Microsoft ends support for Windows Vista SP1
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Vista
Microsoft has ended official support of Windows Vista Service Pack 1, with the software giant steadily ramping up the pressure on consumers and businesses to move to its Windows 7 OS.
With the call to leave XP still ringing in our ears, Microsoft has now reminded us that its support for Vista SP1 is now at an end.
In a blog post by Brandon Le Blanc, customers are urged to move on to Windows 7 or, at least, upgrade to Vista SP2.

Nokia to spend $127 million this October promoting Windows Phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
A little over 5 months ago, at an investor relations meeting in London, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop got on stage and announced that the Finnish handset maker has essentially given up on Symbian, is going to halt development on MeeGo, and will switch their smartphone operating system of choice to Microsoft’s Windows Phone. Since then the stock has tanked, twice, the second dip caused by issuing a revised outlook to their Q2 2011 financial results that says the handset maker will break even … barely. The question on everyone’s mind since that day in February is when exactly are we going to see the first Nokia Windows Phone? And no, we’re not talking about the recent leak that showed Elop giving a d...

Microsoft: 400 million Windows 7 licenses sold in 21 months
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 7
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has announced that Windows 7 has sold more than 400 million licenses so far, meaning it is still the fastest-selling operating system. Ballmer revealed the number at the Microsoft's annual Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC), a four-day event that celebrates the accomplishments of the company's 640,000 global partners. Windows 7 has been available to the masses for 21 months.
Windows 7 actually grabbed 20 percent of the market at the end of 2010. Between January and December 2010, Windows XP fell almost 10 percentage points to 56.72 percent market share, Windows Vista lost over five percentage points to 12.11 percent, and Windows 7 gained over 13 percentage points,...

Windows 8 to have the same system requirements as Windows 7
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 7Windows 8
Did you recently buy a new PC with Windows 7 on it? Are you interested in Windows 8? Are you worried you won't be able to upgrade your operating system? If you answered yes to all three, we have good news for you. Microsoft says Windows 8's system requirements will be the same, or perhaps even lower, than Windows 7's.
Tami Reller, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Windows division, revealed the tidbit to attendees at the company's Worldwide Partner Conference 2011, which took place yesterday in Los Angeles, California. She said any PC capable of running Windows 7 today would be capable of running Windows 8 when it is released.
"The breadth of hardware choice is unique to Windows and is...

Xbox 360 pops up in Win 8 code, console game compatibility coming to the PC?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesOperating SystemsMicrosoftXBOX 360Windows 8
It's no secret that Microsoft is planning on integrating Xbox LIVE into Windows 8, but rumors are now swirling that Xbox 360 games might actually be playable on the next version of Redmond's OS. References to "XBOX_360_SYSTEM_CRASH" have been found in the kernel code -- an odd bit of text to show up in software that's not designed to run on the 360's PowerPC CPU. There are, of course, other, more mundane possibilities -- like the ability to remotely control your console to trigger update and game downloads, or to receive notifications from the machine on your desktop. But, if Microsoft is bringing Xbox titles to the PC, it would only serve to solidify Windows as the platform of choice gamers...

Microsoft Talks Up Windows Sales, and "Very Small" Windows Phone 7 Sales
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Ballmer knows the fastest way to get people talking about Microsoft is if he slags off the competition, which is exactly what he did yesterday. Boasting, he compared 350m sold PCs in the last year with their rival selling just 20m.
That rival being Apple, we can only presume, with TNW looking into sales data and figuring that Mac sales amounted to 15.25m—some way off what Ballmer quoted, but near enough that it must be them—maybe with a hit of Linux, too.
Whichever rival it is Ballmer referred to, he claimed it was "too much" and that Microsoft wishes to scoop up those 20m customers with the caressing touch of the Windows hand. This by no means is the first time green-eyed Ballmer's spoken o...

Microsoft teases a WP7 version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, plus new handsets from Fujitsu, ZTE and Acer

Microsoft's WPC 2011 conference which we reported from yesterday is in full swing, and special time was dedicated to Windows Phone, with Redmond showing off not one or two, but four new WP handsets. While it didn't specify many details about the phones themselves, Microsoft reiterated that we will have three new manufacturers jumping on the bandwagon - Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE.
But there were actually four handsets on stage, with the fourth being none other but the Windows Phone version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, one of the best handsets money can currently buy. Samsung's phone, as well as all others that were present during the keynote, seemed to have the good ol' front-facing camera, which i...

