Microsoft invests $300 million in new Barnes & Noble 'strategic partnership

Microsoft invests $300 million in new Barnes & Noble 'strategic partnership

Posted on May 02, 2012 by MG1

Well, that's an interesting end to all those legal tussles. Microsoft and bookseller Barnes and Noble have decided to buddy-up in the face of competitors like Amazon and Apple. The strategic partnership -- Microsoft loves 'em -- would come in the form of a new Barnes and Noble subsidiary that deals with all things Nook, in addition to its education business. The bookseller would hold onto the lion's share at 82.4 percent, with the remaining 17.6 percent in Microsoft's control. The first benefit posited would be a Nook app for the incoming Windows 8. Barnes and Noble's Nook Study software would also benefit from a friendly boost on all that Windows hardware. Maybe all those other legal matche...

Apple is 10 years behind Microsoft on security, expert says

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: MicrosoftApple

Apple may be the most valuable company in the world, but when it comes to security, the Cupertino-based company doesn’t hold a candle to Microsoft. Kaspersky Lab co-founder and chief executive Eugene Kaspersky on Wednesday told CBR that Apple is a decade behind Microsoft in terms of computer security. ”I think they are ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security,” Kaspersky said. “For many years I’ve been saying that from a security point of view there is no big difference between Mac and Windows. It’s always been possible to develop Mac malware, but [Flashback] was a bit different. For example it was asking questions about being installed on the system and, using vulnerabilities, it was...

Report: Microsoft revealing Xbox 'Woodstock' music service at E3

Report: Microsoft revealing Xbox 'Woodstock' music service at E3

Posted on Apr 26, 2012 by MG3

We are stardust. We are golden. And we've got to get ourselves back to the Xbox. According to some anonymous-type sources over at The Verge, Microsoft is set to continue its shift away from Zuneland into the world of Woodstock -- that's reportedly the codename of a new Spotify-like service set to make its debut at this year's E3. According to the reports, the tiny yellow bird of a service will work across platforms (think Windows 8, iOS, Android and, of course, the Xbox, amongst others), thanks, at least in part, to browser-based functionality. The service is said to be set to launch later in the year, around the same as some key MS operating systems.

Microsoft planning cross-platform music service to replace Zune

You didn’t think Microsoft was giving up on music after it killed the Zune, did you? Of course not. Microsoft doesn’t give up on anything. Apparently the folks up in Redmond are planning to unveil its latest crack at the music industry at E3 2012, which takes place in June.
Microsoft is preparing a cross-platform music service currently codenamed Woodstock. My guess is it will have something similar to the Zune Pass in which users can subscribe for a monthly fee to download music to their heart’s content. It will be available on all the major desktop and mobile platforms: Windows 8, Mac, iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Xbox will be thrown into that mix too for obvious reasons. Instead of app...

A newer, sneakier variation of the Flashback Trojan that hit more than half a million Macs recently, meanwhile, is now making the rounds, according to separate research.
Security firm Sophos analyzed about 100,000 Macs with the firm's Mac anti-virus software installed, and found that 20 percent were carrying one or more instances of Windows malware. About 2.7 percent were infected with Mac OS X malware.

Windows 8 Release set with Google Drive

Windows 8 Release set with Google Drive

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

It appears that along with the Windows 8 Release set for early June we’ll likely also be seeing Google Drive sitting on the desktop in app from right out of the box. With Google Drive having its full release party today several weeks before any Microsoft official release of their up and coming operating system, it’s very possible that both companies are allowing this cloud storage initiative bake for a while before deciding if it’s worth integrating with the release of the new Windows software. Information on the possibility of integration comes to us in the anonymous tipster from a source close to the matter.

Facebook paying Microsoft $550 million for 650 patents, Ballmer clicks 'like'

Microsoft has agreed to sell on around 650 patents to Facebook in a deal worth $550 million. The Haüs of Zuckerberg will stump up the cash in exchange for various social networking patents that were registered by AOL (disclaimer: Engadget's parent company) and sold to Redmond for $1 billion a fortnight ago. Microsoft will hold onto the remaining 275 in its portfolio and cross-license those that it's sold on, but not the 300 patents that AOL licensed but kept hold of. The social network will likely utilize the portfolio to better defend itself from litigation like the lawsuit brought by Yahoo back in March. If you're interested in reading the phrase "protect Facebook's interests over the long...

Microsoft Xbox 360 found to infringe Motorola patents in preliminary ITC ruling

Microsoft Xbox 360 found to infringe Motorola patents in preliminary ITC ruling

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

A judge at the US International Trade Commission has just ruled that Microsoft's Xbox 360 infringes four of Motorola's patents. The ruling isn't unexpected, since many of the patent cover H.264 video encoding, which is a standard — the ITC wasn't persuaded by Microsoft's argument that Motorola will "kill video on the web" by failing its obligation to license the patents under fair and reasonable terms. In a statement, Microsoft said it "remains confident the Commission will ultimately rule in Microsoft's favor in this case and that Motorola will be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms."
