Tim Cook on Android patent litigation: 'I highly prefer to settle'

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

It sounds like those court-ordered settlement talks between Apple and Samsung are going pretty well — Tim Cook just told analysts on Apple's Q2 2012 financial call that he's "always hated litigation, and I continue to hate it." The problem, according to Cook, is that Apple "wants people to invent their own stuff," but that "if we could get to some kind of arrangement where we could be assured that that's the case, I highly prefer to settle versus battle."

Apple Q2 2012 earnings: $39.2 billion in revenue, net profit of $11.6 billion

How do you follow up a stunning Q1 where you set record quarterly earnings and issue a sizable dividend to investors? Well, if you're Apple, you just keep on keepin' on, shattering even the wildest expectations with "a record March quarter." Leading up to today's earnings, the outfit's stock was down around two percent, mostly on reports that iPhone activations were something other than mind-blowing. That said, shares have already started to creep back into positive territory in after-hours trading. Wall Street was hoping for around $36.88 billion in revenue (despite lower guidance from Apple itself), with upwards of 30 million iPhones sold and 12 million iPads sold -- galling numbers, no ma...

Approximately one in five Macs are infected with some sort of malware, though much of it is intended for Windows-based machines.
A newer, sneakier variation of the Flashback Trojan that hit more than half a million Macs recently, meanwhile, is now making the rounds, according to separate research.
Security firm Sophos analyzed about 100,000 Macs with the firm's Mac anti-virus software installed, and found that 20 percent were carrying one or more instances of Windows malware. About 2.7 percent were infected with Mac OS X malware.

T-Mobile ICS updates lost on Samsung

T-Mobile ICS updates lost on Samsung

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

It seems that everyone with a Samsung phone or tablet will be getting an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich soon, with some limits, except for basically the entirety of T-Mobile. Sad as it may seem, Samsung’s big list of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades today appears very much to have been relegated to everyone except for T-Mobile. T-Mobile Samsung devices that otherwise might have been upgradable at the moment include the Exhibit II 4G, Galaxy S Blaze 4G, and the Galaxy S II in white and titanium, each of these being suspiciously absent from the updates list.

Google Docs now redirects to Google Drive

Google Docs now redirects to Google Drive

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Google

Today Google finally launched its cloud-storage service Google Drive, and for those who have signed up you'll now find yourself redirected to Drive when you attempt to access Google Docs. This only happens if you're signed up for the new service, and you'll still be able to access all of your documents as before — it's just done through Drive now. The change even removes the "documents" option from Google's navigation bar, which suggests that Google might be rebranding its popular app as part of the new storage service. Of course, it also might cause some confusion for people looking for Google Docs who are unaware of the change. Google is no stranger to major rebranding, as we saw when the ...

Android 4.0.4 factory images hit the web for GSM Galaxy Nexus

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

Sure, pushing builds of Android 4.0.4 out over the air is great, but what if you want to keep that unblemished piece of Ice Cream Sandwich for posterity? You could download the AOSP files, but you'd be missing some vital ingredients from the official factory images. Thankfully, build IMM76I of Google's mobile OS is available to download in a simple archived format. With this release Big G is also introducing a second version of its software. In addition to the standard "yakju," there's now "takju," which includes Google Wallet and the necessary support files. If you're a safety first kind of guy or gal and like to keep a simple factory reset kit handy (you know, just in case that latest CM9 ...

ITC judge finds Apple in violation of Motorola WiFi patent

ITC judge finds Apple in violation of Motorola WiFi patent

Motorola scored a win with the US International Trade Commission this week in its on-going patent battle with Apple. The commission's Judge Thomas Pender ruled that Cupertino is in violation of a Motorola WiFi patent -- one of four patents included in a complaint filed by the RAZR maker back in October 2010. Before the ITC actually goes so far as blocking the import of Apple products, however, the ruling is subject to review by the commission. The decision follows another patent win for Motorola, handed down by the ITC yesterday in a dispute with Microsoft.

Windows 8 Release set with Google Drive

Windows 8 Release set with Google Drive

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

It appears that along with the Windows 8 Release set for early June we’ll likely also be seeing Google Drive sitting on the desktop in app from right out of the box. With Google Drive having its full release party today several weeks before any Microsoft official release of their up and coming operating system, it’s very possible that both companies are allowing this cloud storage initiative bake for a while before deciding if it’s worth integrating with the release of the new Windows software. Information on the possibility of integration comes to us in the anonymous tipster from a source close to the matter.

Firefox 12 now available for download, Windows users get silent updates

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

It doesn't yet include the opt-in system for plug-ins that Mozilla is working on, but Firefox users can now download an update that adds a few other new features and new tools for developers. If you've lost track, that means were now at version 12.0, and the biggest addition this time around is reserved for Windows users -- they'll now get silent updates that bypass the User Account Control prompt. Apart from that, you'll now get line numbers when you view a page's source code, along with a number of other more minor fixes and performance improvements.

Google raises Gmail to 10GB free, 10-times increase since launching in 2004

Eight years ago one gigabyte of online storage was a remarkable thing. One gigabyte of email? Preposterous, but that's exactly what Google offered back in 2004 with the launch of Gmail, and now that factor is increasing. Current Gmail users were floating at around 7.5GB of storage but, as part of all the Google Drive hoopla, that storage is now officially up to 10GB. That's a lot of spam and, for those of us who are already paying extra for more storage, it's even more room to grow before we upgrade to the next tier.

Apple’s chances of winning the iPad trademark battle in China may be slim, according to the remarks of senior official Fu Shuangjian, a deputy director of China’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC). In one of the first public comments made by a government official about the Apple-Proview trademark controversy, Fu sided with Proview saying that the iPad trademark currently belongs to the Shenzhen company.

While we've already gotten glimpses of supposed Samsung Galaxy S III prototypes, this latest one has popped up in a (since removed) post on Chinese forum Mobile01. The plastic rim meant to obscure the device's sleek new design is still present, but as noted by The Verge, the picture appears to show a larger menu button than we're used to on stock ICS. We should find out what the deal is in just a few days, we'll keep our apps and countdown clocks close by until then.

Purported Samsung Galaxy Note for T-Mobile images surface

Samsung's Galaxy Note is currently exclusive to AT&T in the United States, but T-Mobile users that would like to use the device on their network of choice may not have to end up resorting to software hacks after all. TmoNews has a series of photos of what appears to be a branded T-Mobile version of the 5.3-inch device. A look inside the battery compartment reveals a model number of SGH-T879, with the phone also reporting that it is running version 4.0.3 of Android. Several carrier-specific apps are also pictured on the homescreen, including T-Mobile Mail, T-Mobile TV, and My T-Mobile. Of course, these should be taken with a grain of salt until the device becomes official, but it appears that...
