Dell XPS 13 touchpad driver update download available now, along with quieter A03 BIOS

Posted on Mar 21, 2012 by MG1

We told you they were coming, and now they're here: Dell's XPS 13 ultrabook received a new set of drivers today that improve the performance of the touchpad. While we'd argue that the single-button Cypress digitizer still isn't perfect — tap-to-click still has a noticeable delay — two-finger scrolling is now smooth and responsive and palm rejection is greatly improved. We weren't able to make the cursor jump a line when typing, although it did move a teensy bit. As we reported last week, the new 2.3.6.33 driver does have its quirks, such as making the touchpad take a moment to respond to input when it's not in use for a while, and for some reason pinch-to-zoom and two-finger rotation gesture...

Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new 15-inch MacBook Air notebook PC in April. The report from Electricpig cites a “premium Mac accessory maker,” who claims a new 15-inch model will feature ports on both sides, with no optical drive or Ethernet port. A 15-inch Air model has been rumored before — DigiTimes previously reported that a 15-inch model was slated to launch in the first quarter of 2012 alongside a new 11-inch and 13-inch model. The Taiwanese publication, however, has also reported that an ultra-thin 15-inch MacBook with Air-like features would launch in the second quarter this year.

LTE and HSPA+ versions of BlackBerry PlayBook pass FCC testing

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

It's hard to say that the BlackBerry PlayBook has been a success by any standard, but it seems that RIM may think that has more to do with the fact that there has only been a WiFi version so far, rather than any problems with the lack of functionality in the original software. Still, the PlayBook 2.0 software fixed most of the issues we had with the software.

Intel Ivy Bridge touchscreen Ultrabook reference design

Interested in replacing both your tablet and that clunky notebook with a svelte all-in-one portable? Intel might have just the gadget for you -- an Ivy Bridge Ultrabook with a built-in 13.3-inch 1600 x 900-pixel capacitive-touch LCD. We happened upon such a device in the bowels of Intel's gaming-centric CeBIT booth, and had a chance to go hands-on with the company's one and only (at this show, at least) reference design touchscreen Ultrabook. The device we saw appeared to be no larger or thicker than similar portables, but integrated a gorgeous 13.3-inch touchscreen, along with that elusive 1.5GHz Ivy Bridge processor. Unfortunately Intel was mum on detailed specs, though the prototype we sa...

Getting top billing are the brand new U2442 ultrabooks and the P2542G gaming laptop. The slim and light model comes in two versions. The U2442V trades in the standard voltage CPUs for ULV ones, while keeping the same 14-inch 1600 x 900 display. They both also offer a GeForce GT 640M GPU with 2GB of memory, up to a 750GB hard drive as well as USB 3.0, Bluetooth 4.0...
