Amazon on Thursday announced that its mobile marketplace, the Amazon Appstore, is celebrating its first birthday. The man who was in charge of getting new apps and content on the Windows Phone Marketplace has left Microsoft to pursure a similar occupation at Amazon. Brandon Watson apparently feels that the online bookseller-turned-behemoth has a brighter future. Or they offered him more money. Or both. Either way, it’s definitely a setback for Microsoft.

Amazon Student app lands on Android

Amazon continues its assault on mobile, as it is now bringing its student app to Android and this will enable kids to potentially save on those pricey textbooks.
The aptly named Amazon Student app will enable students to price-check textbooks by scanning the barcode and you’ll be able to buy it with one click. Using this app will also give students a free six-month Amazon Prime membership and this is pretty darn cool because it gives you free two-day shipping on all your purchases.

Hackers have been making steady progress on the Kindle Fire, but a fairly important milestone was reached yesterday – rooted users can install the Android Market, providing access to all of the Android apps they already purchased through the official market. Prior to this, users had to choose between repurchasing the apps from Amazon’s market or installing a custom ROM.
Amazon may not be thrilled – they are selling each Fire at a loss and hope to make their profit from selling users content. This is a victory for consumers, however, who will most likely still want to use Amazon’s services, but not be forced to double-dip on apps they already paid money for.

Amazon reportedly has Palm in its sights and is super close to pulling the trigger on a deal that could benefit both it and Hewlett Packard. Let's face it, HP screwed the pooch with its Palm acquisition with its 180 on webOS hardware, and even though the company claims it's committed to focusing on webOS software, that was never the sole intention. It's not surprising HP is shopping Palm, but will Amazon make a move?

Whenever I get a new Android device, I always throw on the Amazon App Store in order to get free, high-quality paid apps each day. While that’s great for consumers and has surely brought in a lot of traffic, is this approach good for app makers?
