AT&T to launch BlackBerry Torch 9810 this month, Torch 9860 and Bold 9900 later this year

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Research in Motion has had better days -- and years, for that matter -- but it's always had a loyal partner in AT&T, a company that's cranked out BlackBerry products faithfully for the past twelve years. The tradition continues, as the GSM giant has announced its intentions to bring the 4G BlackBerry Torch 9810 (aka the Torch 2) to stores sometime this month, followed by the 4G BlackBerry Torch 9860 and 4G Bold 9900 "later this year." No specific dates or prices were given on any of the devices.
The Torch 9810 comes with a 1.2GHz CPU, 3.2-inch touch display, a total of 8GB internal memory (with microSD expansion up to 32GB), and a 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video capture. Oh, and about ...

Smartphones and tablets now responsible for 30% of Gameloft's sales

No one could have predicted that the most popular genre of software for smartphones would have been games. When Applelaunched the iPhone the App Store didn’t even exist, yet now it’s responsible for a sizable chunk of revenue for developers such as Gameloft. During the first half of 2010, the French gaming company scored 76.8 million EUR ($109.2 million) in terms of revenue; 30% of that (23 million EUR; $32.7 million) was from “smart devices”, in other words phones and tablets. This is inline with what the CEO of Electronic Arts, John Riccitiello, said a few days ago in an interview with Industry Gamers. He claims that dedicated gaming consoles make up just 40% of the gaming industry now, co...

RIM's BlackBerry Torch 9810 emerges on AT&T's website, touts '4G' capabilities

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Well, hello beautiful! Can't say we were expecting to see RIM launch a new BlackBerry this evening, but we're sure there's quite a few of you out there that'll take it. The same BlackBerry Torch 2 that we previewed back in June has made the trek over to Ma Bell's network, with a 'Coming Soon' page emerging just moments ago. AT&T claims that this is the world's first 4G BlackBerry on its airwaves, but of course, that asterisk upside the "4G" logo couldn't possibly be more telling. Regardless, the full-featured slider will arrive with BlackBerry 7 OS, a full QWERTY keyboard, sliding display, 1.2GHz processor, 8GB of onboard memory, room for 32GB of expandable storage, 720p video capture, inbui...

Best Buy dishing out free Nexus S for one day only, ball and chain included

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Have you been looking to get your hands on a nice slice of Gingerbread without totally wrecking your wallet? If so... your time has come. Best Buy has announced that starting tonight (August 2nd) at 11 p.m. CST -- we'll assume they meant CDT, aka midnight Eastern -- it will begin offering the Google Nexus S for free (you read that right). Of course, you'll still have to chain yourself to a two-year agreement with AT&T, Sprint, or T-Mobile to cash in on this deal, but wait a day later and the price will certainly jump back up to a full Benjamin. So set your clock, and make sure you score one either in-store or online before 11:59 p.m. CST tomorrow. Check out the full details in the PR, just p...

Motorola DROID Bionic specs confirmed by Motorola

Motorola DROID Bionic specs confirmed by Motorola

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

On Motorola's MotoDev site is a chart listing specs of three of the manufacturer's smartphones. On the left is the recently launched Motorola DROID 3 while on the right is the just released Motorola PHOTON 4G. And in the middle is the handset that Big Red customers have been waiting to see since the CES in January, the Motorola DROID Bionic.
Forget that the model number listed for the handset is for the old model, that would appear to be a legitimate mistake. The official specs for the DROID Bionic include a 1GHz TI OMAP4430 dual-core processor (making the handset eligible to receive Netflix HD), 1GB of RAM (vs. 512MB for the DROID 3), a 4.3 inch qHD display and an 8MP rear camera that captu...

T-Mobile expands carrier billing options for customers

T-Mobile expands carrier billing options for customers

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

T-Mobile is taking some extra steps in the direct carrier billing department by allowing customers to purchase content and services and have said services charged to their monthly bill.
“In 2009, T-Mobile was the first U.S. carrier to offer direct carrier billing for the Android Market. With this new program, we’re extending the hassle-free payment experience to browser-based purchases from virtually any online source and across a variety of mobile devices, delivering more purchasing power to mobile-centric consumers.”
While the option to have something added to your monthly bill sounds like a great idea, it would most likely just fuel needless purchases on the customers part, just because t...

Are Sprint's employees getting the lowdown on the Samsung Conquer 4G?

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

There's a long-anticipated Samsung handset with 4G which has Sprint employees hitting the training manuals. Nope, not that one. It's the Conquer 4G, a midrange Android phone that's finally receiving attention after weeks of obscurity. AndroidCentral uncovered an image of a PowerPoint training presentation that offers only a few new specs: we already knew about the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Gingerbread, 3.5-inch display, and dual cameras with LED flash, but the slide seemingly confirms it'll also have Sprint Mobile Wallet, Swype, and Sprint ID included. Again, we don't have much to go off of here, but the slide -- if genuine -- is a solid clue that we may be seeing the shy guy again...

