ZTE bringing a Windows Phone to USA this year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftZTEWindows Phone 7
ZTE has told AllThingsD it intends to bring a Windows Phone to USA this year. The company already produces the low-end but good looking ZTE Tania, which is being sold carrier-branded by SFR in France.
The company will likely take a similar carrier-branded approach in USA.
“We understand the U.S. market is primarily a market driven by the carriers,” ZTE U.S. CEO Lixin Cheng said in an interview at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show. “Compared with some of our competitors, we are more willing to customize our product.”
Cheng noted that Microsoft is a key partner for his company for its current “Mango” version of Windows Phone, as well as for its upcoming “Tango” low-end effort. ZTE is also ...

Microsoft Reveals Next Generation File System in Windows 8 (for Servers)
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Much of the focus on Windows 8 has been centered on the Metro UI and whether or not it will translate well to non-touch devices, like your typical desktop PC or notebook computer. Dig a little underneath the hood, however, and you'll find a nifty nugget in the form of a next generation file system. It's called ReFS (Resilient File System), a newly engineered file system built on the foundations of NTFS.
It's going to be introduced only as part of Windows Server 8, which is a bit of a bummer for home users, but it's also the same approach Microsoft has taken each time it's introduced a new file system, the company said in a blog post.

Windows 8 hardware specs confirm CTRL+ALT+DEL is reborn
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft’s hardware requirements for Windows 8 devices, including tablets and notebooks, have been detailed, including the rebirth of CTRL+ALT+DEL and how NFC touch-points should be highlighted. Outlined in the recently published Win8 device documentation, Microsoft mandates that tablet PCs and convertible PCs should have at least a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 and a digitizer supporting at least five-point multitouch. x86 machines, meanwhile, must resume in two seconds or less.

Pantech next to sign Android patent deal with Microsoft
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftPantech
Microsoft may have already signed patent licensing agreements with 70 percent of the US Android manufacturers, including some of the biggest names in the market, but that doesn't mean Redmond's about ready to hit the brakes anytime soon. Next up on the block is Pantech, according to a company spokesperson talking with Yonhap News. No specific details have been decided yet, so we'll have to wait for the official word and see what happens.

Expect Windows 8 In October
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
If you're wondering when the next version of Windows will be available, start counting down.
Pocket-lint.com quoted a Microsoft spokesperson during CES when asked about the potential Windows 8 launch window.
"Windows releases come round about every three years and this year will be three years in October since we launched Windows 7. So I think that's a good guideline to consider," the company rep reportedly said.

Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets to struggle for sub-$600 pricing?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsMicrosoftIntelWindows 8
Microsoft has a big battle ahead to overcome the overwhelming popularity of the iPad on the tablet computing front, and its Intel-powered slates might be starting at a distinct disadvantage if a DigiTimes report is to be believed. The site indicates that neither Intel nor Microsoft are willing to cut their prices to help manufacturers, the former providing the Clover Trail hardware and the latter the Windows 8 software, which could see these machines starting at $599 and going way up from there. This could send manufacturers looking for lesser-expensive ARM-powered hardware, creating tablets incapable of executing the current gamut of x86 Windows software. Will users pay a premium for app co...

Skype for Windows Phone 7 nears release
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7Windows Phone 7.5
Ever since Skype was taken over by Microsoft back in October 2011, a Skype app for its Windows Phone 7 operating system has been on the cards. And now it looks as though it's nearly here after vice president of Skype division, Rick Osterloh, said: "we're working on a Windows Phone product that will be coming out soon," during an interview at CES 2012. The news that Skype will be heading to Windows Phone 7 has been hanging around for some time now as it was initially thought that Microsoft would be launching the Skype app a little earlier, possibly by the end of 2011. However it was not to be, so this "coming soon" CES 2012 quote is very timely. In actual fact, the term "coming soon" could me...

