European courts uphold Microsoft fine
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
If you have been following the tech world for a while, you may remember years back when courts in the European Union hit Microsoft with a gigantic fine of €899m. That fine was levied against Microsoft after the software giant failed to pay an original fine of $1.2 billion for overcharging customers to make servers interoperable.
Microsoft has always maintained that it wasn’t given enough time to mount an appeal and had never been informed of what was considered a reasonable rate to charge its competitors for interoperability. That claim didn’t sit well with EU courts. Microsoft appealed the massive fine, and this week the software giant lost that appeal.

HP releases webOS Community Edition for TouchPads
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
It was a few months ago when we got word of HP’s plans to release something called a “Community Edition” as an added part to webOS 3.0.5. Now, webOS Community Edition has been released for use on legacy TouchPad tablets. Users will be able to learn how the TouchPad works, make modifications and then eventually apply what they’ve learned to Open webOS 1.0 in the future.
Although the webOS team worked closely alongside the WebOS Internals to release webOS Community Edition, it’s not the same as Open webOS. The release of Open webOS 1.0 is expected to be released in September and will offer developers the ability to port webOS to their own devices and make use of open source technology integrat...

Facebook privacy: App exposes Facebook status updates left public
Like UnlikeFacebook’s repeated privacy snafus always make the news and cause a stir among users, but a surprising number of Facebook members throw caution to the wind when it comes to online privacy. As noted by Digital Trends, a new website dubbed “We Know What You’re Doing” uses Facebook’s Graph API to collect public status updates that likely shouldn’t be made public, and then displays them for all the world to see.

Google announces tablet version of Google+
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google today announced a tablet-specific version of its Google+ social network. Among other things the new tablet applications will feature Hangouts that automatically switch cameras based on which person in the Hangout is talking. The new app will be available on both the Apple iPad and Android-based tablets. Google+ also now features an Events feature that integrates with Google Calendar and acts as the social networking site’s version of Evite that lets users set up and invite people to parties and other events. Google+ Events also features a “party mode” that automatically adds all photos taken to the party by any Google+ users who have “party mode” flipped on. “Party mode” also makes a ...

Google Chrome Android released: Google Play store
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
Google is trying to end the debate over which mobile browser works best for Android by releasing the mobile version of its popular Chrome browser to the Google Play store on Wednesday. The Android version of the browser had been in Beta until Wednesday and is currently only available for devices that have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. Google says that the latest version “picks up important stability and performance fixes since the last Beta, along with some minor UI adjustments, especially for tablets.” Key features in Chrome for Android include the ability to sync open tabs, bookmarks and passwords from users’ desktop browser to their smartphone or tablet; the ability to send op...

Is the Nexus 7 the only tablet in Google's plans?
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsGoogleNexus 7
This here is pure speculation, so we absolutely don't mind if you disagree with what you are about to read. Now that we've made that clear, let us present you with our (wild) hypothesis.
It is just that there is something about the Google Nexus 7 and its name. Think about it: it could have been named something else like the Google Nexus Tab, Google Nexus Slate, Google Nexus butter-on-toast, but no. We simply have a figure representing the device's display size. Why have a "7" at the end instead of some elegant moniker since there is no other Nexus tablet to confuse this one with?

CyanogenMod 9 RC1 brings near-final Android 4.0 ROM to 37 devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
The development team behind the popular CyanogenMod Android firmware is making the first wave of release candidates available for its Android 4.0 ROM, CyanogenMod 9. The list contains 37 devices, including older phones like the Nexus S, non-Android devices like the HP Touchpad, and newer phones like the international Galaxy S III —although there isn't yet an RC1 download for the HTC One X. From this point, the ROMs will enter the nightly build stage as developers work their way toward gold releases — more or less final versions.
If your device isn’t on the list, that doesn’t mean CM9 isn’t coming. A post on the CyanogenMod blog notes that since the ‘core’ OS is now stabilized, people will be...

Google pays out $11,500 in bug bounty for Chrome 20
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google has paid out $11,500 in bounty money to security researchers for spotting bugs in the latest stable version of its Chrome web browser, released yesterday. $7,000 goes to a single developer, named "miaubiz", who discovered seven separate bugs, including several problems with the browser's handling of SVG images. A further $4,000 goes to Jüri Aedla, who spotted two integer overflows, one threatening more than just the browser, potentially allowing an attacker to affect the underlying system on 64-bit Linux machines. Meanwhile, Nicholas Gregoire picks up a modest $500 for spotting a "wild read in XSL handling."

