GSMA wants to set up cell-to-WiFi roaming standards
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
It has been a while since we'd heard much from the GSM Association (GSMA), which is an association that represents almost 800 mobile carriers in more than 220 countries around the world. Now, the GSMA has said it is working on creating standards for cell-to-WiFi roaming.
The GSMA has said that it is working with the Wireless Broadband Alliance to make it easier for mobile users to jump onto wireless hotspots and still have full cell service. This plan from the GSMA would possibly adding access to 3rd party hotspots as part of your carrier plan. The main idea is that mobile devices could have an easier way to connect to WiFi hotspots without using the traditional login credentials. So, the G...

Samsung Fined In Korea (Again) For Obstructing Price Fixing Investigation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
When Samsung (among others) was called out for taking part in a mobile price-fixing scheme last week I expected the company to pony up the 14.2 billion won and keep their collective heads down for a while. That would’ve been the smart move: pay up, show remorse, move on, etc.
A few Samsung execs had a different idea though. According to the Korea JoongAng Daily, they instead obstructed an official investigation by the country’s Fair Trade Commission shortly thereafter, which netted the company another 400 million won ($356,000) in fines.
The fine may not sound like much — especially in comparison to the one they were hit with last week — but it’s the largest that the Korean Fair Trade Commis...

Sony VP admits strategic missteps with PlayStation Move
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony
Sony recently announced that it had shipped 10.5 million PlayStation Move controllers — but it kept mum on the number of units actually sold. The company appears to not be too thrilled with the performance of the peripheral, with Sony UK vice-president Fergal Gara admitting to the Official PlayStation Magazine UK that Sony "could have done a much better job" in ensuring that strong Move-enabled gaming titles were available, calling the current crop "not so great" as a whole. While caveating that the Move was better suited to the "casual market," he also stated that Sony has not given up on the device, and that he has "great hope" about what Sony will be able to do with the Move going forward...

Samsung Galaxy S3 to run dual launchers?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
Another week and another Samsung Galaxy S3 photo and spec leak, which this time suggests that Samsung's eagerly anticipated handset will allow users to flip between two versions of the Android operating system.
The image and accompanying leaked details on the Galaxy S3 appeared on the popular social news site Reddit, with the post claiming to have received the information from a Samsung employee.
The post says: "He said that it will possibly have two optional launchers, ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) with TouchWiz overlay and vanilla ICS."
"They (Samsung) aren't 100 percent sure if they will stick with TouchWiz or have the dual launcher option. If they go dual, you will have the option of picking ...

Your contacts data to be safer with OS X Mountain Lion
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMAC OS X 10.8
Apple has released a new version of its OS X Mountain Lion developer preview, which adds a new feature that helps protect a user's contacts book from apps on the computer.
The OS now asks users to grant permission to apps that want to access their contacts book - be it an email client, Skype or some other service. They won't do so until the user says "yes" to data being shared with a third party.
The move has presumably been made in response to the debacle Apple has experienced with iOS apps, such as Path on the iPhone. It, and others, have been raiding iPhone users' address books to then market to a third party.

Confirmed: The A5X inside the new Apple iPad is Samsung made, 45 nm
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Apple and Samsung are fierce competitors when it comes to the smartphone and tablet space, but their relationship, like any other modern relationship, can best be described as “complicated”. Last summer The Economist published a piece that broke down how much the individual components that make up an iPhone actually cost; they also listed who made said parts. The startling conclusion that threw many people aback was that more than 25% of the bill of materials for the Jesus Phone goes to Samsung. Samsung makes the processor, the memory chips, and the RAM inside the iPhone; and starting with the new iPad, they also make the screen as well. That’s easily the most expensive component. Since Appl...

Mozilla caves, will support H.264 to avoid 'irrelevance'
Like UnlikeIt looks like Mozilla is ready to throw in the towel in its battle against the patent-laden H.264 video codec. Over the last week or so, the software foundation has struggled publicly with whether or not to support the MPEG-LA-owned format. Now several of Firefox's biggest players have all come out in support of the move and all that's left is to actually bake the appropriate code into the browser. Both chairman Mitchell Baker and CTO Brendan Eich embraced the decision this weekend, however begrudgingly, in blog posts. Both admit that success in the mobile space requires them to abandon the quest to make WebM the standard for streaming video in HTML5. Even with Google's support, at least on ...

Google’s Motorola deal still awaits China’s approval
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotorolaGoogle
Google’s deal to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion is still waiting for approval by China’s antitrust agency. The deal has already received clearance from the US Justice Department, the European Union, and other jurisdictions around the world, making China the last hurdle. However, Chinese regulators have added another round of investigations, which could bring further delays.
In a regulatory filing made today by Motorola, it was revealed that China’s antitrust agency had extended the second phase of its invesitgations. Google and Motorola still expect the transaction to close within the first half of this year, but they could not provide any assurances that the transaction will be...

Microsoft gaming helmet revealed in patent
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
It wasn’t too long ago that we learned Google were working on special glasses that would bring smartphone like functionality to your eyes. Most notably, Google were aiming to heavily feature augmented reality, overlaying information onto the real world as you wear the glasses. Now a patent reveals that Microsoft may be working on similar concepts: one designed to be a gaming helmet, with another posing as a pair of sunglasses to be used with a smartphone.

Google adds setting to change Gmail toolbar icons back to text
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Gmail's new design is sleeker and more unified, in part because there's so much less text in the interface — the new icon-based pages look sleeker and better. Apparently not everyone was enamored, though, especially users with vision problems who had more trouble distinguishing the Archive and Move icons than they had telling the two words apart. So Google's added a setting in Gmail that lets you switch easily from an icon-based toolbar to a text-based one, easily accessible in the General tab in Gmail settings. Switching to text makes the toolbar larger when you're on a smaller screen, and the page gets a little more crowded, but the toolbar options do become easier to see at a glance.

Panasonic Lumix GF5 accidentally leaked by Hong Kong spokesperson?
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasPanasonicLumix DMC-GF5
Frequent social networkers will tell you that Instagram's usually plastered with food photos and self-portraits, so we were quite surprised to see a product leak over there. After some careful inspection, we're pretty certain that the above picture shows a legit Panasonic Lumix GF5, which from this angle bears much resemblance to the GF3 bar the grip. To add credibility here, the uploader is none other than Hong Kong celebrity Angelababy who happens to be the brand ambassador for Panny (oopsie!). Unsurprisingly, the twee model has already removed the offending picture from her account, but the direct image link still works.

Samsung NX20 leaked photos appear online

A new set of leaked pictures, supposedly showing the Samsung NX20 have appeared online, ahead of what is expected to be an imminent release date.
Samsung was one of the early adopters of mirrorless technology, introducing the APS-C sized NX10 back in January 2010.
However, it has not competed well against rival brands including Panasonic, Olympus, Nikon and Sony, who all stand above it in the league charts.

Google: UK copyright system 'is flawed and limits growth'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google and a whole host of other institutions have put their name behind a letter to the Times newspaper which criticises the UK's current copyright laws and urges the government to embrace all the recommendations set out in the Hargreaves report.
Published in today's Times, the letter has been signed by Dan Cobley, UK marketing director at Google, as well as many more big names – including heads of universities, Father Ted creator Graham Linehan and Dame Lynne Brindley, chief executive of the British Library.
In the letter, the UK's current copyright laws are blamed for stifling innovation and growth in the country and notes that if the laws are changed then the UK will be able to compete i...
