Microsoft renews alliance with SUSE, throws $100 million in pocket change at Linux

Microsoft renews alliance with SUSE, throws $100 million in pocket change at Linux

Posted on Jul 27, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft and Linux haven't always had the friendliest of rapports but, a few years back, the folks at Redmond decided to cozy up to Novell and the enterprise-focused distro SUSE. The German arm of the company even wished Tux a happy 20th birthday last week, in an attempt to further thaw their notoriously chilly relationship. Now the Windows crew have decided to renew their partnership with SUSE and have committed to purchasing $100 million in technical support for Microsoft Enterprise customers who also happen to be running Linux boxes as part of their operations. It's not about to stop claiming that the open source OS violates several of its patents, but at least they've learned to get alo...

Windows Phone 7 Mango finished as Microsoft tries again

Windows Phone 7 Mango finished as Microsoft tries again

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft has quietly finished Windows Phone 7's major Mango update, according to details in an episode of the Windows Phone Dev Podcast. Build 7710 has been released to manufacturing, which will make it the version the first shipping phones use. The company has already said it will take app submissions on August 22, likely a sign the OS will be on shipping devices soon afterwards.
The company is suspected of stepping up the release schedule to avoid a repeat of last year, where original Windows Phone 7 devices only arrived in November. Fujitsu is rumored shipping the first Japanese WP7 phone as soon as August. Nokia's Sea Ray prototype was caught using a final build and is also expected bef...

Microsoft has yet to launch its tablet-optimized operating system and yet slates running various versions of the Windows operating system still managed to outsell Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook last quarter. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics’ latest report, Windows-powered media tablets owned 4.6% of the global market in the second quarter of 2011. In the same period, RIM’s PlayBook made up just 3.3% of the market. The firm also shows that competition may finally be heating up in the tablet space. Apple, which owned more than 94% of the market in the second quarter last year, saw the iPad’s share slide to 61.3% according to Strategy Analytics. Over the same perio...

ChevronWP7 Labs to unlock your Windows Phone 7 handset for $9, hackers not welcome

ChevronWP7 Labs to unlock your Windows Phone 7 handset for $9, hackers not welcome

Posted on Jul 20, 2011 by MG1

Need a little extra unlocked WP7 incentive to keep you from buying those oh-so-distracting iOS and Android devices? Well, that official homebrew love is going to cost you -- $9 to be exact. We already knew the Microsoft-sanctioned ChevronWP7 Labs would be open for business soon, but recent tweets from the jailbreaking outfit's Chris Walsh have shed a little more light on the process. In addition to the nominal fee users will have to fork over for the official unlock, Walsh also points out that software updates to Mango and Nodo will close any security holes in the platform. So, if you were planning on getting your pirate-y hands dirty hacking away at WP7, think again -- Microsoft's still got...

Windows Phone 7.5 to arrive as soon as next month?

Windows Phone 7.5 to arrive as soon as next month?

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft's latest update to its Windows Phone OS, codenamed Mango, may arrive sooner than many were expecting. Fujitsu will offer the very first Mango device, a waterproof phone called the IS12T, on KDDI as early as late next month, according to the Japanese publication Nikkei.
The phone will go for somewhere between 30,000 and 40,000 yen ($380 and $500), which is not that much given it will probably be a higher-end device. Of course, we won't know if that's really a good deal until we see all the Mango phones from Microsoft's various partners, a list which keeps growing.
Last week, Microsoft showed off four unannounced Windows phones from Acer, ZTE, Fujitsu, and Samsung. Nokia, which agree...

New Xbox to be Windows 8 powered?

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft's Andy Lees has pointed to a unified ecosystem for all of the companies' devices, including Xbox, PC and phones.
Lees was speaking at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference when he said: "We are aiming to provide coherence and consistency across the PC, the phone, and the TV - particularly with Xbox,"

"That's through providing new types of scenarios - things like the way in which you make the user experience more common, as you saw yesterday in the demontration of the user experience you have on Windows 8, on Windows Phone, and also on Xbox - but also sharing key pieces of technology." he added.
It looks like Lees is suggesting that the future of Xbox could be in Windows 8 fo...

