Toshiba has outed its latest Android tablet, the AT300, a 10.1-inch iPad rival running Ice Cream Sandwich on NVIDIA’s quadcore Tegra 3 chipset and promising up to 10hrs runtime. Measuring 8.95mm thick and wrapping its guts in an aluminum shell with a splash of Gorilla Glass up front, the AT300 also has a pair of cameras, with a 2-megapixel front-facer and a 5-megapixel main camera on the back.

Western Digital completes asset transfer to Toshiba

The FTC-imposed transfer of assets by hard drive maker Western Digital (WD) to Toshiba is now completed, the company announced on Tuesday. The move was required by regulatory bodies due to monopoly concerns after WD revealed its intention to purchase Hitachi's Viviti hard drive maker. Previously, Viviti was known as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies.
With the new assets, Toshiba will be capable of building 3.5-inch hard drives for consumers and business-critical applications. If the FTC didn't step in, it believed the deal would be uncompetitive in the industry, resulting in just two global desktop hard drive makers.

Toshiba Celebrates Quarter-Century NAND Flash Anniversary

Toshiba America Electronic Components sent out a reminder on Tuesday that it successfully developed NAND flash memory 25 years ago. Just think: in 1987, the stock market crashed, FOX made its debut on TV with programming like Married... with Children, The Simpsons and The Tracey Ullman Show, U2 hit the music charts with its first single off The Joshua Tree, Michael Jackson was Bad, and Three Men and a Baby proved that Star Trek's Spock was more than just a mere Vulcan.

Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi's Japan Display merger begins production

Japan Display, the merger between Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi's small and medium-sized touchscreen LCD manufacturing divisions, began operations on April 1st. The relationship between the three companies was announced in August last year, before being formalized in November. Each of the manufacturers has a 10 percent stake in the new firm, with the remaining 70 percent held by the largely government-funded Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ). Including the 200 billion yen (around $2.4 billion) investment by INCJ, Japan Display currently holds 230 billion yen (just over $2.8 billion) in capital.

April 2, 2012: a great day to officially wash your hands of an unprofitable business. On the heels of Philips stuffing its TV biz into a joint venture, Fujitsu announced it has bought out Toshiba's stake in Fujitsu Toshiba Mobile Communications (just like we knew it would). Fujitsu already had a controlling 80.1 percent interest in the company, so this doesn't exactly mark a seismic change in management. Still, with that final 19.9 percent it's now a fully owned subsidiary of the Fujitsu Group, and has been rechristened Fujitsu Mobile Communications. Sharp executive officer Takashi Okuda to take over as president next month

In a move similar to the ones seen at fellow struggling Japanese electronics giants Sony and Panasonic, Sharp has announced a change at the top, swapping out president Mikio Katayama (kicked upstairs to the position of Director, Chairman) for current executive officer Takashi Okuda. The move will go into effect April 1st, giving him the keys after a fiscal year 2012 to forget comes to an end. According to his biography he's been with the company since 1978, although your guess is as good as ours about what he can do to turn around the company's fortunes -- although getting that 8K Super Hi-Vision LCD into production ASAP would be a great start.

Toshiba to update Thrive tablet to Android 4 before summer

Toshiba USA just revealed over Twitter that it plans to update its Thrive 10.1-inch tablet to Android 4.0 before the end of the spring. This puts the release in mid-June, as the summer season starts on June 20.
The Thrive is available in three models, with 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities. They are priced at $429, $479, and $570, respectively. All share the dual-core, 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and a 1280x800 resolution display. It differs from other Android tablets by virtue of its user-removable battery and swappable rear covers. The tablet shipped with Android 3.1 onboard.

Quanta to build Windows 8 ARM tablets for Toshiba, Lenovo?

Toshiba and Lenovo have reportedly signed deals with contractor Quanta Computer for production of new tablets based on the Windows 8 on ARM architecture. Unnamed sources within the industry have told DigiTimes Quanta will handle the tablet production for both companies, with the first models expected to arrive on the market early next year.

Toshiba Portege M930 slider laptop caught ahead of release

Toshiba hasn't officially announced the Toshiba Portege M930, but that didn't stop Microsoft showing off the new sliding laptop on its stand at CES over in Las Vegas. The new mystery model sports a similar design to the Asus Eee Pad Slider released last year and the Sony Vaio laptop concept, also on display at the show. While specs are limited we do know a couple of things aside from the rather unusual hinge design that sees the screen face outwards or inwards when closed.

Toshiba has unleashed its first full HD 3D camcorder in the shape of the Toshiba Camileo Z100. Not only can the camcorder capture dazzling (apparently) 3D, but it can also play it back on the 7.1cm glasses-free 3D touchscreen. Now that's multi-tasking. The dual lens system also offers 8x digital zoom, full HD 2D capture (1920 x 1080 at 30fps) and can take still pictures up to 16MP.

Toshiba's 2012 line of Blu-ray players will support DLNA streaming, as well as the now-standard Netflix, Vudu, and YouTube playback. The 2D and 3D players will match the design of the company's Aero LED TVs and come in Wi-Fi ready models available in April and Wi-Fi enabled versions coming in May. Pricing hasn't been announced, but we may be able to find out today on the floor at CES.

It's not a big surprise after launching in Germany and Japan, but Toshiba PR has confirmed to us and CNET that the company's 3,840x2,160 resolution autostereoscopic 3DTV will make its US debut in the first quarter of 2012, matching the "end of fiscal year" prediction we'd heard previously. There's no details on pricetag or model #, but given its $10,000~ sticker price overseas, we'd start shaking out those couch cushions now. The LCD maintains its QuadHD resolution when displaying 2D content, however switching into 3D mode drops the resolution to 720p. Toshiba Excite X10 tablet gets release and price info

The tag line for the Toshiba Excite X10 tablet has been that it will be the "thinnest and lightest" 10" tablet, but even before its official announcement it saw some competition on those claims from the Lenovo IdeaTab S2. The S2 has been announced as a 10" tablet at .3" thick and 1.1 pounds, while the Excite X10 is said to be .3" thick and 1.2 pounds. More exact millimeter measurements may show which is really the thinnest, but we're not sure how the weight war could change.

It's dangerous to throw titles like "world's thinnest" and "world's lightest" around at events like CES -- what was a record breaker on Tuesday morning has a tendency to look a bit portly by Wednesday afternoon. But, never mind the caution, here comes Toshiba pledging both the thinnest and the lightest 10.1-inch tablet and 13.3-inch Ultrabook (though that latter one could just be referring to the Portege Z835 we've already reviewed). We'll have to wait a few days for any further details, though.
