RIM's BlackBerry Curve 9360 outed -- is this Apollo?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryCurve 9360
Did RIM forget this budget entry update, or was it pushed aside for this morning's announcements of its higher-end BlackBerry brothers? No matter the case, OneMobileRing got a hands-on with the Curve 9360, and it looks like this portrait QWERTY could be following in its brethren's OS 7 footsteps. Shots of the device reveal a Tour-like chrome trim, optical trackpad and the requisite micro-USB port for your charging / connectivity needs. A pic of the device's open battery door also shows off a SIM card slot, leading us to believe that this may very well be the ever-elusive Apollo. Could we see this mid-end, GSM workhorse in T-Mobile's near future? Our in-house Ms. Cleo predicts a yes.

Malware on the rise for mobile devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
According to a new report by mobile security firm Lookout, malware for mobile devices is more prevalent than ever before, and users are much more likely to encounter it than in the past. One usually thinks of Android when they hear about mobile malware, but those using iOS devices can be just as vulnerable if they do not regularly install Apple's software updates, which studies suggest many do not.
Lookout's report, which aggregated data from 700,000 apps and 10 million devices that are on its Mobile Threat Network, found that malware is increasing in both web-based and app-based situations. The data shows that Android users are 2.5 times more likely to encounter malware now than they were j...

Gingerbread update for the T-Mobile myTouch 4G & G2 is arriving starting on August 6th
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsT-MobileGoogleG2myTouch 4GAndroid 2.3
Once seen as the heavy handed power punch combo for Big Magenta, both the T-Mobile G2 and myTouch 4G are getting just a little bit of spark back into their lives thanks to their upcoming Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates.
For a while now, we’ve been hearing lots of information about it, but we’ve actually started to hear news about their roll out of late – albeit, some are still eagerly awaiting for its arrival. Well, for those who seemingly are unable to get the highly anticipated update to Gingerbread, customers can head into their local T-Mobile store starting on August 6th to get it. However, it’s worth noting that handset owners located in the midwest and west regions will need to wait un...

HTC to launch as many as eight new smartphones in Q3
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC
HTC chief executive Peter Chou on Tuesday said that the Taiwan-based smartphone vendor is scheduled to launch between six and eight new smartphone models this quarter. HTC continues to report record quarter after record quarter, and the onslaught of new handsets it is preparing for the fall season will give the vendor a great shot to top the record 12.1 million smartphones it shipped in the second quarter. The popular smartphone maker currently expects to ship 13.5 million handsets in the September quarter, its CEO says. Chou also stated that all of the devices HTC launches in the third quarter will be middle or high-end models, which will likely help the average selling price of HTC phones ...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaVerizon WirelessDROID BIONIC Etna
A person who claims to be a Verizon employee has leaked a roadmap for the carrier. The information covers 9 devices from September to January and let's start with the smartphone on the tip of every Verizon customer's tongue-the Motorola DROID Bionic. Thanks to comments from Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha, we have been looking for a September launch of the much anticipated phone, and according to the roadmap it will be September 8th when the beast is let loose. We reported yesterday on the specs of the device straight from Motorola, so now all that is left to surprise us with is the price.
On the same date, the roadmap tells us to expect the Samsung Stratosphere. This phone is expected to r...

HTC clarifies how the unlocking bootloader procedure will work
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC
It’s funny, HTC makes some of the best Android devices on the market, from a specification and build quality perspective, but then they molest Google’s mobile operating system with their Sense overlay because they somehow think that as a hardware maker they understand software better than Google engineers. They then reach out to the community and ask them what they want in future HTC devices, and the community unanimously agrees that they need an unlocked bootloader, which in layman’s terms is the capability to install a different version of Android on your phone because you can’t stand the default configuration. HTC agrees to the demands and portray themselves as heros for listening to thei...

