM set-up was "enough" to run the new OS.
Windows 8 used 280MB of data while Windows 7 used 400MB to run, the implication being that users of older machines won't be forced to upgrade to a new PC if they want to upgrade t...
