RIM: Smaller 3.2" BlackBerry Curve Touch 9380 Imminent

Posted on Oct 18, 2011 by MG1

A smaller, touchscreen-only and therefore hopefully cheaper BlackBerry Curve Touch is on the way, with RIM telling its app developers to prepare for a modest 3.2" touch-only BlackBerry. It most definitely won't look like the Torch then (pictured).
According to BlackBerry's own developer site, the Curve Touch 9380 will run its touchscreen at a middle-of-the-road smartphone resolution of 480x360, producing a screen pixel density count of 189ppi.
The RIM tech site also makes mention of the 9790, your more traditional 2.44" portrait/QWERTY BB model type, which is a phone previous internet leaks knew as the Bold Bellagio 9790.

RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis has already apologized for last week's widespread BlackBerry outage, but apparently, that wasn't enough. Today, the manufacturer announced that it's offering customers a full slate of "premium apps" for free, in the hopes of earning back some of the goodwill it lost following that mysterious blackout. In a statement, the company said the gesture is "an expression of appreciation" for the patience that many BlackBerry users demonstrated during the incident, with Lazaridis adding that his company remains "committed to providing the high standard of reliability" that consumers have come to expect. For now, the company's offering a total of 12 apps (collectively valued ...

RIM: BlackBerry fully restored but no compensation news

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

“You expect better of us, I expect better of us.” So RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis opened the company’s apologetic BlackBerry press conference this morning, before swiftly pointing out that services have now been “fully restored”. As for compensation, however, fellow co-CEO Jim Balsillie said RIM has no idea, at present, what or even if that could be “Our focus has been 100-percent on getting services restored,” he told investors and journalists, “that’s something we’re going to focus on now, but it hasn’t been our priority overnight.”

RIM says all BlackBerry services have been restored

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

During another press call this morning to address the worldwide BlackBerry service outage, RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis announced that all BlackBerry services have been restored across the world, including internet, email, and BlackBerry Messenger. He reiterated the company's earlier statements that a hardware failure in Europe is what caused the outage, and that failure caused a backup in the system, creating service problems for users in other parts of the world. RIM pointed out that its services have had 99.97 percent uptime over the past 18 months, though that fact is probably not all that comforting to the users who have experienced outages for nearly four days.

RIM has produced a few white BlackBerry handsets before and now you can add the Curve 9360 to that list.
Orange UK currently has the white BlackBerry Curve 9360 listed as coming soon. It will be free on a monthly plan. The Curve 9360 is an entry-level device that...

BlackBerry Outage Continues, May Be Spreading

RIM can’t seem to get back on its feet. Amidst falling sales, and shareholder discontent, the smartphone make is now dealing with a three-day long service outage that seems to be spreading, rather than abating. The outage started in the Middle East as well as parts of Europe and Asia, but now reports indicate that it may also be affecting some US and Canadian users.
Unlike other smartphone platforms, RIM manages the flow of data and service for all its devices through its own back end. This allows lowers speed connections to still result in acceptable levels of performance, but when the servers go offline, RIM is stuck with a lot of unhappy customers.

RIM has revealed that BlackBerry owners in the Americas have also been hit by intermittent service woes. There have been network delays that ape the issues the company has faced in the UK and Europe these last few days. In short, as our US chums might say, "the problem goes global".

In addition, the company released the following service update for BlackBerry owners in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and ...

T-Mobile slices the upgrade price of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 starting today

Posted on Oct 13, 2011 by MG1

According to some photographs of T-Mobile pricing documents, the mobile operator is cutting the 2-year upgrade price of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 from $299.99 to $249.99 starting today. The nation's fourth largest carrier had given the handset the highest price out of the three major U.S. carriers offering the model. Following the price cut, T-Mobile's price will match the $249.99 subsidized price Verizon is asking for the CDMA variant of the phone, the BlackBerry Bold 9930. That still is $50 more than the $199.99 that Sprint is charging for the BlackBerry Bold 9930.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 offers a combination of a physical QWERTY keyboard-considered by many to be the best physical QWERTY e...

BlackBerry maker RIM has issued a statement as to why its users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and other parts of the world have struggled with email browsing, and using BBM over the last two days.
In a statement issued to Pocket-lint late on Tuesday night RIM said:
"The messaging and browsing delays being experienced by BlackBerry users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina were caused by a core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure. Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested.
As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and ...

BlackBerry Internet Outage Hits Europe, Middle East, Africa

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

RIM seems to be learning very quickly that when it rains, it pours. Word of a BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) outage quickly began making the rounds this morning, leaving (once) loyal customers in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East without email and web access.
This is the second outage RIM has dealt with in as many months: their popular BBM service went down this past September, shortly after the company released their disappointing quarterly financials.
For what it’s worth, it’s business as usual for corporate users as BlackBerry Enterprise services don’t seem to have suffered the same fate.
In usual RIM fashion, they’ve acknowledged the issue through their official Twitter account, but...
