Microsoft Mobile Operating Systems continue to lose Market Share in USA

Comscore has released their monthly market share numbers, and confirms the recent Nielsen research showing Windows Phone 7 is not growing in USA.
They reveal 76.8 million people in USA own smartphones, up 11% from 3 months earlier, and Microsoft’s share of that installed base continues to drop rapidly, now sitting at 5.8% or 4.45 million users. This is down 0.9% from 6.7% the previous month.
The effect is likely due to the lack of new Windows Phone 7 handsets being released into the market regularly, unlike on Android, something which will not be as much of an issue next year, when handsets will be released throughout the year rather than in a single wave.

While Nokia busily beavers away on its first batch of Windows Phone 7 devices, it is also working hard to make sure that its app store integrates seamlessly into the OS' ecosystem.
Speaking with TechRadar, Nokia's Senior Vice President of Developer and Marketplace, Marco Argenti explained that Nokia is determined to avoid fragmenting the ecosystem with apps that are incompatible with other manufacturers' handsets

Marketplace has just hit another major milestone, crossing the 25,000 app mark in just 8 months and 10 days. It took the Android market considerably longer at more than 15 months after launch to cross the same mark, and took only 4 days longer than the iPhone app store
Leaving aside the concerns about the flood of spam apps, it is still agreat achievement and a sign of confidence in the Windows Phone 7 ecosystem.

On the WP7Dev Podcast Cliff Simpkins, Product Manager for WP7 at Microsoft, has made it clear the earlier restrictions developers faced on sharing information on Mango has now been lifted.
The situation has rapidly evolved from no information at all (“… the developer promises not to publish any content, screen shots or comments in any media…”) to some posting allowed, as long as its cleared by Microsoft (Permission to publish content, screenshots or comments based on this pre-release code can be obtained from Microsoft on a case-by-case basis) to the final climb down now.

The Windows Phone Facebook app has just received a major update to include push notifications.
The updated Windows Phone Facebook app will now include push notifications for actions like messages, feed comments, photo tags, photo comments, tagged photo comments and more. The major advantage of the push notification is that you don’t have to dive into the app to know when things are going on.
Microsoft’s smartphone platform already had deep integration with this social network, as your Facebook contact info can be pulled in to your contacts lists. I still see the need for a standalone app for the social network though and it’s good to see it continue to receive improvements.

Velocity Micro made to sign Microsoft patent deal on Android

Velocity Micro on Wednesday was the second in as many days to be pushed into signing a patent deal with Microsoft over Android. The deal will see royalties paid on every Cruz tablet sold. Company chief Randy Copeland spun the loss by arguing that it would help lead to "exciting new Cruz tablets" later on.
The deal immediately follows one with General Dynamics and shows Microsoft now turning most of its attention to smaller Android device makers located inside the US. Most of its early focus on royalty collection was on larger phone designers like HTC.

Microsoft collects licensing fees from two small Android manufacturers

Two small Android OEMs, Velocity Micro and General Dynamics, each cut a check payable to the order of Microsoft to take care of licensing fees that allow the pair to use the Android OS. Even though Android is considered Google's baby-and rightly so-the gang at Redmond still have some patents involved in the software which the company feels it should be paid for to license to users. The amount of the payments to Microsoft has not been disclosed.

Microsoft delivers Mango for Developers early

In a blog post on the Windows Team Blog Brandon Watson announced the new Beta 2 of the Mango developer tools and also the avialability of a beta ROM for retail devices running Mango.
Microsoft is also making 50 developer phones available for student developers registered with DreamSpark if they have a compelling enough mock-up of their application created using Sketchflow.

Kik sends passwords and messages without encryption

Kik, the popular and free messaging service which has just arrived on Windows Phone 7 is a great service that works very well.
Raphael Riviera from WithinWindows has however analysed the data flowing from the app to the internet and discovered the software sends everything, including passwords and messages in plain text.
This means when you are on WIFI at work or cafe for example, anyone with a network analyser on the same network will be able to see your messages, get your full name, user name, email address, password and possibly even impersonate you.
This is a apparently a flaw which has been in existence for at least a year, suggesting the company does not really care about security.

Is the full-screen touch interface for Windows 8 'just a shell' on top of Windows?
Not really; there isn't an application running like Media Center that you could shut down and it isn't just a browser – this is another mode for the interface that you can switch in and out of. But it is the browser that powers it.
Apps for the immersive Windows 8 interface are written in HTML5, JavaScript and CSS (and presumably, Silverlight – this is the IE10 engine and there's no reason for it not to run plug-ins) and packaged up in an AppX container.
