This Super Bowl Sunday, the company is releasing a new 7-inch Android Honeycomb tablet -- the ZTE Optik -- with pretty decent specs and a $100 price tag that undercuts the Kindle Fire by half. There's a catch, of course. To get that dirt-cheap price, you'll need to sign up for a 2-year data plan with Sprint, whose tablet data options start at $20 for 1GB/mo. (Wha...?!) Otherwise, you'll need to plunk down $350 in upfront cash to go plan-free.

The next generation of the Apple iPad could arrive in stores late March, nearly a year after the launch of the iPad 2, if we are to believe a report by Japanese blog Macotakara that says Apple will hold a media event in the beginning of March. The event is expected to bring us an official announcement of the third iPad.
Manufacturers such as Foxconn and Pegatron have allegedly started production of the new tablet. Foxconn is responsible for an overwhelming 85% of all future iPads made:
“According to Chinese source, Foxconn Technology and Pegatron Technology started next generation of iPad assembly with Foxconn bearing 85% and Pegatron taking 15% of the production load like as iPhone 4S. Acce...

Linux Dev Unveils Fully Open, KDE/Mer-Powered "Spark" Tablet

Tablets are nifty, but for the most part, they're built to be walled gardens; Apple is notorious for its heavy-handed curation, Microsoft plans on keeping Windows 8's Metro-style apps close to the chest, and the hot-selling Kindle Fire is a deeply tweaked and thoroughly managed variant of Android. One Linux developer hopes to make things more customizable with Spark, a Mer/KDE Plasma Active-powered tablet that's fully unlocked and open for tinkering.

Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 still banned in Germany; EU examining Samsung's patents

Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 still banned in Germany; EU examining Samsung's patents

Posted on Feb 01, 2012 by MG1

The Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court has upheld the ban in Germany of the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 but also added that the Samsung GALAXY Tab 8.9 falls within the scope of the ruling. The Korean based manufacturer has already worked around the injunction by making changes to the original model and re-introduced it as the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1N. Apple has tried to have that tablet banned, but to no avail. The decision made on Tuesday was based on a violation of German unfair competition law instead of the original community design that the original ruling was based on.
Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents says that the ruling is "a mixed bag" for Apple. Since Samsung already has been allowed to ...

Notion Ink explains picking TI over NVIDIA for Adam II | Electronista

Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shraven has taken the unusual step of explaining why his Android-based tablet company opted to follow its NVIDIA Tegra 2-powered Adam tablet with a TI OMAP 4 processor for its Adam II . Rather than plumping for the quad-core Tegra 3, Shraven argues that the TI OMAP platform offers Notion Ink certain advantages. As a small vendor, with its limited software and hardware engineering resources, it believed that it could not leverage the NVIDIA Tegra 3 as well as it can the TI OMAP 4, leading to a better implementation for end users.

The HP TouchPad was the most sought after tablet after the company kicked off a fire sale bringing its price down to just $100, but if you didn’t act quick chances are you couldn’t find it anywhere. Now, it’s back on sale - it costs more, but the price is still very very low at just $219.99 for the 32GB HP TouchPad.
This is a one-day deal on Woot! so again, you’d better make up your mind and get it soon, as it won’t last.
The TouchPad is originally running on webOS, but if you don’t like the platform that is about to get open sourced soon, you can use the efforts of the CyanogenMod team and get ICS on it. The custom ROM got released in its early alpha version, but most of the things are wor...

Samsung GALAXY Tab with dual-core 2GHz processor rumored for MWC

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Update: The Samsung GALAXY Tab 11.6 tested by Android and Me had a dual-core 2GHz processor, not a quad-core processor as we originally reported. We thank our loyal readers for bringing this to our attention
Earlier today we passed along the word that Samsung was weighing its options when it comes to announcing the Samsung Galaxy S III at the MWC in Barcelona next month. While no one knows if the smartphone will be presented at the show, how about Samsung's new high-end tablet? Android and Me is saying that at a closed door media event at CES earlier this month, they had a chance to play with a device that just might be a Samsung GALAXY Tab 11.6 with a dual-core 2GHz processor under the hood...

Apple Will Worry About iPad Competition When It Exists

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG3

When asked today about how Apple was handling the competition from lower-priced tablets—specifically the Kindle Fire—Apple CEO Tim Cook said, effectively, that it isn't a competition at all. Which would sound like hubris, if the numbers didn't back him up so strongly.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 to hit European retailers this April?

Acer Iconia Tab A510 to hit European retailers this April?

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG3

Amidst the madness that was CES, Acer quietly snuck its Iconia Tab A510 onto the showroom floor, tucking the tablet into the folds of NVIDIA's booth. While the company was more than willing to fess up to the slate's specs -- quad-core Tegra 3 processor, skinned Ice Cream Sandwich UX, 1280 x 800 display -- little in the way of pricing and availability were revealed. If a report out of Germany is to be believed, however, Europeans (sorry, statesiders) might very well see the 10.1-incher hit retail as early as this April, with a €500 price tag in tow. That's all the rumor mill's wrought for now, folks, but we'll keep you posted should the news go official at CeBIT 2012.

Sony has told TechRadar that it will be bringing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to its tablet portfolio this spring – which is the first time the company has actually named a time frame for the update.
Before, Sony would only confirm a 'coming soon' but at an event in London, a spokesperson for the company said that ICS would be hitting both the Sony Tablet S and Sony Tablet P in the spring and at the same time.
This means that the tablets will be getting Ice Cream Sandwich around the same time as Sony's phone portfolio.

Android 4.0 runs on an AMD tablet

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

We just remembered there was one last curiosity we saw at AMD's suite at CES 2012: this AMD Fusion tablet, running Android 4.0. Before you get too excited, AMD was quick to point out that this MSI WindPad 110W didn't get Ice Cream Sandwich through any effort of its own. What you're looking at is actually the work of the Android-x86 project, which very recently released a test Android 4.0 ISO for AMD Brazos-based tablets like the one above.