Nokia 500 'Fate' destined for Q3, 1GHz processor and Symbian Anna onboard

Nokia 500 'Fate' destined for Q3, 1GHz processor and Symbian Anna onboard

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

If you're a loyalist that hasn't given up hope on Symbian yet, behold the latest attempt to keep the OS alive and kicking. The Nokia 500 is the first handset to usher in Espoo's new numbering system and has a bit of firepower behind it: a 1GHz ARM11 CPU, 256MB RAM, and Anna are running the show on a 3.2-inch, 640 x 360 "nHD" display. It'll also sport a five megapixel camera and offer HSPA speeds of 14.4Mbps down / 5.8 Mbps up using a pentaband 3G radio. Respectable components for a device billed to be a "low-cost, full-function smartphone." Still intrigued? The black version will ship out sometime in Q3, with its white counterpart to follow in Q4. If you need to have more choices to select f...

Motorola Photon 4G ready for order on Sprint's site

Motorola Photon 4G ready for order on Sprint's site

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Between the quarterly earnings and the LightSquared agreement, it's been an roller coaster day for Sprint and high noon is still nigh. Adding to the craziness, the Motorola Photon 4G -- officially in stores on July 31st -- is now available for order on Sprint's online store. Early adopters from coast to coast can get their grubby hands on the device for $200, which will give you a 4.3-inch qHD display, 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB of RAM, Android 2.3 pre-installed, and 4G connectivity (among plenty of other goodies). 'Course, the Now Network's evident 4G switchover may dissuade a few of us from committing to WiMAX for a full two years, but we digress.

T-Mobile G2x Gingerbread update running through employee trials, "coming soon" just got closer

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

You didn't think T-Mobile forgot all about you G2x users out there, did ya? The phone, foreordained to become the carrier's poster child, didn't have the best launch ever; when you release a device plagued with glitches and a nearly-immediate inventory shortage, you're not really starting off on the right foot. Don't let those "out of stock" signs fool you into thinking the mystical handset has been completely wiped from existence, however. It's still around -- in fact, the "Get More" network is hard at work to give more, prepping the phone's update to Gingerbread that'll likely include much-needed fixes. We reached out to a T-Mobile spokesperson, who briefed us on the progress of this elusi...

ZTE Skate coasting into UK retailers... in September

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Oh, now it's on. Not too long ago, we learned the ZTE Skate Monte Carlo would be "coming soon" to Orange in the UK. While the citrus-flavored network has yet to pin down an actual release date -- or price -- Clove Technology, a mobile-centric reseller based in England, is telling its customers to expect a September 19th arrival and £250 price tag (subject to change, anyway). Naturally, the announcement of an actual, honest-to-goodness Skate falls in line with ZTE's recent announcement that it would begin selling its hardware -- replete with ZTE badging -- directly to UK consumers. If you've got the gamblin' spirit and are willing to put money on Clove, the pre-order madness has already begun...

Motorola Triumph ascends to Virgin Mobile, can be yours for $300

Motorola Triumph ascends to Virgin Mobile, can be yours for $300

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Freedom can sometimes feel confining: you want to have a top-notch data device and be loosed from the shackles of two-year contracts at the same time, but the selection of zero-commitment smartphones can seem downright laughable. The Motorola Triumph may be your hero; it tops the Android lineup on Virgin Mobile, and all it'll cost you is three Benjamins. The newest flagship smartphone offers 4.1-inch WVGA display, a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 CPU, 512MB RAM, and dual cameras with 720p video capture. If prepaid isn't your preferred style, a $300 handset of this caliber (and no contract to boot) may be enough to nudge you in that direction. Just be sure to enjoy your unlimited data as much as possi...

MetroPCS will begin transition to VoLTE early next year

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

US carriers were quick to acknowledge their allegiance to Voice over LTE (VoLTE), a 4G VoIP-related technology first demonstrated in February. Ever since that time, however, talk of deployment plans have been replaced by crickets. MetroPCS was the first to break the silence, as CEO Roger Linquist announced at this morning's quarterly earnings call that his company's "planning to begin introducing VoLTE-capable handsets early next year to move voice as well as data traffic to [its] LTE network." The outfit's wasting no time making the full transition to 4G, as it's already begun migrating its SMS and MMS services to this service. An increasing sense of urgency is likely hitting the company ha...

Nokia N9 release date pushed to mid-September?

Nokia N9 release date pushed to mid-September?

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9

The Nokia N9 flaunts one of the speediest and most impressive cameras out there, but the MeeGo-running device might be delayed and hit shelves only in mid-September, contrary to early talk about it rolling out in the middle of August. The first piece of evidence came from Orange Switzerland which listed the handset with a release date set for September 15th, while later a number of Russian retailers including second-largest phone seller Svyaznoy confirmed that they expect the phone to arrive in mid-September.
This would mean that the phone is likely to meet even more competition from the very successful internationally and soon-to-arrive stateside Samsung Galaxy S II as well as the iPhone5, ...

Rumors have iPhone 3GS stock low, absent in some regions

Posted on Aug 02, 2011 by MG1

Shipments of the iPhone 3GS are diminishing rapidly, at least in certain regions, a report claims. Sources from "a major European iPhone carrier," for instance, say they are expecting few new units to arrive in upcoming weeks. An informant at a "major US based iPhone reseller" meanwhile claims that 3GS stock is substantially lower than normal. The person adds that in several regions in the US, no 3GS shipments are happening at all.
A source "with a hand" in Apple's global shipping operations explains that shipments are dropping rapidly, with little left in the channel. Lastly, a person with a "popular international carrier" alleges that the 3GS has disappeared from the company's stock databa...
