Xbox 720 will not launch this year, Microsoft exec says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX One
Microsoft will reportedly not launch the highly anticipated follow-up to the Xbox 360 this year. Cedrick Delma, Microsoft’s marketing director in France, recently told Le Point that he was “certain” the Redmond-based company would not release a new Xbox this year. Gamers shouldn’t give up all hope on at least getting a glimpse at Microsoft’s next-generation console this year, though. BGR exclusively reported last June that Microsoft has plans to unveil its Xbox 360 successor during this year’s E3 gaming show in Los Angeles. A few Microsoft patents recently suggested that the “Xbox 720″ might double as a set-top box complete with DVR functionality, and a rumor last week also suggested that th...

Windows Phone Tango may add support for up to 120 languages
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7.5
Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) currently offers support for 35 different languages, however Microsoft may be planning to add an additional 85 languages in the next Windows Phone Tango update. The new version of Windows Phone, codenamed Tango, is expected to better cater to emerging markets, which will help Microsoft and its Windows Phone partners expand the platform globally. WPSauce, the source of the rumor, said that Microsoft announced the added language support during an event in India where the company also noted that future Windows Phone updates will support C++. It remains unclear when the Redmond-based company plans to release Windows Phone Tango.

Asus working on prototype Kinect-equipped Windows 8 laptops?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftASUSWindows 8
We know Microsoft will launch Kinect for Windows hardware next month, but a new report claims that the software giant could be working with Asus to build that support directly into laptops. The Daily says it has "checked out" a pair of official prototype Asus laptops that include a Kinect sensor built-in. The sensor, running on a Windows 8 laptop, reportedly stretches across the top of the screen, and includes a set of LEDs at the bottom of the display.
Asus released its own WAVI Xtion hardware last year, based on the same PrimeSense technology used in Kinect, so it's clear the company has experience with motion-controlled devices. Microsoft has not officially detailed its support for Kinect...

Kelihos botnet suspect 'surprised and shocked' at Microsoft accusations | The Verge
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft named former antivirus worker Andrey Sabelnikov as a suspect in its Kelihos botnet case earlier this week, leaving him surprised at the decision. Sabelnikov, a 31-year-old Russian, insisted in a blog post today that he is "absolutely not guilty," and plans to prove his innocence in court after being "surprised and shocked" at the accusation. Microsoft presented evidence on Monday, in an amended complaint with a US District Court, that Sabelnikov "wrote the code for and either created, or participated in creating, the Kelihos malware."

Bill Gates sent final, heartfelt letter to Steve Jobs
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftApple
Bill Gates revealed the details of an intimate letter this week that he sent to Steve Jobs shortly before the Apple co-founder passed away in October. In an interview with The Telegraph, Gates says he learned of Jobs' medical condition and wrote him a letter, one that Jobs later kept by his bed. "I told Steve about how he should feel great about what he had done and the company he had built," said Gates, discussing Jobs' children in the letter too. He also dismissed Jobs' critical comments about him in the recent Steve Jobs biography:

Windows Phone only getting IPv6 support with Apollo
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
According to a leaked recent Nokia presentation Windows Phone users will have to wait till Apollo before they can connect to IPv6-only networks.
In the middle of last year it had been believed Windows Phone 7 Mango will support IPv6 due some entries on Microsoft’s Mango .net documentation, but in practice on IPv6-only networks Windows Phones are not able to get IP addresses.
As can be seen from the graphic above while IPv6 support is very variable, Windows Phone has the poorest support amongst the major and not so major operating systems.

Windows 8 to step back on customization in Apple-like choice
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
A seemingly minor decision for Windows 8 in the post-developer preview versions has shown an about-face by Microsoft in its approach to design. During new demos on Thursday to TechRadar, Windows 8 communications lead Chris Flores explained that users wouldn't be allowed to change the background of the main Metro screen to their own photo. Scaling was an issue, but Microsoft had also decided that the home screen tiles would cover it up too much, defeating the point of a custom image.
In its place, Microsoft is offering a mix of basic styles with color themes, each of which has a coordinating set of hues for the trim. The login screen will still allow a custom photo, much like Windows Phone.

