Toshiba Portege M930 slider laptop caught ahead of release

Toshiba hasn't officially announced the Toshiba Portege M930, but that didn't stop Microsoft showing off the new sliding laptop on its stand at CES over in Las Vegas. The new mystery model sports a similar design to the Asus Eee Pad Slider released last year and the Sony Vaio laptop concept, also on display at the show. While specs are limited we do know a couple of things aside from the rather unusual hinge design that sees the screen face outwards or inwards when closed.

It's dangerous to throw titles like "world's thinnest" and "world's lightest" around at events like CES -- what was a record breaker on Tuesday morning has a tendency to look a bit portly by Wednesday afternoon. But, never mind the caution, here comes Toshiba pledging both the thinnest and the lightest 10.1-inch tablet and 13.3-inch Ultrabook (though that latter one could just be referring to the Portege Z835 we've already reviewed). We'll have to wait a few days for any further details, though. Here are some of the first pictures of Toshiba's NB510 netbook, which will be released at CES, next week. The NB510 will be a middle-ground in terms of value and features, in between the NB520 and NB500 launched in late-2010, although it's driven by the latest 3rd generation Atom processors. This 10-incher sports a display resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, and is driven by Atom N2600 or N2800 processors; along with 1 GB of DDR3-800 MHz memory, 320 GB storage, and Windows 7 Starter Edition making up its feature-set. Available in three color options, its prices start at around US $400.

Are we going to have to petition Congress to change Thursday to Ultrabookday? If the flood of announcements keeps up like this, we might just have to take that drastic step. First, Lenovo unveiled three different Ultrabook models… Wait, did we say first? Actually, Toshiba managed to squeak in under the wire and yank the curtains off of its Ultrabook prior to Lenovo's announcement, making the Portégé Z830 series the first Intel-based MacBook Air clones out of the gate. Officially, at least.

In the rush to move everything into the third dimension, Toshiba has announced their latest glasses-free 3D notebook, the Qosmio F755 3D. The laptop is even capable of displaying 2D and 3D content at the same time. So how does it all work?
Toshiba achieves the 3D glasses-free viewing by using the latest in auto-stereoscopic display technology. The 15.6" LCD is a full HD TruBrite panel with Active Lens technology, with double parallax technology that allows it to project two sets of images at the same time, splitting them between the left and right eyes to create the 3D effect. Tricky, tricky, Toshiba. There's a story going around today that Toshiba's new Qosmio F755 laptop is the world's first laptop with a glasses-free 3D screen, but that's just not true.
Back in 2003, we reviewed the Sharp Actius RD3D, the real first U.S. laptop to include a parallax barrier 3D screen. At the time, reviewer Bill Howard said "Our experience viewing still images was outstanding. You do notice an apparent loss of resolution going into 3-D mode (each eye sees 512-by-768 worth of pixels), but the foreground-to-background separation is outstanding. It was even better playing a Spiderman demo movie."

Toshiba Thrive tablet lands at Best Buy July 10

The much-anticipated Toshiba Thrive 3.1 Android tablet will be available to purchase from Best Buy July 10.
The news comes from Best Buy, as I’m still waiting on official word from Toshiba but it looks like you’ll be able to head to the electronics store on Sunday to plunk down some cash for the tablet. You actually won’t have to bring too much cash with you, as the Toshiba Thrive Android 3.1 tablet will cost $479.99 with 16 GB and the 32 GB model will cost $579.99. An 8 GB model for $429 is also expected to be available but it’s unclear if this will be at all stores or limited to Best Buy’s website.

The Toshiba Thrive 10.1-inch Android tablet took its time to hit the market. It was first unveiled at CES but waited for Android Honeycomb and wisely priced itself to compete.
