Motorola Ice Cream Sandwich update -- DROID 3 and DROID X2 left in the dark

Motorola Ice Cream Sandwich update -- DROID 3 and DROID X2 left in the dark

Posted on May 22, 2012 by MG1

Motorola recently updated its Android release timeline and revealed that certain devices will remain on Android 2.3 rather than receiving an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The handsets in question are both modern and more than capable of running the latest Android operating system, however the vendor claims the latest software won’t “improve” the devices, and that’s why updates will not be released. Both the DROID 3 and DROID X2 will remain on Android 2.3, despite the fact that both handsets run dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors and were released not even a year ago.

Gingerbread adoption still growing despite age

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

Google updated its Android version tracker on Tuesday, revealing the latest version of its Android operating system is slowly gaining ground. The estimated number of devices running Ice Cream Sandwich has increased by more than two-thirds over the last month, from 2.9% of all Android devices to 4.9% as measured during the 14-day period ending on May 1st. The bulk of Android devices continue to run the year-and-a-half old Gingerbread operating system (64.4%), followed by the two-year old Froyo OS (20.9%). The adoption rate of Android 2.3 is still growing, however devices running Froyo decreased by almost 3%. As more and more manufacturers update their mobile portfolios and as the HTC One X, t...

ICS reaches 2.9 percent of active Android devices, 63.7 percent still on Gingerbread

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

As we check back in on Android's Platform Versions dashboard for the first time since January, we can finally see notable growth in the percentage of devices running some flavor of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, up for 0.6 percent then to 2.9 percent. That's likely fueled by the release of updates for the Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation family of devices, and is a sharp uptick from last month when it registered on 1.6 percent. Gingerbread (2.3) still reigns supreme, running 63.7 percent of the Android hardware that accessed the Play market in the last two weeks, but its growth seems to finally be slowing. Last year at this time that position was filled by Android 2.2, with 2.3 on just...

LG Optimus S to resume Gingerbread update on April 4th

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

Back last September, Sprint started rolling out the Gingerbread update for the LG Optimus S. But the update had to be halted when owners of the device started having some issues. Some owners were having problems recharging their phone or connecting to data. Other problems included the failure of predictive text to appear while typing on the virtual QWERTY, an incorrect message would appear stating that the microSD card is unmounted, and when connected to a PC, the device was unrecognized by Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7

You know how they say – better late than never. That seems to be exactly what LG is thinking when it finally decided to release a Gingerbread update for its Optimus Black smartphone. Not sure why it took them so long, but the good thing is that the new Android version is now available to download. Actually, we’re hearing only users in Europe and India can grab Android 2.3.4, while the rest of the world will have to wait for few more days/weeks (we’re not sure).

Remember when the Dell Streak 5 brought big in a literally big way – with its still perceived to be monstrous sized 5” display? Yes, it has been long discontinued in the US, but nevertheless, it’s getting one snazzy update that no doubt brings some surprise.
Specifically, the official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the original Streak is now available and ready for the taking, thanks to the team over at xda-developers. With the sizable 155MB update, users are required though to have version 350 of the stock recovery installed on the device prior to installation. Once that’s all squared away, you’ll have your Dell Stream 5 transformed completely to an almost new device with Gingerbread.

In a somewhat odd move, T-Mobile has now started another rollout of the OTA updates, seemingly to catch any stragglers left behind. Along with the aforementioned fixes and enhancements of Gingerbread itself, the upgrade also improves the performance of the front-facing camera when using the video sharing app Qik.
