Amazon testing locker system that sends your deliveries to 7-Eleven

Amazon may be testing a new service that gives you the option to have products you ordered delivered to your local 7-Eleven. Although a bit odd, the idea can offer convenience to those who don’t feel safe having products left outside their door while away at work. This could also benefit those that won’t be home to sign for a delivery or perhaps others who simply don’t want their spouses or housemates to know about a purchase.
According to The Daily, a source familiar with the situation says that the service involves Amazon placing large computerized locker systems at various 7-Eleven stores across the country, with the first prototype already installed at a 7-Eleven store in Seattle’s Capit...

I rolled on over to Amazon.com this morning and was surprised to see the redesigned image you see above but then it all made sense: Amazon is testing out a more tablet-friendly design.
This isn’t just for its rumored upcoming tablets, as Amazon understands that devices like the iPad are becoming more and more prevalent and it needs to be ahead of that curve. In general, the Amazon tablet-friendly design takes many of the familiar elements of Amazon but makes it more finger-friendly.

It’s almost guaranteed that Amazon will release a tablet or two to go against the iPad and many analysts believe that Amazon has the best shot at dethroning Apple in this market for multiple reasons. Let’s take a look at how likely it is for Amazon to succeed in the tablet space.
Of course, this is going to be somewhat speculative because the products haven’t even been announced. Rumors suggest that Amazon will release a pair of Android-based tablets by the holiday season which are powered by NVIDIA chips and will have deep hooks into Amazon services. Let’s use that as the jumping off point.
The case for

Amazon has just registered a new domain name over the weekend that has spawned new speculation of interesting developments ahead for its Kindle e-reader. The KindleScribe.com domain was registered by Amazon.com Holdings on August 20 along with KindleScribes.com for good measure. Both domains have yet to resolve to a landing page that could provide any hints, but the name does bring some excitement.

Amazon cracks down on e-book publishers using private label rights

Amazon cracks down on e-book publishers using private label rights

Posted on Aug 16, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Amazon

Amazon has started to crack down on the publishing of e-books that use the private label rights or PLR. PLR is a way that a writer can write a digital book for the Kindle service and then sell the rights to other people to republish it as their own. It’s like writing a how-to book and then selling publishing rights to others. The problem with this is that the same book ends up in the Kindle store with different titles and names associated with it confusing the customer.
Amazon is trying to fix the issue and prevent confusion on the Kindle store and has started to remove PLR e-books that are on the store. Amazon’s official reason for removing the books sent to the people that publish them is ...

Amazon snatches up Kindle related domains, Kindle Air rumors start circulating

Amazon snatches up Kindle related domains, Kindle Air rumors start circulating

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Honestly, we're not sure what to make of all the rumors and leaks surrounding Amazon recently. It's safe to assume the company is working on a tablet, and we're long overdue for an update to E-Ink Kindle. But, a recent round of domain registrations has sent the interwebs into a tizzy with some suggesting a new product, dubbed the Kindle Air, is in the pipeline. Though Amazon's name doesn't appear anywhere in the registrant information for Kindleair.com, the name MarkMonitor does -- the firm Bezos and crew just used to register kindlesocialnetwork.com and kindlesocialnetworking.com. Now, companies pickup domains all the time just to protect their brand, and it seems a bit odd that Amazon woul...

$700 HP TouchPad 4G now available for pre-order from Amazon

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

The HP TouchPad 4G with HSPA+ support is now available for pre-order from Amazon. The online retailer doesn’t give a specific launch date and instead says “this item has not yet been released,” and that customers “may pre-order it now and [Amazon] will deliver it to you when it arrives.” The TouchPad made its debut on July 1st as a Wi-Fi only device with a 1.2GHz processor. In our review we said the device was “just good” and that its software needed a “shot of adrenaline.” However, AT&T’s upcoming version will sport a faster 1.5GHz processor, the aforementioned HSPA+ support and HP’s latest webOS 3.0.2 software. Amazon is currently listing the TouchPad 4G for $699.99, which means you’ll be ...

Amazon Expects To Sell 3 Million Tablets In Fall?

We haven’t heard much recently about the rumored Amazon tablets codenamed Hollywood and Coyote, but that’s because it’s the calm before the storm. The tablets are indeed brewing and new supplier information suggests that Amazon expects to ship as much as 3 million units this fall.
According to Taiwan Economic News, Amazon has already placed orders with contract manufacturer Quanta Computer, which was responsible for RIM’s PlayBook tablet that recently received FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) certification. This honor will mean increased business from government procurement. Quanta will also be manufacturing Sony’s S1 and S2 tablets.

Amazon UK has the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 on pre-order; shipping next week

Posted on Aug 05, 2011 by MG1

At long last, the European market is finally seeing the long awaited Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but not to ruin the monumental arriving, it seems that we might soon see its slightly smaller sibling arriving in the very near future.
Always a consideration for those who don’t want to be trotting around with a large gadget, Amazon UK currently has the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 up for pre-order on their site. Interestingly, its in-stock date is set for next week on August 12th, which means that it’s coming much sooner than what most people think.
However, it’s surely sporting one serious price tag out of the gate and seems intent on catching the gaze of only diehard early adopters. Priced at...

Is the Amazon App Store bad for developers?

Is the Amazon App Store bad for developers?

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Whenever I get a new Android device, I always throw on the Amazon App Store in order to get free, high-quality paid apps each day. While that’s great for consumers and has surely brought in a lot of traffic, is this approach good for app makers?
According to a blog post from the Shifty Jelly team, the Amazon App Store free app giveaway program is great for consumers and for Amazon but it can be kind of a raw deal for developers. The Shift Jelly team said that it was approached by Amazon to be the free paid app of the day but it wouldn’t receive any revenue for it. This isn’t the case of Amazon taking the financial hit, as the store is asking the developers to take the hit for good press and ...

Study says people are waiting on a cheap tablet from Amazon

Android could be getting a huge boost in a few months, if Amazon can hit the market as aggressively as many want. A study from Retrevo is showing that consumers are looking for cheaper tablet options and would seriously consider Amazon if in the market for an iPad competitor.
The study was done with a pretty small group of just 1,000 people, but the results are pretty interesting, if they can be trusted. The results show that, unsurprisingly, cost is the biggest barrier to entry in the tablet world. As far as the "most important factor" in buying a tablet 48% cited cost, with 28% wanting a better screen, and 20% looking for better text input options. A whopping 79% of respondents would cons...

Cloud-based computing services aren’t new by any meaning of the word, but only in the past few years have we been hearing an increasing buzz in the community on the subject. Big names like Microsoft and Google have already established successful cloud computing platforms while others like Apple and their iCloud service are just around the corner. Reuters is reporting that Washington-based online retailer Amazon suspects that “the Cloud” will be responsible for their next billion-dollar business.
Amazon is primarily known for their online store but the truth is that they have been offering cloud computing to business for many years. After the dot-com bubble burst in 2000, the company realize...
