Nokia 808 PureView enables NFC image share, mobile payment apps to come

Nokia 808 PureView enables NFC image share, mobile payment apps to come

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Rounding off a busy day of shooting with Nokia's new imaging mistress, the company's Vesa Jutila, Head of Symbian Product Marketing, hooked us up with some more developments for the 808 PureView, specifically to do with NFC. He told us that picture sharing would be possible across devices -- not limiting itself to fellow PureView smartphones, and differentiating it from another hotly anticipated future smartphone. We'd err against using it on those full 38- or 34-megapixel images though, as they will often measure over 10MB and it could take some time. Further, Nokia's already applied for Mastercard and Visa accreditation to get those mobile wallets up and working. We're curating our own exc...

The future for Nokia PureView: Possible slimmer models and 'not necessarily a 41MP sensor'

The future for Nokia PureView: Possible slimmer models and 'not necessarily a 41MP sensor'

Nokia's 808 PureView may not even be blasting retinas in stores just yet, but that doesn't mean those Finnish cameraphone obsessives aren't already cooking up a buffet of high-megapixel ideas for the future. Vesa Jutila, Head of Product Marketing for the incoming 808 PureView, said that there was plenty more high-spec digital imaging products in the pipeline. While he wasn't about to be drawn on specifics for any future Lumia-Pureview unions just yet, there were "multiple ways" that Nokia could run with its new imaging jewel. Slimmer models are a possibility, still containing high-end Zeiss optics and Nokia's oversampling techniques avoiding the need for optical zoom. He added that the next ...

Nokia World broken up into smaller events, bumped up to September 5-6

Nokia World broken up into smaller events, bumped up to September 5-6

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: NOKIA

We hope you hadn't planned too much of your late summer around the original Nokia World 2012 schedule, because the timetable has just been given a big shakeup. Instead of holding one, monolithic event in late September, Finland's phone giant is splitting the show into smaller, more targeted events. The first will start much earlier than planned, running between September 5th and 6th in Helsinki, but don't expect any big Lumia introductions: the early show is focused on carrier and store partners rather than any opportunities for a public hands-on. Details of more events are coming in the weeks ahead, and some of those gatherings we imagine will be more about new devices than wheeling and dea...

Nokia’s Symbian sales have plunged last quarter significantly, and now Nokia Italy has revealed that Symbian Carla, the third major update after Symbian Anna and Nokia Belle, is cancelled. At least that's what Nokia's Product Marketing Manager Mathias Fiorin has said, according to Nokialino, an Italian Nokia fan site, that allegedly got the info straight from the horse's mouth.

Nokia sells their New York office for $12 million

Nokia sells their New York office for $12 million

Posted on May 18, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Nokia has had an office in White Plains, New York since 2005. Roughly 300 people worked there, and their job was to make the Finnish handset vendor relevant in the United States. They obviously failed to do that, so now the office is being sold to the tune of $12 million. That sounds like a lot, but Nokia invested $30 million into that building to make it look very … Scandinavian. Michael Rao, the guy who helped, Histogenetics, a biotechnology company, buy Nokia’s former offices says: “It’s a great deal for 12 million bucks. The building is gorgeous. It’s so spectacular.”

Nokia 808 Pureview bound for US

Nokia 808 Pureview bound for US

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

Nokia's powerful cameraphone, the 808 PureView, launched this month in countries around the world - but not the U.S.
In fact, Nokia previously stated that they had no plans to bring the Symbian-run 808 Pureview (or any other non-Windows Phone smartphones) stateside in the future.
So it comes as a pleasant surprise that Nokia's U.S. president, Chris Weber, said that the company is trying to "figure out a way" to bring the Pureview to North American shelves.
Weber said that the phone won't be picked up by any specific U.S. carrier, but that it will be AT&T-compatible.

Nokia 808 PureView coming to the US, but don’t ask for carrier subsidy

Nokia 808 PureView coming to the US, but don’t ask for carrier subsidy

Posted on May 11, 2012 by MG1

The 41-megapixel Nokia 808 PureView is a device we can imagine people interested in mobile photography would be eager to get, and after Nokia disappointed us by officially stating in the product page that the phone won’t arrive to the US, now it’s backtracked a bit. The 808 PureView will come to the United States, but it won’t be subsidized by carriers. Rather, it will ship unlocked.
“We’ll figure out a way to make that available in the U.S. in the next couple of months,” Nokia US President Chris Weber said.
That’s already reassuring and nice, but we’re pretty certain that even without Nokia’s help unlocked 808 PureViews would have arrived on interested retailers.

Nokia not worried about LG’s Windows Phone departure

Nokia not worried about LG’s Windows Phone departure

Posted on May 10, 2012 by MG1

Speaking to FierceWireless here, Chris Weber, Nokia’s president for the Americas, said he was not concerned with LG dropping out of the Windows Phone game to focus on Android, saying they were not a major player, and their exit will not have a significant impact.
"I see significant commitment from HTC, Samsung," Weber said. "I actually see increased momentum and commitment form a various set of OEMs on the platform."
He cited the recent announcement of the Samsung Focus 2 as an example of such commitment, saying the $50 handset would benefit the whole ecosystem.

Nokia's Lumia 900 is the best smartphone in the world — in one important usability aspect, anyhow. The DisplayMate labs have been busy collating viewability data on mobile device displays and the results rank the Lumia 900 as the best performer. In particular, the DisplayMate tests were concerned with how devices handle increases in ambient light, a regularly-occurring challenge for anyone wanting to use a phone or a tablet while actually on the move.

Nokia Lumia 610 now on sale in China, unboxed

Posted on May 07, 2012 by MG1

The Nokia Lumia 610 is now on sale in China, and is available for 1,699 Chinese Yuan ($269 USD).
WPDang was one of the first customers and posted some unboxing pictures.
They report the 800 Mhz handset is as smooth and fast as all other Windows Phones, and the phone, which is available in black and white, is polished and “very beautiful”.
One interesting point to note is that the packaging is branded Nokia 610 rather than Nokia Lumia 610, similar to the Nokia 800 and 800c in China.