Verizon retiring the Samsung Fascinate
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungVerizon WirelessFascinate
The Samsung Fascinate has apparently reached End of Life with Verizon, as it has a telling stamp "Retired" on the listing, and has disappeared from the online store.
Verizon's Samsung Galaxy S version that was the Fascinate was one of the best Android handsets you can get on Big Red at the time it hit shelves last year. It had a good run, if we don't count some bugs and the belated Froyo update, plus it is expected to receive Gingerbread as well, but now it has to move over and hail a new king.
Hopefully this Samsung Fascinate retirement only means that the Samsung Galaxy S II version for Verizon is nearing its announcement and launch. We've heard rumors about the handset being called bot...

U.S. broadband actually approaches advertised speeds
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNetworking Devices
4G is a hot topic here on BGR and as such, we’ve likely become more numb than we should when it comes to advertised data speeds. We’re so used to seeing “theoretical limits” that are so far from reality we just chuckle and move along. The wireline broadband industry, however, is a different beast. According to a study recently conducted by the Federal Communications Commission, major broadband Internet service provides in the U.S. deliver data speeds that are generally between 80% and 90% of the speeds they advertise. The Associated Press reports that the FCC’s study measured data speeds delivered to thousands of U.S. broadband subscribers this past March from 13 of the nation’s top ISPs inc...

Huawei Vision unveiled: stylish 3.7" Gingerbread smartphone in unibody frame
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHuaweiVision
The Huawei Vision might not have the guts to compete with dual-core equipped powerhouses ruling the market, but with a 3.7” and 1GHz chip powering Gingerbread it definitely has what it takes to sell 1 million. And that's the exact sales target of the Shenzhen network equipment and phone maker Huawei.
The Vision is among the company's first attempts to go head-to-head with the big names in the industry, but it also kickstarts a series of smartphones for the company that are expected to be better linked to the cloud. Huawei's upcoming Cloud+ platform is expected to come with functionality similar to what services like iCloud aim to offer: remote access to media and applications. That certainl...

Tiny Glass Lens Can Be Used in Smartphone Projectors
Like UnlikeFiled in: ProjectorsCell Phones
Technology still amazes me even though I’m immersed in it every day. It’s stuff like extraordinarily tiny glass lenses that can turn mobile phones into projectors that make me saw, “Sweeeet.” And just looking at the image above, I’m confident that you readers will think the same.
Look at it, it’s small like a granule of sugar, yet it could be embedded into phones to turn them into useful work or play tools. Here are the details on that little speck of glass, as reported by Wired:
At 1mm x 1mm x .8mm, the teensy FLGS3 Series lens is barely the size of the tip of mechanical pencil lead; and actually, it’s the smallest in the industry. Aspherical glass lenses like this are typically used in opt...

RIM gets touchy: BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860 announced

At its press event in London today, RIM outed all the details about its biggest global launch ever, to 225 carriers, of a fresh handsets crop with the brand spanking new BlackBerry 7 OS.
The new announcements included RIM's hyped all-touchscreen phone BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860, and the BlackBerry Torch 8910, a successor to the original Torch, which will be exclusive to AT&T in August.
The more interesting handset, however, is undoubtedly the BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860. Under the 9850 number it will appear with CDMA radio with Sprint and U.S. Cellular, while the GSM version 9860 will land on AT&T, Rogers, Tellus and Bell in North America, with HSPA+ radio inside. RIM touts the ergonomics of...

Nokia N8 is used to shoot at the world's biggest stop-motion animation set
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN8
The Nokia N8 is still the reigning king in smartphone cameras with its 12-megapixel Carl Zeiss lens. But is it fit enough to shoot at the world's largest stop-motion animation set spreading on over 11,000 square feet? The answer is yes, but it took not one, but three Nokia N8s to produce this breath-taking minute and a half production called Gulp. The marine-themed stop-motion film Gulp narrates the story of a fisherman going out in the sea only to meet adventure and get eaten by a huge fish, but we won't spoil the whole thing.
Interestingly, when shooting the film the three Nokia N8s were used only for capturing stills, not video. The numerous images were then stitched together giving the ...