Xbox took 40 per cent of US gaming pot in 2011
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360
NPD's latest games data has underlined just how dominant the Xbox is in the US, with Microsoft's console capturing 40 per cent all consumer spending from physical sales in 2011.
Although the figures do not include the increasingly prominent digital sales or downloadable content, people buying physical discs remains dominant, and it is clear that Microsoft's dominance is not on the wane.

OnLive Desktop turns your iPad into a cloud-based Windows 7 PC, and its free

It was just recently when told you that OnLive is shifting its efforts from cloud gaming to cloud computing. However, the results from the company's work are already here. Introducing OnLive Desktop for the iPad – a cloud-based PC desktop environment that brings Windows 7 functionality to your iPad.
In a nutshell, it works just like OnLive's cloud gaming solutions. All of the processing happens on its servers while the user is given audio and video feedback, as well as control over the input, of course. Technically, it should feel like using a Windows 7 PC with productivity applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and will even let you store 2 gigs of data in your personal cloud.

LG and Microsoft sign patent agreement over Android and Chrome OS
Like UnlikeFiled in: LGMicrosoftGoogle
Microsoft and LG have signed a patent agreement that covers LG’s tablets, mobile phones, and other consumer devices running Android or Chrome OS. Terms of the deal between the two companies have not being disclosed. However, this isn’t the first time Microsoft has targeted an Android vendor, previously signing deals with Samsung, HTC, and Acer, among others. “Together with our 10 previous agreements with Android and Chrome OS device manufacturers, including HTC, Samsung and Acer, this agreement with LG means that more than 70 percent of all Android smartphones sold in the U.S. are now receiving coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio,” said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and...

Will Zune be renamed to Microsoft Music, completely abandoned, or what?

It’s been rumored for a long time now that the Zune brand would eventually be killed off, considering the commercial failure of the Zune music players. But alas, Zune has lived on as the music service integrated into Windows Phone and Xbox, and the Zune desktop software is used to synchronize Windows Phones with PCs, suggesting that Microsoft was looking to retain Zune as a brand similar to Apple’s iTunes.
In all Windows 8 demos and previews to date, however, the Zune branding was notably absent, and Neowin is now claiming that they’ve seen a possible replacement for it, on Windows 8 devices shown at CES, that’s called Microsoft Music.

Nokia's Lumia 710, its first Windows Phone for the US, is on sale now

It's been a long time coming, but you can finally buy a Nokia Windows Phone in the US. T-Mobile launched the Lumia 710 today in black and white for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and with the requisite 2-year contract. We still think it's a fair price, despite the few qualms we had with the device when we reviewed it, but the forthcoming Lumia 900 puts a damper on our enthusiasm for this device a bit. However, it's not for us; it's for first-time smartphone buyers, and still seems like a solid choice for that market. Despite the Lumia 710's status as an entry-level device, it's exciting to see Nokia have a major US release for the first time in months.

Windows Phone users download more apps than the Android folks, less than the iOS junkies
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7Windows Phone 7.5
Microsoft, and the head of developer relations for Windows Phone in particular, Brandon Watson, released a fluff infographic today to explain how the app ecosystem performed in 2011. The Marketplace app store reached 50 000 applications recently, and the infographic shows what type and number of apps people are downloading. Turns out that the average Windows Phone user got 48 apps from there in 2011, compared to 30 for Android and 83 for iOS. This might have to do with the number of apps - although 50 000 sounds more than you'll need in a lifetime, iOS is ten times that, so people get enticed easily when a new quality app comes across. Another interesting part is that all in all 13 000 of t...

Microsoft demoes Windows 8 pre-beta at CES: more customization options and new media players in tow

Despite grumbling at CES's scheduling, which apparently doesn't coincide with Microsoft's Cyrcadian rhythms, and announcing its withdrawal from the show for next year, the software giant did, however, demonstrate a pre-beta 8175 build of Windows 8. The build shows that Microsoft is on track to release the public beta in February, and hinted at new features, like the ability to change the Start menu color scheme and other personalization options, such as a transparent Charms bar. On the media side of things, the new video and audio players with the Metro interface that will be in the public beta were showcased. The pre-beta build also includs a new gesture to get Metro apps out of the way, as...
