Windows Marketplace now requires 7.5 Mango

Windows Marketplace now requires 7.5 Mango

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

We knew it was coming, and yesterday Microsoft turned off access to the Windows Phone Marketplace for devices that aren’t running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Microsoft made the move because it wanted only devices with the added security and performance enhancements built into Marketplace Windows Phone 7.5 to access the Market. Further, making Windows Phone 7.5 a requirement paves the way for features Microsoft is building into future Marketplace updates.

Here are 101 reasons not to buy Windows Phone 7.5

Posted on May 18, 2012 by MG1

Ah, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango! Just saying the name of the platform seems to start controversy - and don’t get us wrong, we appreciate the design work and the universally smooth performance Microsoft achieved with it, but it’s clear that so far it’s had a lukewarm reception at best, and it’s still behind in features when compared to the big two, Android and iOS.
But those are just vague words - Microsoft has been patching bugs, and polishing it out quickly, yet it seems that the list of shortcomings is just too big. How big? Ex-Symbian and currently MeeGo user known as SamKB on My-Symbian gives 101 reasons not to buy Windows Phone Mango, with a couple of bonus ones for the extra flare. Compili...

Microsoft is closing the Windows Phone Marketplace for non-Mango devices

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

Microsoft announced two important changes to the way it operates its Windows Phone Marketplace, and if you’re rocking a WP device, you should know that updating to Mango is a must if you want to keep on using the app catalog.
In the coming weeks, Microsoft will close access to its Marketplace for all devices that haven’t been updated to Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. You’d only be able to browse the Marketplace if you haven’t updated, but you won’t be able to install apps.

The first version of Skype for Windows Phone will not support low-end "Tango" devices, Microsoft has revealed. Although the company delivered a 1.0 release of Skype for Windows Phone over the weekend, Microsoft says it will only install and run on devices with 512MB of memory. The majority of Windows Phone devices include 512MB of RAM, but Microsoft's latest "Tango" handsets only feature 256MB of memory.

New Images Of LG Windows Phone LS831 Emerges

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

While we are still not sure about LG releasing another Windows Phone 7.5 device, there were numerous leaks on their devices/prototypes. This one is LS831 which we saw in last October when it passed the FCC. The device design looks outdated to me and it has a 5MP camera along with a front cam. Since it features a CDMA band, it should release only on Sprint in US if there is any possibility. Visit the source link for more images.

Developers: Microsoft updates “Download for Windows Phone” buttons again

Developers: Microsoft updates “Download for Windows Phone” buttons again

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG1

We’ve already seen Microsoft changing the style of their “Download for Windows Phone” buttons last June, when it did away with the color options and instead provided a consistent grey-orange color scheme. Now, those buttons have been updated once again to replace the generic download buttons with the new Windows Phone logo introduced in Mango, resulting in a red-grey color scheme and more prominent branding that we personally find more appealing than the previous iteration.
In order to comply with the rather strict usage guidelines (understandable since they’re designed to promote consistency), we’ve linked the image to the WMPoweruser app. A brief reminder is in order now that you should us...

Nokia is the largest Windows Phone maker in the world, after one quarter

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

While we can't really say that we're surprised, Nokia has snagged the top spot for Windows Phone devices. Strategy Analytics reports that the Finnish smartphone maker now sits atop the global charts for the Microsoft mobile OS after being in the game for just one quarter. Nokia overtook HTC and Samsung to claim a 33% market share with 0.9 million out of the 2.7 million units shipped in Q4. Aided by the Lumia family's expansion to several new territories and the 36% growth of the platform overall for the quarter, the company has taken "an encouraging baby step forward." GrooveShark’s HTML5 site now works on Windows Phone

GrooveShark’s HTML5 site now works on Windows Phone

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

We have all been told the future of cross-platform apps are HTML5, but a few weeks ago GrooveShark discovered IE9 Mobile was just not ready, and while their HTML5-based streaming music website worked fine in other mobile browsers it did not work at all on Windows Phone 7.
Thankfully Microsoft did not leave it at that, and approached the Grooveshark developer to explore work-arounds. He writes:
Yes, you read that correctly. After my previous post discussing how Grooveshark’s new HTML5 site would not work on Windows Phone 7 devices, Ben Riga, Technical Evangelist on the Windows Phone team, contacted me and offered to help. He discussed the issues with Eric Lawrence, Program Manager at Microso...

Facebook version 2.3 has just gone live in the Windows Phone Marketplace and it's just as big an update as we were expecting. The app has gotten a complete overhaul of the UI which fits in beautifully with WP's Metro UI.
The update not only gives a complete UI redesign, but adds tons of functionality to the app. The app now gives users access to Facebook Pages, Groups, privacy info and banner images. There are new filters to allow you to see specific types of posts in your feed. Additionally, users can now "like" posts in their feed.

Skype for Windows Phone 7 nears release

Skype for Windows Phone 7 nears release

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

Ever since Skype was taken over by Microsoft back in October 2011, a Skype app for its Windows Phone 7 operating system has been on the cards. And now it looks as though it's nearly here after vice president of Skype division, Rick Osterloh, said: "we're working on a Windows Phone product that will be coming out soon," during an interview at CES 2012. The news that Skype will be heading to Windows Phone 7 has been hanging around for some time now as it was initially thought that Microsoft would be launching the Skype app a little earlier, possibly by the end of 2011. However it was not to be, so this "coming soon" CES 2012 quote is very timely. In actual fact, the term "coming soon" could me...

Windows Phone users download more apps than the Android folks, less than the iOS junkies

Windows Phone users download more apps than the Android folks, less than the iOS junkies

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

Microsoft, and the head of developer relations for Windows Phone in particular, Brandon Watson, released a fluff infographic today to explain how the app ecosystem performed in 2011. The Marketplace app store reached 50 000 applications recently, and the infographic shows what type and number of apps people are downloading. Turns out that the average Windows Phone user got 48 apps from there in 2011, compared to 30 for Android and 83 for iOS. This might have to do with the number of apps - although 50 000 sounds more than you'll need in a lifetime, iOS is ten times that, so people get enticed easily when a new quality app comes across. Another interesting part is that all in all 13 000 of t...

The new additions to WP’s Xbox LIVE collection include shooters, action and driving games for all tastes. Along with those new releases, Nokia has also said it’s collaborating with EA to bring 20 of its titles to the platform, so if you have a Nokia Windows Phone you’d get even more gaming action.