Windows Phone Mango likely to be ready in September, Microsoft aims for 100 million annual sales

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG3

The winners in the Microsoft-sponsored Imagine Cup contest this year will receive Windows Phone Mango handsets in September, as we learn from the competition's Twitter account.
That probably means that by fall availability Microsoft means early fall, which is good news for current and future owners of WP7 handsets. We wold bet on future owners who get the handsets around that time, however - current owners might have to wait more, as usually happens with these updates, but let's not put the cart before the horse.

Windows Phone 7 Connector now puts your Home Server in your hand

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG3

Ok, Windows Server Solutions Phone Connector doesn't exactly sound exciting but, if you're one of the few people out there rocking a Windows Home Server 2011 machine and a WP7 handset, you're probably gonna want to get this set up ASAP. The combination of server-side plug-in and phone app lets you remotely control your server -- triggering backups, managing users, and viewing alerts. It also lets you pull up media files stored on your server, though you can't copy them locally for your later viewing or listening pleasure. It's not just for home users either. The plug-in works with Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials, for smaller compani...

Windows 8 Will Have Same System Reqs as Win 7

Windows 8 Will Have Same System Reqs as Win 7

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG3

The jump in system requirements going from Windows XP to Windows Vista was significant. The move from Windows 7 to Windows Vista, however, wasn't anything of the sort. In fact, Windows 7 ran better than Windows Vista on modest systems.
Even though Windows 8 isn't set for release until 2012 at the soonest, Microsoft is targeting a similar set of minimum system requirements as the ones for Windows 7. By extension, this would mean that Windows 8 will have similar hardware requirements as Windows Vista – an operating system that could predate Windows 8 by three years.

Microsoft hit with lawsuit over Windows Phone 'Really' ads

Microsoft hit with lawsuit over Windows Phone 'Really' ads

Posted on Jul 15, 2011 by MG1

A company called Cellrderm has taken Microsoft to court over its Windows Phone “Really” advertisements, according to Adweek. Cellrderm, a gag company that creates commercials for a fake Cellrderm “cell abuse aid” product, argues that it owns the copyrights to the creative content used in Microsoft’s ads and that Microsoft copied its work in its “Bedroom” and “Bathroom” commercials. You’ve probably seen the ads on TV: in one, a man is too busy on his phone to pay attention to his wife in the bedroom. In another, an executive drops his phone in the urinal and reaches to pick it up. “The Microsoft commercials copy both the sequence of events and the character interplay found in the Cellrderm co...

Microsoft is aiming for 100 million Windows Phones per year

Microsoft is aiming for 100 million Windows Phones per year

Posted on Jul 15, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft’s chief operating officer Kevin Turner told WPC 11 attendees that Microsoft hoped to ship 100 million Windows Phone units each year on the back of its deal with Nokia.
"We have to do some very strategic things to get our mobile phone volume up," Turner said.
Turner said Microsoft’s plan was to win by making “big bets” including Windows Phone 7.
Possibly to help this goal Microsoft intended to build 75 more stores around USA to push their products, probably a good idea given the negative spin phone retailers currently give to Windows Phone 7 handsets, despite high customer satisfaction rates.

Windows 8 Leaked CD Appeared for Sale on eBay

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Many people want to be the first to use a shiny new piece of software, which could explain why one person tried to sell an early build of Windows 8.
An auction appeared on eBay offering a “real Windows 8 Milestone 3 leaked CD.” It's unknown if this disc was an official Microsoft pressing, but copies of Windows 8 Milestone 3 have been available off file sharing sites for some time now.
The auction has likely since caught the attention of Microsoft, which probably explains why the listing was pulled. According to WinRumors, the auction listing had a price of $1,500.
For those who really want to try out Windows 8, but to abide by Microsoft's rules, there's been rumors that Microsoft will releas...
