Sony Freshens Up Vaio Series with New Color and Hardware Options

Sony today announced a bit of a Spring refresh for its Vaio Z laptop line, which is really more like a post-CES refresh here in the States where Spring doesn't officially kick off for about another two months. Timing and verbiage aside, Sony's tweaked Vaio Z laptops represent a minor refresh that begins with a new color option -- Carbon Fiber Silver -- and continues with an optional 4G LTE mobile broadband upgrade.
The Carbon Silver SKU joins Carbon Black, Carbon Gold, and Premium Carbon Black (matte) as color options. Inside Vaio Z laptops are upgraded Core i5 and i7 processor options and RAID 0 solid state drives (SSDs). Sony's Vaio Z line is still highlighted by Sony's Power Media Dock dr...

Asus Intros 12.5-inch B23E Ultraportable Laptop for Enterprise Users

Asus is already an ultrabook veteran, having been the first company to unveil an ultrabook. But at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where we saw dozens of new ultrabook models from almost all other major vendors, Asus seemed content with merely announcing two new color options for its existing Zenbook lineup of ultrabooks. That said, the company didn’t announce any new notebook models either. Now that CES is well behind us,though, the company seems to have found the time to launch a new enterprise laptop, the B23E.

The B23E is essentially a 12.5-inch ultraportable targeted at enterprise users. Asus claims that all its B series enterprise notebooks are way bett...

HP Mini 1104 insists the netbook isn’t dead

The netbook isn’t dead, HP reckons, but it is getting marginalized into business and education environments, with the new HP Mini 1104 targeting schools and suits rather than home users. A 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 machine running Intel’s 1.6GHz dual-core Atom N2600 processor with GMA 3600 graphics and up to 2GB of RAM, the Mini 1104 promises durability and performance for those who may be frustrated by text-entry on a tablet.

Asus B23E 12.5-inch laptop, Eee PC R051BX netbook quietly revealed

With just about as little fanfare as possible, Asus has posted information on a new ultraportable laptop, the B23E. Coming in with a 12.5-inch, 1366 x 768 screen, it's available with a variety of configuration options from an Intel Core i3 with a 320GB hard drive on up to a Core i7, 8GB of RAM, and a 750GB/7200rpm drive. Although the 3.4-pound design doesn't inspire, it is arrayed with a decent set of default ports and options, including USB 3.0, HDMI, Express Card, Bluetooth, fingerprint scanner, and an SD card reader. The battery is only a three-cell, 4,400mAh and the 2-megapixel webcam certainly isn't anything special, but they are at least encased in a magnesium-aluminum alloy body. A mi...

BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 to launch February 17th?

Posted on Jan 20, 2012 by MG1

It seems like RIM has been promising to release the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 update forever. Now, a source described by Berry Review as being "solid" is telling the site that RIM is indeed committed to launching the firmware update and says that it will be launched on February 17th. Whether or not the improvements that the update will bring are enough to generate some much needed sales for the tablet are another kettle of fish entirely.
The improvements in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 bring a new e-mail client to the device along with a calendar app and a contacts list that is integrated with LinkedIn. Additionally, some new enhancements have been made to the BlackBerry Bridge. When we show...

Acer chairman JT Wang mentioned late Wednesday that as much as a third of of his company's entire notebook line may be ultrabooks. With Digitimes listening, Wang expected systems like the Aspire S5 and Timeline Ultra to account for 25 to 35 percent of all Acer's notebooks in 2012. The recently unveiled systems would be a foundation of the line and ship in spring, but more models were coming in the summer, the chairman said.

Apple seen selling 4.9 million Macs in holiday quarter

Apple seen selling 4.9 million Macs in holiday quarter

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

Updated US sales estimates from the NPD Group hint that Apple sold about 4.9 million Macs worldwide during the December quarter, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Data is now in for all three months, showing US sales up 12 percent year-over-year. The 4.9 million figure is, however, a lowered forecast on Munster's part -- 300,000 units below a previous target, even if that would still mean global growth of 18 percent.

Toshiba hasn't officially announced the Toshiba Portege M930, but that didn't stop Microsoft showing off the new sliding laptop on its stand at CES over in Las Vegas. The new mystery model sports a similar design to the Asus Eee Pad Slider released last year and the Sony Vaio laptop concept, also on display at the show. While specs are limited we do know a couple of things aside from the rather unusual hinge design that sees the screen face outwards or inwards when closed.

LG Chrome OS device could be in pipeline

Posted on Jan 14, 2012 by MG1

LG’s Chromebook plans have apparently been outed, with Microsoft revealing the company is working on – or at least considering – using Google’s Chrome OS platform to create a cloud-loving notebook. The fast-booting OS was mentioned alongside Android in Microsoft’s triumphant patent announcement earlier, in which the software company said the new agreement covers “LG’s tablets, mobile phones and other consumer devices running the Android or Chrome OS Platform.”

U.S. PC Shipments Down 6% in Q4 2011, Apple Up 21%

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

It appears that PCs are just not the hot gift idea they once were. According to Gartner, U.S. PC shipments were down almost 6% in the fourth quarter of 2011. Apple, however, continues to grow its market share with sales up nearly 21% in the same time. This pushes Apple to the number 3 spot in the U.S. computer market. Still far in the lead are HP and Dell, which have 23% and 22% of the market respectively. Apple’s overall market share is 11%. Lenovo’s sales actually grew by 40%, but it sells so few units in America that it did not figure in the top tier of makers. Apple is the only manufacturer in the top five that grew at all. Apple’s good fortune can be accounted for partially by its retai...

In our roundtable discussion with Sanjay Jha today, Motorola's CEO slipped a couple revelations around its Webtop initiative — the laptop-alternative OS tucked away on many of the company's newer Android phones. As it exists today, the system has been widely panned for its limited capabilities — it's basically desktop Firefox with access to your Android applications — but Jha says that work on the next iteration of Webtop is underway. "Financial, in terms of our take-up rate, it's somewhere in the nine percent range," Jha said, suggesting that less than a tenth of buyers of Webtop-capable Moto devices are actually using it. When asked whether they'll continue using Firefox, he said that they...

Samsung has delivered a streamlined sequel to the original Series 9 notebook in what amounts to a much thinner aluminum unibody package, but also delivering better performance. The new notebook has also been designed to pack in a 15-inch 1600x900 display in a 14-inch chassis. The new Series 9 also weighs just 2.5 pounds and is only half an inch thick.
Samsung claims that the new Series 9 is the result of 33,000 hours in research, design and development. This resulted in the company’s engineers delivering a sequel to the original Series 9 that is 37 percent thinner and 0.4 pounds lighter. All of the components including the LCD panel, keyboard, motherboard, cables, fans and battery were custo...