Microsoft shows off Windows 8 tablet concept
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft on Tuesday showed off a concept tablet running an early version of its next-generation Windows 8 operating system during a Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference presentation. The company briefly showed off the mysterious tablet, which touted a user interface that looks very similar to the tech giant’s mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7. Windows Phone 7 itself will never find its way to a tablet, however, as Windows Phone boss Andy Lees stated during the show that a tablet should be able to do everything a PC can do. Microsoft’s approach with Windows 8 tablets is very different from Apple’s tablet strategy, which offers a limited experience — albeit one that has been very suc...

Microsoft Windows 7 license sales reach 400 million
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 7
During his Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference keynote on Monday, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that the company has now sold 400 million Windows 7 licenses to date. Microsoft’s current operating system was first launched in October 2009, and it was welcomed with open arms as customers were eager to dump Vista following its troubled introduction. Despite an impressive 20 months for Windows 7, it is still far from being the world’s most used operating system. Windows XP’s share was near double Windows 7′s in June, though Microsoft did confirm on Monday that it would stop supporting the operating system 1,000 days from now. According to Net Applications, Microsoft’s Windows 7 operat...

Ballmer talks up "dawning" of Windows tablets, as Windows 7 continues to sell well
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 7
Ballmer has said that Windows 8, the company’s next version of its operating system will be the “dawning of Windows slates,” at the company’s annual Worldwide Partners Conference.
Taking to the stage to talk all things Microsoft, including admitting that Windows Phone 7 sales are still small, the CEO said of the new OS:
"Windows 8 really does represent a true re-imagining of Windows PCs and the dawning of Windows slates."
But it’s not all future, future, future. Ballmer also used the conference to also confirm that the company had sold over 400 million Windows 7 licences around the world, and find time to take a pop at Apple and Linux:
"We're selling a lot of Windows and we've got a lot of c...

According to Best buy, Windows Phone 7 looks like Windows, syncs documents
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
We know Microsoft’s retail partners have not been doing the best job selling Windows Phone 7, but when they are trying to be informative and still get it wrong, it is no wonder their sales people get it so wrong.
Such is certainly the case with Best Buy. From their website describing the various mobile operating systems, Best Buy says:
Windows Mobile and Windows Phone 7
Of the different smartphone platforms, the Windows Mobile line has undergone the most changes. In its earliest configuration as Pocket PC 2000, the OS was originally designed to work as a PDA platform. In 2003, Windows Mobile was released and quickly found a home as an enterprise smartphone platform due to its tight integrati...

Microsoft CES 2012 keynote to include public Windows 8 beta
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft's CES 2012 keynote has not only been narrowed down but may give the first publicly available copy of Windows 8, both official and unofficial sources said Wednesday. CEO Steve Ballmer was confirmed to be taking the stage on the evening of January 9, unusually at Las Vegas' The Venetian hotel and not the usual Hilton Center venue. The executive has traditionally given the CES keynote.
Tips to WinRumors, however, suggest that the focus will be almost exclusively on Windows 8. The company is expected to show the first and possibly only test version of Windows 8 available to the general public. Ballmer is also expected to focus heavily on rivalling the iPad and to demo prototypes of ARM...

WP7 Mango to include Battery Saver setting
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Anyone with a touchscreen smartphone knows that battery life is something you have to constantly keep an eye on. Regardless of the model of phone, or OS you may be running, chances are that at some point or another you've looked into ways to make your battery last longer, even if it's just a matter of carrying a charging cable with you at all times. As smartphones get more powerful, and users can do more, battery life will keep taking more hits. Microsoft sees this, and has built Batter Saver settings into Windows Phone 7 Mango.
If you're an Android user, you know that there are dozens if not hundreds of apps dedicated to squeezing more juice out of your battery. Most include turning off ce...

Microsoft Wants $15 from Samsung For Each Android Phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSamsungMicrosoftGoogleAndroid
Microsoft has demanded that Samsung pay it $15 in licensing fees for each Android-based smartphone that it sells. Microsoft owns a number of patented technologies used in Google's mobile operating system, and has been seeking fees from Android handset makers. HTC and other phone makers have reached agreements with Microsoft over the patented technology. Reuters reports that Samsung will push to reduce the per-handset charge to $10 in conjunction with new agreements regarding Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform. Samsung has sold millions of smartphones based on Android.

Microsoft demands $15 for every Samsung-made Android smartphone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSamsungMicrosoftGoogleAndroid
Taking the highly competitive smartphone market into perspective, one would assume that Android's steady growth would be a bad thing for Microsoft and its Windows Phone platform. However, this may not be necessarily true as the company is actually raking in some big money from other manufacturers' Android-powered devices.
HTC, for example, has to pay royalties to Microsoft for each Android device sold due to the fact that the latter holds a number of patents involved in Google's platform. However, the $5 per device sold, which Microsoft is getting from HTC, seem nothing compared to the $15 per device that the maker of Windows Mobile has just demanded from Samsung.
If we take only the Samsung...