Microsoft paid Nokia $250 million to use Windows Phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftNOKIA
Nokia just posted its hugely anticipated Holiday quarter results and summed up its financials for 2011. Not surprisingly, the company posted a huge loss of nearly $1.4 billion (1.07 billion euro), but what’s even more interesting - Nokia is getting paid by Microsoft to make Windows Phones.
Nokia received a $250 million “platform support payment” from Microsoft, just because it is making Windows Phone devices. Nokia also notes that this is the first from a series of payments from Redmond, but it seems that Microsoft has to up that sum to make up for Nokia’s huge loss.

Microsoft to pay AT&T reps $200 million in the U.S. to recommend Windows Phone models
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftAT&T
If you can't beat 'em, pay someone off to beat 'em. That seems to be what Microsoft has in mind in order to raise Windows Phone sales in the U.S. The plan is to pay AT&T staff $10 to $15 for each Windows Phone handset sold as a direct result of a recommendation to a customer. Obviously, Microsoft believes that its mobile OS cannot compete on its merits alone at this stage in the game.
Looking at a chart of global OS marketshare, you can see that Android has been in a major uptrend through the third quarter of last year. Symbian's trend resembles RIM's stock price and iOS has been steady. The graph, based on data from Gartner, shows that Windows Phone had only 2.7% of the market by the end o...

Microsoft patents method for secure pairing of devices wirelessly and a 3D rangefinder camera
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
IBM may be the king of patents, and Apple's patent applications grace these pages rather frequently, but Microsoft's not one to rest on its IP laurels, either. A couple of newly published patents out of Redmond have made their way to the web: one for securely pairing wireless devices and one for 3D rangefinder camera technology. The pairing tech works via a direct connection between devices using Bluetooth or WiFi and an automated, two-step authentication process. First, a request is sent by an initiating handset and is authenticated by its target using an address book of recognized devices. Next, the two devices exchange encrypted security keys to cement their digital friendship, leaving yo...

Google finally allows WP7 users to sync multiple calendars, Microsoft releases guide to switch from Gmail to Hotmail in 3 easy steps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleWindows Phone 7
Google has finally enabled Windows Phone 7 users to sync their phone with multiple Google calendars. Up till now WP7 users had to spoof the process by using an iOS device to select the calendars at m.google.com/sync since the feature had always been available on that platform.
Of course this does not mean Google are now Windows Phone fans – their instructions are still for Windows Mobile, a very deprecated platform now.
Microsoft has not made any pretence of being fans of Google, and have taken advantage of the recent brouhaha surrounding Google’s new permission to spy privacy policy to publish a short 3 step guide to moving your Gmail account to Windows Phone 7.

Windows 8's New Ways to Manage Wireless, Bandwidth
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Windows 8 will be a new animal that merges mobile design thinking with that of the traditional PC computing. The clear sign of this is the Metro design that's currently being used in Windows Phone – and to a smaller extent in the latest Xbox 360 dashboard.
The latest Windows 8 innovation shared through the B8 blog is about how the next big Microsoft release will handle wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi and mobile broadband. Specifically, Windows 8 will attempt to make connectivity as easy and as seamless as possible.
While Wi-Fi options are built into current versions of Windows natively, Windows 8 will attempt to integrate mobile broadband functionality into the OS without having to resort to...

Xbox 720 may be six times more powerful than the Xbox 360
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360XBOX One
The Xbox 720, which BGR exclusively reported will likely be unveiled during E3 this summer, could be six times more powerful than the current generation Xbox 360. IGN broke the news earlier this week and said that the production of the Xbox 720′s graphics processing unit (GPU) is scheduled to begin by the end of this year. IGN said the GPU will be based on ATI’s Radeon HD 6670 GPU and should offer support for 3D technology, 1080p HD output, multiple displays and DirectX 11. Microsoft has also filed a patent that suggests the console will also offer DVR support, which has raised questions of whether or not the company will release two versions of the console, one with DVR support and one with...
