Distimo report finds the WP7 Marketplace has passed Blackberry App World

In their look back over the past year, Distimo has confirmed in their monthly report that Marketplace is now the 3rd largest app platform, after iOS and the Android Marketplace, and the 4th largest app store, after the iPhone app store, iPad app store and Android Marketplace.
Blackberry App world takes up the 5th position followed by the Nokia Ovi store.
Of note is that Marketplace showed the biggest growth of over 400% year on year, and that the Marketplace for Windows Mobile never passed 2500 available apps.

ITC judge issues initial ruling that Motorola infringes Microsoft patent

Well, it's a busy holiday week for the International Trade Commission. The agency just announced an initial ruling that Motorola infringed on four claims of Microsoft patent number 6,370,566, which deals with "generating meeting requests and group scheduling from a mobile device," but not the six other patents that were part of last year's ITC complaint. This is an initial ruling by an administrative judge at this point, unlike yesterday's judgement issued by the ITC, which theoretically banned the sale and import of some HTC phones beginning in April 2012.

Okay, Windows Phone handsets may not be perfect when it comes to malware and exploits, but they are definitely safer than their Android counterparts, don't you think? Well, we now know of at least one person in the world who would disagree with that statement, and the disturbing part is that their job expects them to be much more knowledgeable on the matter.
What you see below is an excerpt from a conversation between an Orange service representative and a subscriber. In a nutshell, the unsuspecting user is being misled into believing that Windows Phone devices are prone to getting viruses, while Android smartphones are more or less immune to such problems.

Steve Ballmer's Popularity Within Microsoft Takes a Dive

Glassdoor.com released its "Naughty and Nice" list for IT CEOs and Steve Ballmer is among those whose ratings declined notably during the year.
Steve Ballmer's approval rating among Microsoft declined to 35 percent from 49 percent last year. Only two CEOs in the list are rated worse - Yahoo's Timothy Morse at 31 percent and Xerox' Ursula Burns at 28 percent. The highest rated CEOs are National Instruments' James Truchard, and NetApp's Tome Georgens - both received a 100 percent approval rating. Microsoft announced today that for the first time it would automatically begin updating Windows users to the most recent browser version supported by their OS (IE8 for XP, IE 9 for everyone else) - in the past, IE has been offered as an optional or recommended update, and users have been given the opportunity to opt out before installing. Microsoft Epiphany: Silent Updates are Great, Coming to IE in January

Starting next month, Microsoft will begin automatically upgrading some Windows users to the latest version of Internet Explorer available for their PCs, the Redmond software juggernaut announced in a blog post today. These silent updates are deemed an "important step in helping to move the Web forward," though consider this a trial run.
The silent updates will kick off in January for customers in Australia and Brazil only, and branch out to other markets over time. Microsoft didn't say when it plans to flip the automatic update switch specifically for Windows users living in the U.S.

2D barcodes may be everybody's favorite technology that nobody really uses, but Microsoft is suggesting a solution: avoid fragmentation by supporting all possible formats with Microsoft Tag. The company is adding both traditional QR codes and NFC communications to its system, which previously only used the proprietary Tag format. Vendors and brands can now create QR codes and NFC URLs with Microsoft's Tag Manager, while the company positions its updated mobile Tag app as the one barcode reader to rule them all. PC users have been using Windows Defender to free themselves from the bane of viruses, malware and spyware for quite a while, but until now, you've needed Microsoft's OS running for it to do its work. That changes with a new beta, which creates bootable CDs or USB sticks that can run the utility. Those interested can begin by downloading the Windows Defender Offline Tool, which'll prompt you for either of those mediums and then install around 300MB of virus hating bits. And remember, because you're statically downloading an almanac of today's viruses, doesn't mean you'll be ready for those tomorrow, so those taking the plunge better remember to stay up to date.

Microsoft Silverlight 5 released, will it be the final version?

Yesterday, Microsoft released Silverlight 5, available on IE, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari on both Mac and PC. The update adds hardware decoding for H.264 media, some new programming features for developers, and other performance improvements. Silverlight 5 may also be the end of the line for Silverlight. Windows 8 will support Silverlight 5 in full desktop mode, but the Metro-style browser will not and neither does Windows Phone.
More to the point, while Microsoft plans on supporting Silverlight 5 for ten years (which in itself may be a sign that it won't have a followup), the company is clearly more interested in directing developers to other frameworks for development, including Metro apps...

Apple’s success is evident recently, but unlike most other phone and PC makers, Cupertino is not participating in any of the major electronics shows like CES, MWC and CTIA. Now, we don’t consider this as good practice but the company has definitely built a name for itself and its zealous army of followers, so it has the attention and can afford this. Now, it seems its biggest PC rival Microsoft has decided to start following that example. At least, that’s what Mary Jo Foley of the Windows Weekly podcast got as an inside scoop.

Microsoft is set to roll out a new dashboard update for its Xbox 360 console tomorrow that places a greater emphasis on its media center capabilities rather than just gaming.
