Nokia to announce its first manufacturing plant in Vietnam on April 23rd

Filed in: NOKIA

Over the last few months, Nokia has closed scaled back several of its Western factories and shed over 3,000 employees in a recent effort to cut costs. The Finnish handset maker will shift its manufacturing business to Asia and is planning to build a plant in Vietnam, a move that is expected to cost some $300 million according to Vietnamese news organization BaoMoi. “Shifting device assembly to Asia is targeted at improving our time to market. By working more closely with our suppliers, we believe that we will be able to introduce innovations into the market more quickly and ultimately be more competitive,” Nokia EVP of Markets Niklas Savander previously said. The company will reportedly hold...

Nokia Lumia 900 data connectivity fix available now, three days early

Nokia Lumia 900 data connectivity fix available now, three days early

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Good news came late today for all those Lumia 900 owners out there. It appears that Nokia has officially released the software update to resolve the handset's data connectivity issues -- a full three days early, in fact. Users may download the software through either Zune on the PC or Windows Phone 7 Connector on the Mac. For those who'd prefer to swap out their handset at an AT&T store, you have between now and April 21st to complete the exchange. Naturally, the limited-time offer remains in place for all those who purchase a Lumia 900 before April 21st to receive a $100 credit to their AT&T phone bill, courtesy of Nokia. Quite the graceful recovery, indeed.

Nokia announces 2 million Windows Phone sales in Q1 2012

Posted on Apr 12, 2012 by MG1

Nokia is going to announce their Q1 2012 financial results on April 19th, today though they issued a press release that gives investors and analysts a hint of what sort of numbers they should be expecting. Here are the important figures: 83 million mobile phones were sold during the quarter, of which 71 million were feature phones and 12 million were smartphones. Of those 12 million smartphones, 2 million of them were Windows Phones. Just yesterday we predicted Nokia would sell 2.2 million Windows Phones, so we’re proud to say we were ridiculously close. As for profits … there simply aren’t any. Nokia says their operating margin in Q1 was negative 3%. The bad news doesn’t stop there, the Fin...

Some Nokia Lumia 900 units are having network connection issues

Some Nokia Lumia 900 units are having network connection issues

Posted on Apr 10, 2012 by MG1

So, the Nokia Lumia 900 has landed to much fanfare, and many of the AT&T customers who ordered the smartphone in advance should have already received it. However, a percentage of these pre-ordered units appear to be plagued by a glitch that prevents them from connecting to a data network, be it 2G, 3G, or 4G LTE.
The issue is already being discussed on multiple online communities, including the Nokia Support Discussions and XDA-Developers, and a tipster of ours, who claims to be an AT&T employee, has confirmed that the problem is real indeed. "These devices were mass produced in a plant in mexico and there is a defect with the imei's registering to the data network on 2g, 3g and 4g data", sa...

Walmart Nokia Lumia 900s now shipping

Walmart Nokia Lumia 900s now shipping

Posted on Apr 10, 2012 by MG1

Its pretty annoying when you pre-order a phone and it arrives after it becomes available in stores. While AT&T buyers did not have this problem, and in fact had their handsets 2 days before general availability Amazon handsets only shipped today, suggesting arrival tomorrow.
Good news for buyers at WalMart, where the handset was also selling at extremely low prices, is that their phones are now also on the way, shipping from Texas. Hopefully they will also show up on your doorstep early tomorrow.

Nokia TV service launching in Finland in the coming weeks

Nokia TV service launching in Finland in the coming weeks

Nokia is about to launch its own TV service in Finland, using its backyard as the testbed for the new offering. Touted to create a “free signature hub experience for catch-up TV services,” Nokia TV will be introduced to the Lumia users in the coming weeks, allowing them to browse or search through the available catalogues of catch-up TV services from major local broadcasters and then stream a chosen show directly to their phone. Best of all, sign up and/or registration won’t bre required with the Finnish company relying on the broadcasters’ existing internet TV business models (and user base).

AT&T promotes Nokia Lumia 900 launch with huge signs; phone available in stores today

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

With the Windows Phone flagship Nokia Lumia 900 getting launched on Easter Sunday, the device will actually be first available in AT&T corporate stores on Monday. To let everyone in the States know that the device is available, AT&T has put up some major signage inside its stores. One gentleman told WPCentral that he drove past three of AT&T's corporate stores in Long Island and each had huge Nokia Lumia 900 banners hanging from the ceiling that could be easily spotted from the road. It looks like the tag line for AT&T's campaign will be "Beautifully different".
Inside the stores there will be an area where you can test out the Nokia Lumia 900 and the HTC Titan II. The latter, as we already ...

Dropped your Lumia in water? Nokia tells you how to rescue it

Dropped your Lumia in water? Nokia tells you how to rescue it

Posted on Apr 05, 2012 by MG1

Have you ever sat there, watching transfixed as your phone fell out of your grasp into the nearest source of water (or other liquid)? For smartphone connoisseurs that probably ranks up there with the sickening crunch that comes when your wife’s car backs over something you were sure you placed on the seat.
There’s no way to recover a phone from physical destruction, but occasionally a quick-acting individual can save their phone from a water damage death. Nokia has your back here, and has released a set of instructions for you to follow if you happen to drop a Lumia Windows Phone device into your nearest puddle (it’s probably good advice for any phone…physics doesn’t alter in the presence of...

Nokia is no longer the largest company on the Helsinki Stock Exchange

Nokia is no longer the largest company on the Helsinki Stock Exchange

Posted on Apr 04, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: NOKIA

Apple released the iPhone in 2007. Coincidentally, that was Nokia’s best year on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. Back then they were valued at 110 billion Euros. Today however, Nokia is worth just 16.2 billion Euros according to Helsingin Sanomat, a Finnish publication. That massive loss of value isn’t the real story though, what’s concerning is that Nokia, for the first time ever, has lost their title of being the most valuable company on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. That honor now goes to Fortum, which is an energy company that services the Nordic countries, the Baltic countries, Poland, and parts of Russia.

Alleged Nokia poster template reveals Windows Phone 8 branding

Alleged Nokia poster template reveals Windows Phone 8 branding

Posted on Apr 04, 2012 by MG3

Make of that what you will, but a tipster just sent us a picture, which is claimed to be originating from the confines of Nokia, and allegedly is some sort of a non-final poster template.
Whether real or fake we'll let you decide, we don't know what the pro-printing jargon is for such a seemingly transparent plastic poster sheet, if that's it at all, but what we found most interesting in case this has some merits, is the Windows Phone 8 signage.

Among the cities that will offer LTE from the nation's second largest carrier after next Sunday are Bloomington and Muncie, Indiana, along with Bryan-College Station, Texas. Nokia Maps WebGL Beta gets stereoscopic 3D option

Nokia Maps WebGL Beta gets stereoscopic 3D option

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: NOKIA

Last year, Nokia introduced a version of Nokia Maps that uses WebGL to render advanced graphics instead of a browser plug-in, which meant that it wouldn't require a separate browser plug-in for 3D views. That beta has recently seen a quiet and fun little update: a 3D stereoscopic toggle that gives you a 3D experience if you have the proper glasses to see it. Nokia hasn't said much (or anything, really) about the feature yet, so we don't know if the company has pulled off "true" stereoscopic separation from 3D data — but it certainly seems as though it's doing an accurate job presenting depth and distance based on scrolling around.
