Google has issued a new report showing that it receives more than 1.2 million takedown requests for search results each month. The chief complainer, by a wide margin, is Microsoft, who claimed a copyright violation on over 500,000 of those infringing search results. But using Google's new transparency tool, which lets anyone sift through the takedown requests, Techdirt discovered that links to pirated Xbox content, which Google took down at Microsoft's request, remain alive and well on Microsoft's Bing search engine.

New images of a Nokia Lumia 800 handset running on wpbench revealed a list of Greek names for what we can only assume are codenames for upcoming Windows Phone-powered Nokia handsets. Shared by the My Nokia Blog, the images came from a user running the Windows Phone 7 benchmark on his Lumia 800. The names include Nokia PureLambda, Nokia Phi, Nokia Pure Phi and Nokia Alpha.

Microsoft: Windows XP costs businesses five times more than Windows 7

While many of us are thinking about the eventual shift to Windows 8, Microsoft is still trying to convince a number of businesses that moving from XP to Windows 7 is the right decision. To help get its point across, the company sponsored a white paper by analyst firm IDC that looks at the costs associated with the two different operating systems — and it turns out the using XP can be quite a bit more expensive for medium-to-large organizations. According to IDC — which interviewed nine different companies as part of the study — the IT and "end user labor" costs associated with XP can be up to five times more compared to using Windows 7.

German court says Motorola violates Microsoft text messaging patent

Microsoft won a small victory in its patent battle with Motorola. A ruling handed down by The Munich Regional Court said Motorola violated a text messaging patent held by Microsoft. The patent describes a method of “communicating multi-part messages between cellular devices using a standardized interface.” Microsoft can enforce a ban on the sale of Motorola Android phones in Germany, but the Redmond company will have to post a 25 million euro ($31.3 million) bond first.

While Dell has previously promised a Windows 8 enterprise tablet "on the exact day" the new operating system debuts, we haven't heard any firm plans for its consumer offerings. Neowin has posted two separate images of what it claims are Dell's two Windows 8 tablets. The XPS 12 is said to be a convertible 12.5-inch tablet (similar to the company's Inspiron Duo) with an edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass display, due in late 2012.

Windows 8 to drop Aero UI for desktop

Microsoft revealed today that Windows 8 will no longer have an Aero-style interface.
In a blog post, Microsoft director of program management Jensen Harris announced the change for Windows 8's desktop interface.
Instead of the Aero-style glass effect that was introduced in Windows Vista, Windows 8 will feature a more flat, neutral colored UI.
As Harris put it, "we have moved beyond Aero Glass - flattening surfaces, removing reflections, and scaling back distracting gradients."
This is a shift from what was being said last year, with the Windows 8 desktop being dubbed "Aero Lite."
And as of March 1, The Windows 8 Consumer Preview also still featured Aero's transparent windows.

Microsoft may have scored a victory against Motorola’s Android phones in the US, but Moto has just landed its own heavy blow. A judge has recommended that the Xbox 360 should be banned in the United States following the discovery that Microsoft has infringed on four of Motorola’s patents relating to H.264 and the use of wireless tech in controllers. Microsoft was found to infringe the patents last month, but the recommendation for the sales ban was issued on Monday.
