HP's Got a Crazy-slim Laptop Called the Spectre

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG3

It's hard to go back to work after a few days off, but HP is sure coming back with a bang. The company this week leaked a video to Engadget that shows an incredibly thin laptop that's believed to be the newest Envy and the latest notebook to join HP's Ultrabook line. The video itself gives away little in the way of information, however, with CES only a week away, it's likely that HP plans to share more about this device in Las Vegas in just a few day's time.

Samsung Series 5 Ultra up for pre-order in the US, brings optical media to the ultrabook for $949

Koreans won't be the only ones sticking DVDs into exceptionally thin laptops this year: Samsung's Series 5 Ultra laptops are now available for pre-order at J&R. The first time we heard of the aluminum-clad ultrabooks, we didn't have a firm grasp of specs or pricing, but the e-tailer's seemingly spilled all the beans ahead of CES. There are two models, an optical-drive-equipped 14-incher for $949.99 and a 13.3-inch machine for $899.99, but they're otherwise nearly identically specced: both come with a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-2467M processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 500GB hard drive with 16GB of solid state storage cache (increasingly popular these days), a 1366 x 768 display, integrated ...

For whatever reason, we envision the "god of war" being bigger than 15.6 inches, but let's not fault MSI for being excited about its new GT685 gaming laptop and calling it such. With a traditional screen size in tow, the GT685 has the chops to be a desktop replacement, and could even be a desktop killer depending on how it's spec'd out. Let's have a look at what it brings to the table.

Report: Acer and Lenovo to Launch Windows 8 Slates in 2012

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

CES Las Vegas is just around the corner, but, similar to years past, we already know some of the hot items that will be on show in Sin City. Last year, we saw numerous dual-core smartphones and more Android tablets than we care to remember. This year, we're expecting to see Ultrabooks, some quad-core phones and tablets and, hopefully, something Windows 8-related. Considering Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is giving the keynote address, we figure some Windows 8 action isn't completely out of the question, but will he talk about any of the rumored Windows 8 tablets?

Lenovo ThinkPad x130e launch date slips to February

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Lenovo's education-oriented ThinkPad x130e was supposed to launch yesterday, but now the company's website is saying that we should expect the knock-proof tablet to arrive in February next year. Engadget spoke to a rep from the firm and was told that the delay was due to the laptop's popularity with school districts, which have collectively bought the entire first manufacturing run.

The 11.9-inch laptop is designed for use by K12 students, with a rubber bumper on the outer shell to offer some protection from dings and scrapes, reinforced hinges, ports, and bezel corners, a choice of lower-end processors from Intel and AMD, an 8.5-hour battery, and Lenovo's RapidBoot technology to make sure ...

If you like the thin ultrabooks that are starting to hit the market in greater numbers, but want a larger screen keep an eye on Acer. Acer is reportedly set to launch a new ultrabook that packs a 15-inch screen. At the start, Acer was only offering ultrabooks with smaller 11-inch or 13-inch screens. The sales have apparently been good enough that the company is now ready to step into the larger screen market.

The ultrabook with the 15-inch screen is being produced by Pegatron according to a DigiTimes source in the supply chain. Perhaps the best news about the 15-inch ultrabook is that the machine is said to be coming to market for $699 making it a cheaper ultrabook. Many of the ultrabooks ...

Dell Quietly Exits Netbook Market

Posted on Dec 19, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NotebooksDell

Dell entered the netbook market with the Inspiron Mini 9 a little over three years ago, at a time when these small form-factor mobile computers were a hot commodity. Entering the netbook market wasn’t so much a choice as a a necessity back then. But with the halcyon days of netbooks now well behind us, that’s no longer the case. In fact, things have changed so much that Dell has decided to exit the netbook market.
A visit to Dell’s website reveals that the company is no longer selling any of its Inspiron Mini netbooks. Dell had already discontinued the Inspiron Mini 9, Mini 10v, and the Mini 12, and the Mini 10 was the only one that remained. Now that the Mini 10 too has been discontinued, ...

50 Ultrabooks to Debut at CES 2012?

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

I have no doubt that there will be tons of gadgets of all sorts at CES 2012 this year. Among that gear will certainly be hoards of Android tablets. According to Toms Hardware there might be as many as 50 new Ultrabooks breaking cover at the show. Intel had predicted a huge market for the Ultrabook, but it hadn't made a big push.
It looks like CES 2012 might be the big kickoff party for the Ultrabook. There may be 50 new Ultrabooks to check out for the first time at the show. That number comes directly from CEA's Shawn DuBravac who said the CEA expects 30 to 50 Ultrabooks.

Clues in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 suggest new BlackBerry tablet is coming with LTE support

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

According to N4BB, clues found in the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, due out in February, suggest that a new BlackBerry tablet is coming with support for LTE connectivity and a screen resolution of 1280 x 768. The hint that the next RIM produced tablet would have support for LTE came from images found on the BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 OS Developer Beta. Icons were found showing a 4G and a 4G LTE logo. These are the top banner images that you would find alongside other notifications. RIM had been planning for a 4G version of the original PlayBook with Sprint originally saying that it would release a WiMax enabled version until they decided against offering such a device.