Bill Gates: tablets in the classroom have a 'terrible track record'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Among other things, Apple's iBooks 2 initiative is designed to put modern digital textbooks into schools, and some studies have found that the tablet can be a positive learning tool. However, not everyone's convinced — Bill Gates, for example. In an in-depth interview with the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Microsoft co-founder said that the future of education requires a lot more than simply providing people with new ways to read.

Facing Extradition, Megaupload's Kim Dotcom Hosts Pool Party
Like UnlikeLooks like somebody's not letting a little something called house arrest get him down.
Megaupload boss Kim Dotcom, who is wanted by U.S. authorities on a slew of copyright infringement and fraud charges, over the weekend invited a Twitter follower to his New Zealand mansion for a pool party. It all started when Dotcom posted a photo on Saturday of his "alleged co-conspirators" driving around his estate on motorbikes. Twitter user Ben Gracewood asked Dotcom if he spends all day driving around and posing for photos, adding "I could live like that."
Dotcom replied "Come over now!"
Gracewood, Dotcom, and several others spent the rest of the afternoon splashing around in the pool, eating, drinkin...

FedEx gets amped about electrifying its step vans
Like UnlikeIf, like ours, your ears are finely tuned to the sound of the delivery van's engine, prepare for lots more collection slips. FedEx is working with gas-to-EV converters, Amp, to switch some of its wagons over to the electric side of the fence. At the moment, just two vehicles will be ditching the diesel, but should the Washington, D.C.-based testing go well, it could lead to a further 9000 vans getting the petro-snip. Amp Electric Vehicles identified fleets such as FedEx's as ideal candidates for the conversion, based on the shorter daily range requirements and typically poor gas mileage. Good news and all, and we admire the firm's forward thinking, but how are we going to hear our latest imp...

Microsoft clears the air: No plans to build phones of its own
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Following Microsoft's big Surface tablet and Windows Phone 8 announcements last week, many have speculated that the company was also planning on building its own smartphones in addition to its own tablets. It doesn't appear that this is the case, however, as Microsoft has revealed that it has no plans to build a phone of its own.
Speaking to Information Week, Microsoft's senior marketing manager for Windows Phone, Greg Sullivan, stated that the company does not intend to produce its own phone hardware. "We have a strong ecosystem of partners that we are very satisfied with," clarified Sullivan.

T-Mobile, Verizon sign spectrum deal to grow 4G network
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon WirelessT-Mobile
Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile signed an agreement covering a range of AWS spectrum swaps and sales that should improve 4G coverage for both companies.
While the deal concerns various AWS spectrum exchanges between both carriers, the net result will be improved spectrum holdings for T-Mobile in 15 of the county's top 25 markets and reaching 60 million customers.
Verizon will gain holdings that cover 22 million customers, as well as an undisclosed cash payment from T-Mobile.
"This agreement will provide T-Mobile with critical AWS spectrum, enhancing both network capacity and performance and allowing us to meet the growing consumer demand for 4G mobile broadband," T-Mobile CEO and President Phi...

Microsoft flatly denies any interest in building Windows Phone devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Last week we reported on a rumor from industry OEMs that Microsoft was sourcing someone to build a Windows Phone. It wasn’t know whether that would be for some sort of development platform, or a retail product, but some industry analysts thought it was more likely that Microsoft would bring a phone to market (and based on your comments, more than one of you were hoping it would pan out as well).
Microsoft flatly denied today that they have any interest in doing so, telling InformationWeek that they have no plans to manufacture their own phone. This is of some note, as Microsoft usually denies all rumors as a matter of policy. We’d guess that they don’t want to rile their Windows OEMs with si...

Two LulzSec members plead guilty to hacking charges
Like UnlikeBack in March, notorious hacking group LulzSec was brought down by the FBI following cooperation from the group’s leader, Hector Xavier Monsegur aka “Sabu”. Four members of the group that were arrested appeared today at Southwark Crown Court to plead against the charges brought against them, with two admitting that they hacked high profile websites and the other two denying all the charges.
Jake David, aka Topiary, and Ryan Cleary both admitted that they were part of the LulzSec group, but overall only pleaded guilty to two out of the four charges brought against them. Ryan Ackroyd, aka Kayla, pleaded not guilty to all four charges, while an unnamed 17 year old also pleaded not guilty to all...
