Intel: Windows 8 on ARM Is an Uphill Fight
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Windows 8 is stirring up a fair deal of controversy for Microsoft. Now, Intel has come out as saying that it thinks that running the new OS on ARM hardware is going to prove difficult.
During an investor meeting, Intel's CEO Paul Otellini pointed out that the heritage of x86 hardware will make support for Windows 8 far, far more straightforward than ARM-powered devices. He explained:
"I think they have a big uphill fight. We have the advantage of the incumbency, advantage of the legacy support. Not just in terms of applications but devices."

Xbox 360 set for Kinect controlled Internet Explorer browsing
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360
Xbox 360 users will soon be able to surf the web using Kinect gesture controls as Microsoft works on a modified version of Internet Explorer 9.
Currently the Xbox 360’s browsing credentials is restricted to media results via Bing voice search. However, Microsoft is updating its IE browser to enable web surfing direct from the console for the first time.
Kinect gesture controls are also being implemented by Microsoft, meaning users will be able to navigate the web with hand movements as well as their voice. It all sounds very Minority Report.

ZTE Windows Phones coming to the U.S. by year's end
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftZTEWindows Phone 7
ZTE wants to grow its Windows Phone business beyond Europe and Asia, and eventually bring its smartphones to the U.S. We guess they’re talking about the Tania handset, though as far as we know they may have some other products in the pipeline, as well.
At the moment, the Chinese company has a number of low-to-mid range devices on sale across U.S. carriers (some of which are Android-based) and offering a Windows Phone device could prove beneficial for their bottom line. Moreover, with ZTE entering the picture, customers get another option, the one that doesn’t necessarily pulls them into expensive monthly contracts.

Nokia not worried about LG’s Windows Phone departure
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsLGMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
Speaking to FierceWireless here, Chris Weber, Nokia’s president for the Americas, said he was not concerned with LG dropping out of the Windows Phone game to focus on Android, saying they were not a major player, and their exit will not have a significant impact.
"I see significant commitment from HTC, Samsung," Weber said. "I actually see increased momentum and commitment form a various set of OEMs on the platform."
He cited the recent announcement of the Samsung Focus 2 as an example of such commitment, saying the $50 handset would benefit the whole ecosystem.

Microsoft Patents Pressure-Sensitive Controller
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Since Nintendo pushed the envelope, hardware manufacturers seem intent on making new controller types. Now that each of the big gaming companies have at least dabbled with motion controls, biometric feedback seems to be the next big thing. Sony is looking into biometric controllers to measure factors like sweat and heart rate. Not to be outdone, Microsoft is apparently considering a pressure-sensitive controller. The company has registered a US Patent (8,172,675) for a controller with a "pressure-sensitive exterior surface." The patent suggests that device memory could store the output signatures to identify users simply by how they grip the controller. And confirming that these plans relate...

Google raises concerns over browser restrictions in Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleWindows 8
Google has agreed with Mozilla's stance that Microsoft is blocking browser choice in the next-generation Windows platforms. The search giant says that it shares "the concerns Mozilla has raised regarding the Windows 8 environment restricting user choice and innovation." Mozilla's complaint was specifically targeted at the ARM-based Windows RT, and its not clear if Google's mention of "Windows 8" is simply poorly worded or if it has broader issues with the Metro environment. Google's full statement reads:

Now Sprint also likes Windows Phone 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 8
Sprint has not been the best of Windows Phone fans, famously suggesting HTC Arrive buyers should recycle their 6 month old phones for a new iPhone. The HTC Arrive is still their only Windows Phone.
Now Sprint’s director of consumer acquisition, David Owens, has expressed more positive sentiments towards the successor of Windows Phone 7, saying he was "still bullish on Apollo" at the CTIA trade show today.
Back in March there was a rumour of a LTE Windows Phone 8 handset coming to Sprint after the fall, and I guess Sprint will be dipping their toe into the Windows Phone pond once again.

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox 720 may already be in production
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX One
A Texas electronics company has allegedly begun production on Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox gaming console, according to a report from IGN. Production of the Xbox 720 is reportedly underway at the Austin, Texas branch of Flextronics, the same electronics company responsible for manufacturing the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox. Despite these reports, however, Microsoft firmly stated that the next-generation Xbox will not debut at this year’s E3 gaming convention. The hardware currently being manufactured may instead be development kits for top-tier game developers that will get early access to Microsoft’s next-generation hardware in order to prepare new titles. The “Xbox 720″ is rumored to...

Microsoft hires 14 Yahoo researchers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft has hired 14 Yahoo researchers for its brand new New York research lab, AllThingsD reported. The hires come after Yahoo made significant layoffs last month to its research and development unit. According to Jennifer Chayes, who manages Microsoft Research in New England and New York, the researchers were’t hired as a package deal. “I don’t feel like we hired a group; I feel like we hired 15 amazing individuals, some of which became available because there were some problems at Yahoo,” she said. The software giant has an extensive research division that includes some 850 Ph.Ds, and the New York City lab will be the company’s 13th global office.

Microsoft breaks down Windows 8's Media Center upgrade path, Dolby codec support
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Many in the Windows Media Center community were afraid that Windows 8 would mark the end of Media Center, while others thought it would be like Notepad -- present, but unchanged. In the end both were wrong as Microsoft announced Media Center would be available as an add-on to Windows 8. Until now though, we didn't know exactly how that process would work. Steven Sinofsky outlined on the Building Windows 8 blog how users will be able to use Add Features to Windows 8 in Control Panel and purchase the same great Media Center experience that was included in Windows 7 Premium and Pro. The price is still unannounced but is expect to be "in line with marginal costs" -- whatever that means. The pric...

Almost three years later, not all machines have the patch installed, thus leading to the spread of this new hacker tool.

Microsoft revealed today that it plans to open a new research lab in the heart of New York City. An initial team of 15 researchers will assemble in New York where it's expected they will develop new research techniques and be involved in the startup and hack / make communities.
Three key founding members used to work at Yahoo research, and Microsoft appears to have hired as many as 14 of its 15 researchers from Yahoo, following layoffs at the organization recently. A Microsoft Research lab might be new to New York City, but the ...

Microsoft: We’ll hold Motorola accountable for “broken promise”
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft has fired back at Motorola over its German injunction against Windows 7 and the Xbox 360, accusing its rival of a “broken promise” around fair and reasonable patent licensing. Motorola won an injunction against the Microsoft products – as well as Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player – in Germany this morning, over supposed infringement of patents essential to H.264. However, as Microsoft is quick to point out, “Motorola is prohibited from acting on today’s decision.”

Windows Phone Developer Summit kicks off June 20th
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Next month is going be brutal for technology reporters. Apple is holding their annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 11th, Google is holding their annual I/O event on June 27th, and now Microsoft has just announced the Windows Phone Developer Summit, due to kick off on June 20th. It’ll take place in San Francisco, and seeing as how no agenda was provided, we have absolutely no clue what will be talked about. They’ll be developer oriented workshops, that’s a given, but will we be heaing about Windows Phone 8? Codenamed Apollo, the next version of Windows Phone is expected to take things to the next level. Rumor has it that it’s built on the same kernel that Windows 8 uses, so develop...
