Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

If you're looking for maximum exposure for your developer event, might as well host it during the same week at CES. For bonus points, have it in the same city. That's precisely what AT&T has done for its 2012 Developer Summit, and while the majority of the sessions won't tickle the fancy of everyday consumers, there's one slot in particular that's giving us pause. Titled "A Metro Style Hemi," an afternoon session at the event will showcase a Windows 8 tablet, reportedly powered by one of Qualcomm's many chips. There's no details on whether or not a physical unit will be on hand with an active LTE radio, but it's useful to know that Microsoft's already talking with the carrier about hosting s...

Sony PS4 and Xbox 720 to star in shock E3 2012 unveiling?

Posted on Jan 06, 2012 by MG3

E3 2012 is shaping up to be a show to remember, as a new source claims that both both the Xbox 720 and Sony PS4 are due to be unveiled.
The show, which will take place in June, is expected to mark the full launch of the Wii U following its first airing at last year’s show. As such, the pressure is on Microsoft and Sony to provide something in the way of competition other than peddling their now ageing wares.
“You have my personal word on this – the source is exemplary, 100% concrete, ultra high level,” says MCV Editor Ben Parfitt when explaining that both Sony and Microsoft will definitely be bringing new hardware to the table.

Everyone who lives in an urban concrete jungle knows that there are some parts of town you simply avoid walking through at all costs. Whether said area is filled with homeless people, drug users, or is a hotbed for criminal activity, every city, regardless of how nice it is, has some issues. Microsoft’s just been issued a patent for navigating you around those troubled areas should you happen to be traveling by foot. According to GeekWire the patent also covers learning from the routes you typically take and can set a kind of “safety level” so that your smartphone can give you walking directions through alleys filled with cocaine dealers if you’re into that kind of thing. The technology behi...

Report: Acer and Lenovo to Launch Windows 8 Slates in 2012

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

CES Las Vegas is just around the corner, but, similar to years past, we already know some of the hot items that will be on show in Sin City. Last year, we saw numerous dual-core smartphones and more Android tablets than we care to remember. This year, we're expecting to see Ultrabooks, some quad-core phones and tablets and, hopefully, something Windows 8-related. Considering Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is giving the keynote address, we figure some Windows 8 action isn't completely out of the question, but will he talk about any of the rumored Windows 8 tablets?

Microsoft confirmed Tuesday that Internet Explorer 6′s share of the United States Web browser marker is now less than 1%. In celebration of the stat, first reported by Net Applications, the Redmond-based company is giving a final farewell to the browser. Internet Explorer 6 was first launched in 2001, shortly after Windows XP made its debut. It has since been replaced by new revisions, the most current of which is Internet Explorer 9. “IE6 has been the punch line of browser jokes for a while, and we’ve been as eager as anyone to see it go away,” Microsoft’s director of Internet Explorer marketing Roger Capriotti said in a blog post. “In fact, we launched the IE6 Countdown site last March to ...

Amazon, Microsoft, and Nokia were all interested in buying RIM

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Canadian smartphone maker Research in Motion is in deep trouble. They haven’t had a hit device in their product portfolio since disco was at the top of the charts. The PlayBook, RIM’s response to the iPad, was such an abysmal failure that the company lost almost half a billion dollars to get it off the market. RIM’s next generation operating system, dubbed BBX, had to be renamed to BlackBerry 10 after the company that owns the BBX trademark filed a complaint. And to make matters even worse, RIM recently announced that they’re not going to ship any smartphones running BlackBerry 10 until the end of 2012. Yet despite all that RIM is an acquisition target. According to Reuters, Amazon hired an ...
