UK Kindle Touch starts shipping week early

Those in the UK who pre-ordered the Kindle Touch or Kindle Touch 3G have been getting a nice surprise today, as Amazon has released the devices a week earlier than anticipated. Originally slated to be in stock from 27 April, the new eBook readers are now already on sale (on 20 April).
"Orders from customers worldwide for our new line of electronic ink Kindles have exceeded our expectations," said Kindle EU's vice president, Jorrit Van der Meulen.
"We know that UK customers are eager to get their hands on these new Kindles, which is why we’re delighted to be able to ship several days earlier than we planned."

Amazon profits down in Q4 2011 despite Kindle success

Amazon has just announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011 and despite sales of Kindles nearly tripling over the Holidays, the company’s profits were down and profit margins were very tiny. Amazon’s net income stood at $177 million, down 58% year-over-year. Just as before, though, the company gave no hard numbers about Kindle sales, so that relative growth gives us little idea about actual sales.

Amazon HTML5 Kindle format may already be in graphic novels

Amazon may be beta testing its new Kindle e-book format with selected publishers. The new format, referred to by Amazon as Kindle Format 8 (KF8), provides support for HTML5-based content. The Digital Reader, which revealed the testing, also reports that a number of graphic novels may already be available in the format and readable by the new Kindle Fire.
Amazon has developed the KF8 e-book format to optimize the capabilities of the recently released Android tablet and other full mobile platforms. Kindle Touch jailbroken with simple MP3 hack

Just because the Kindle Touch isn't Android-based doesn't mean that it wouldn't be fun and potentially useful to gain root on it. Developer Yifan Lu has managed to do just that and has released the jailbreak tool for the e-reader in a format that might surprise you: an mp3 file. It turns out that the Kindle Touch's operating system is slightly different from previous Kindles in that it uses significantly more HTML in its UI instead of Java, which apparently means that — for now — it's much easier to exploit. Lu was able to put the rooting commands in the ID3 comment tag of an mp3 file, complete with a "jailbroken' splash screen.

France is getting the Kindle! No, seriously, until now the land of baguettes and Nicolas Sarkozy has had to make do without the world's most popular ebook reader. Starting today though, our French friends can pre-order a Kindle (no touch and no keyboard) for €99 and have access to over 825,000 titles from the newly launched Kindle store. Was it too cheap? Well, here's some great news for fourth-generation Kindle users already tiring of its embedded ads looking cheap alongside their Vertu phones. You can now pay Amazon the requisite fee and unsubscribe from built-in advertising and offers. Visit the Manage your Kindle webpage and you can edit your subscriptions for the newest entry-level e-reader. There seems to be no option, however, to do the reverse just yet. Would Amazon hand over $30 to push those special offers into our currently ad-free Kindle?

Amazon has just registered a new domain name over the weekend that has spawned new speculation of interesting developments ahead for its Kindle e-reader. The KindleScribe.com domain was registered by Amazon.com Holdings on August 20 along with KindleScribes.com for good measure. Both domains have yet to resolve to a landing page that could provide any hints, but the name does bring some excitement.

AT&T teams with Amazon to offer $139 Kindle 3G with Special Offers

Amazon announced on Wednesday that AT&T will sponsor a new Kindle 3G with Special Offers, a deal that has lowered the price of the device $50 to $139.99. In a statement, AT&T’s CEO Ralph de la Vega said that the Kindle 3G is “by far the fastest growing connected device” on AT&T’s network. Amazon’s “Special Offers” devices come at the cost of ad-sponsored content. Users will see advertisements at the bottom of the screen and can launch the “AdMash” Kindle application to choose which advertisements are displayed.
