HTC has admitted the US road to recovery will be a challenging one, with CEO Peter Chou conceding that growth outside of North America may have to be extra-impressive to balance its market losses. “It’s difficult to recover our market share in the US” Chou said in the aftermath of HTC’s Q1 financial results, the WSJ reports. ”We will have more balanced growth in different markets this year,” he insists, however, suggesting growth in Asia and Europe is strongly likely.

China Times: HTC wants to develop its own processors for low-end phones

China Times: HTC wants to develop its own processors for low-end phones

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

Encroaching into the semiconductor business might not seem the most obvious move for a phone manufacturer that's trying to unify its efforts. Nevertheless, China Times reports that HTC has signed a "memorandum of cooperation" with ST-Ericsson to co-develop a new dedicated chip for low-end handsets coming out next year. Since ST-Ericsson is a fabless chip designer, HTC won't risk getting silicon between its fingernails. Instead, if this agreement is what it seems, the Taiwanese manufacturer may simply want more direct control over its supply chains and to reduce its current reliance on ready-made designs from Qualcomm or NVIDIA. After all, it can't be easy for HTC's new CFO, looking on while ...

HTC predicts 55 percent revenue jump, could hint at strong One sales

HTC predicts 55 percent revenue jump, could hint at strong One sales

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

HTC's results for Q1 2012 were a long way short of spectacular, but they came too early to see any impact from sales of its latest wares -- particularly the flagship One X and the ambitious mid-range One S. According to Reuters, the Taiwanese manufacturer now predicts that its revenue will leap by 55 percent in Q2, compared to that bad last quarter. That kind of growth equates to around $3.56 billion, which isn't so impressive when you compare it to the same quarter last year, when turnover broke records and was around 20 percent higher, but it's still an encouraging sign that this company could reap what it sowed at MWC.

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

The HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE has been outed on Verizon’s “Droid Does” website. The new Incredible is equipped with a 4-inch qHD Super LCD display, a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD slot and an 8-megapixel rear camera — possibly the same one found on HTC’s One-series smartphones. The handset also runs HTC’s latest Sense 4.0 skin atop Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. In line with Verizon’s other 4G LTE smartphones, the latest Incredible will seemingly be offered for $299.99 alongside a new two-year agreement. The DROID Incredible 4G LTE has since been removed from Verizon’s site and there is no word from Verizon regarding a release date.

HTC One V coming to Canada on Bell, will reunite with One S

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

Canadians looking to hunt down the smallest addition to HTC's One series are in luck. According to a MobileSyrup tipster, it'll arrive on Bell next week, in all its aluminum unibody glory. While the One X looks to be confined to Rogers in the Land of the Maple Leaf, both the One S and One V are going to be offered by Bell Mobility. The mole also hinted at pricing below CND $300, matching those entry-level credentials we've explored just recently. Not a fan of Bell? Don't get disheartened -- the Android 4.0 minnow will also make an appearance on Telus, so 'chin' up.

SEATTLE—With HTC's One S and One X getting glowing reviews, it looks like more slim, touchscreen slabs are in the smartphone maker's future.
Here at Frequencies, a bloggers' event thrown by HTC, top HTC designers have been laying out the company's choices. HTC is picking slim phones over huge batteries, camera quality over megapixels, pure touchscreen phones over QWERTY, and is seriously looking at Wi-Fi Display for the future, executives said.
The most controversial quote of the day came when HTC's vice president of phone strategy Bjorn Kilburn said that the company had rejected models with giant 3000mAh batteries similar to the one attached to the Motorola Razr Maxx.

Rumor: HTC is working with ST-Ericsson on their own custom chip

Apple’s engineers custom designed the A4, A5, and A5X chips that are found inside their products. Samsung puts their own Exynos chips inside their smartphones and tablets. Back in February of this year, Huawei announced that they’re going to fit a custom chip inside their flagship Android device, the Ascend D1 Quad. This begs the question, when are others going to get in on the custom action? According to Unwired View, HTC is working together with ST-Ericsson on a custom chip that’s purpose built for low-end Android smartphones due to hit the market in 2013. We don’t know how much work HTC is actually going to do with regards to the chip design process, but something tells us that they’re go...

HTC EVO 3D retired from Sprint’s lineup

While we mentioned the other day that the HTC EVO 3D was part of Amazon’s penny sale until the end of the month, it looks like glasses-free 3D handset has gone missing elsewhere – Sprint’s website.
It makes sense considering the EVO 4G LTE’s debut is just around the corner, but it is interesting that it was just here one day, gone the next. The folk over at Android Police reached out to Sprint to find out what happened to the Android device. Sprint responded by saying,

Thanks to Rogers, those of you in Canada will be able to get your hands on this Sense 4, ICS-filled handset as soon as today. Rogers says HTC's One kin is coming as an exclusive to its shop, currently listing it for $169.99 on "select" three-year deals or $624.99 without any attachments. Keep in mind, this specific model's loaded with the Snapdragon S4 chip, which is slightly different than the One we reviewed a few weeks back. However, if all those cores don't make a difference to you, the...

HTC usage share drops 60% in five months, study finds

Posted on Apr 20, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: HTC

Not long ago, HTC posted six consecutive months of record revenue thanks to strong demand for its Android-powered smartphones. The company’s record run came to a screeching halt in October last year with the release of Apple’s iPhone 4S. HTC’s fourth quarter earnings fell, missing Wall Street’s expectations, and the rough patch continued in the first quarter of 2012. To compound matters, the latest study conducted by ad network Chitika shows that the troubled handset maker’s usage share has declined by more than 60% in the past five months from 18.22% to 7.28% based on traffic across its network. At the same time, Apple’s share has increased by 64% from 46.84% to 76.88% and other Android ven...

HTC One V launch date confirmed

HTC One V launch date confirmed

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

If the HTC One X and One S are just a little bit out of your price range, then HTC has you covered with the One V. It’s not packing a lot of power in terms of specs, but the hardware and software experience aren’t too far removed from what you would get with the more expensive phones. Carphone Warehouse has just announced pricing and availability information for the One V in the UK.
You’ll be able to pre-order the HTC One V starting from today, with the handset being free on £20.50 a month tariffs. Carphone Warehouse will be offering the phone on O2, Orange, and Vodafone contracts, with tariffs naturally becoming more expensive if you want more minutes or data.

AT&T to launch HTC One X within a week

AT&T to launch HTC One X within a week

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

We have been informed by a trusted source that HTC’s One X, one of the best smartphones ever to come out of Taiwan, will be available on AT&T as early as this week. We have also been told that AT&T may announce availability details tomorrow, and that the handset’s release should follow within five to seven days of the carrier’s announcement. AT&T’s version of the HTC One X swaps out the quad-core Tegra 3 processor for a dual-core Snapdragon CPU in order to accommodate 4G LTE connectivity, but unlike the complete redesign we saw on Sprint’s EVO 4G LTE, the AT&T version should be nearly identical to the international model.
