Nokia's Lumia 900 is the best smartphone in the world — in one important usability aspect, anyhow. The DisplayMate labs have been busy collating viewability data on mobile device displays and the results rank the Lumia 900 as the best performer. In particular, the DisplayMate tests were concerned with how devices handle increases in ambient light, a regularly-occurring challenge for anyone wanting to use a phone or a tablet while actually on the move.

Samsung Galaxy S might not get ICS, just a 'Value Pack' instead
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGalaxy SAndroid 4.0
This whole thing with the Samsung Galaxy S and Tab getting the Ice Cream Sandwich update has been a roller coaster to say the least. Remember, Samsung last Friday announced the two devices wouldn’t get the ICS bump, to then only backtrack on it yesterday thanks to scrutiny from the Android community. Now the latest rumor suggest that the Korean manufacturer is cooking up a Value Pack update for the smartphone, which should bring enhancements to make the Android 2.3 platform similar to what you’d get with Ice Cream Sandwich (new widgets, camera improvements, improved web browsing and etc), according to a new report from Korea.

Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab not getting ICS

Just recently, Samsung updated us on its Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update schedule and which devices are getting it and to our great disappointment the Samsung Galaxy S and the 7-inch original Galaxy Tab are not in there. The latest models of the company are, of course, getting the update: the Samsung Galaxy S II, S II LTE, Galaxy R, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. But that’s little consolation for those owning Samsung’s 2010 flagship or Samsung’s first tablet.
Interestingly, the Nexus S, which is very similar to the Galaxy S, is getting ICS. Why is it so then that the Galaxy S is not? Samsung explains that it’s because of a combination of factors: usi...

Samsung sells 30 million units of the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy SGalaxy S II
Samsung’s Galaxy S and Galaxy S II have sold more than 30 million units since first launching at the 2010 Mobile World Congress. To put that into some perspective, that’s happened over a span of 20 months, so that’s an average of 1.5 million units sold every month. The original Samsung Galaxy S was incredibly controversial since it was one of the first devices on the market with a 4 inch screen. Back then that seen as absolutely gigantic. Still, it was a hell of screen to look at. Thanks to the Super AMOLED technology that Samsung used, the colors popped, the blacks were ultra black, and battery life was simply amazing. Just one year later the successor to the Galaxy S was announced, aptly c...

A judge in The Hague just issued a ruling in Apple's patent infringement case against Samsung, prohibiting "the marketing of Samsung smartphones Galaxy S, S II and Ace for violation of Apple Inc. EP 2,058,868." In an official press release, the court explains that The Hague judge ruled to "ban trading of Samsung smartphones Galaxy S, S II and Ace," adding that Samsung also violated other Apple patents with its Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 10.1v, though it's not clear whether or not sales of those devices will be banned as well.

Apple caught resizing Samsung kit again in patent suit

Apple has been accused for the second time of manipulating images presented as part of its patent infringement suit against Samsung, this time for resizing shots of the Galaxy S so that they more closely resemble the iPhone 3G. Whereas Apple’s evidence shows two identically-scaled devices, ComputerWorld points out that in fact the Galaxy S is longer and wider than the iPhone 3G.

Virgin Mobile Canada is issuing an over-the-air update for the HTC Sensation. As far as we know, HTC’s superphone is shipping with the Gingerbread on board, so this gotta be some bug fixing update. It’s not clear what exactly is included in the package, but it’s safe to bet the latest software will make your Sensation run more smoothly than before.
In related news, the carrier also said that the update for its Samsung Galaxy S is on the way, too. However, they haven’t mentioned the exact launch day, only saying it will come “in august.”

T-Mobile UK's Samsung Galaxy S finally gets the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S
I’m not sure why it took so long for T-Mobile UK to finally launch the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the original Samsung Galaxy S. I know carriers like to test firmware updates thoroughly, but I don’t think that’s the excuse. Especially when we know that AT&T’s version of the device (Samsung Captivate) and Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G already got the same treatment. What’s more, we know that the Android 2.3.4 is in works for unlocked Galaxy S.
