Android Malware Genome Project wants to fight malware by understanding it

Android malware is increasingly becoming a concern for users, but a team of researchers at North Carolina State University is hoping to help fight the problem by understanding it better. Lead by assistant professor Xuxian Jiang, the Android Malware Genome Project is collecting samples of Android malware in order to categorize them and release the code to other researchers. So far over 1,200 samples have been collected and organized based on features like how they're downloaded and activated. Did you know that an SSD-equipped Windows 8 PC can boot up in under seven seconds? Watch the video below if you don't believe it, Microsoft has really optimized the hell out of the startup operations of its next OS — although that has come at a somewhat amusing cost: you no longer get enough time to interrupt the boot process. The current ability to press F8 while your PC is powering up and the ever-familiar BIOS menu prompt of "Press F2 to enter setup" will both be missing from Windows 8 computers, simply because the hardware and software have advanced to such an extent as to leave users with too little time to access them.

Nokia cancels Symbian Carla, Belle FP2 to be the last Symbian?

Nokia’s Symbian sales have plunged last quarter significantly, and now Nokia Italy has revealed that Symbian Carla, the third major update after Symbian Anna and Nokia Belle, is cancelled. At least that's what Nokia's Product Marketing Manager Mathias Fiorin has said, according to Nokialino, an Italian Nokia fan site, that allegedly got the info straight from the horse's mouth.

Remember the leaked images of Microsoft Office for the iPad we saw a few months ago? The ones that Microsoft claimed were fakes? We were suspicious about their denials at the time, and it turns out the only “fakers” may have been Microsoft’s PR team. According to “a reliable source” speaking to BGR, Microsoft will be releasing tablet versions of Microsoft Office not just for the iPad, but for Android as well this November.

We knew it was coming, and yesterday Microsoft turned off access to the Windows Phone Marketplace for devices that aren’t running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Microsoft made the move because it wanted only devices with the added security and performance enhancements built into Marketplace Windows Phone 7.5 to access the Market. Further, making Windows Phone 7.5 a requirement paves the way for features Microsoft is building into future Marketplace updates.

Jury issues verdict in Android suit, finds that Google doesn't infringe Oracle patents

It appears that the jury has come to a conclusion in the Oracle v. Google trial, determining that Android does not infringe Oracle patents. Judge William Alsup of the US District Court for Northern California exonerated the search giant following a trial that lasted three weeks, ruling that Google did not infringe on six claims in US Patent RE38,104, along two claims in US Patent 6,061,520. Jurors were dismissed following today's ruling, with the trial's damages phase reportedly set to begin on Tuesday.

Dell: Windows 8 touchscreen devices to be priced higher

Touchscreen laptops and tablets with the upcoming Windows 8 OS will be priced higher than their non-touchscreen counterparts, Dell's CEO said on Tuesday.
Dell will offer a full complement of Windows 8 products when Microsoft launches its new OS, CEO Michael Dell said during the company's quarterly earnings call. The touchscreen Windows 8 products will occupy higher price bands, which could mean higher profit margins for Dell, he said.

Good news if you own an Amaze 4G smartphone from HTC. For those of you who do, HTC just released an update to Android 4.0, the latest and greatest open source mobile operating system from Google more deliciously known as Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). Owners of HTC's Thunderbolt and Desire HD smartphones aren't as lucky, having to wait perhaps until August, or longer, receive an ICS upgrade, according to HTC's newly published Android 4.0 roadmap.

Despite the fact that Windows 8 is expected to launch in October, Microsoft still has high hopes for its Windows 7 operating system. The software giant predicts that 350 million Windows 7 devices will ship by the end of 2012, Bloomberg reported. “It makes Windows the most popular single system,” Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at a forum in Seoul, South Korea, although he didn’t provide any figures for comparison. Windows 7 was released in October 2009 and within two years, the operating system surpassed Windows XP to become the world’s most popular OS.

Motorola recently updated its Android release timeline and revealed that certain devices will remain on Android 2.3 rather than receiving an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The handsets in question are both modern and more than capable of running the latest Android operating system, however the vendor claims the latest software won’t “improve” the devices, and that’s why updates will not be released. Both the DROID 3 and DROID X2 will remain on Android 2.3, despite the fact that both handsets run dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors and were released not even a year ago.
