BlackBerry Bold 9900 in white spotted and photographed

What is it about the color white that makes a handset look more luxurious? Take the BlackBerry Bold 9900 for instance. With a physical portrait-oriented QWERTY keyboard that many call the best ever attached to a cell phone, the device in black looks every inch the flagship model that it currently is for RIM. Make the casing and keys in white and the BlackBerry Bold 9900 looks even better.

The white BlackBerry Bold 9900 in the photo was spotted at a technical exhibition in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. But this is not the first time that we have seen this model looking pale. Back in August, a T-Mobile reseller in Hungary showed a slide that had both the b...

RIM buys cloud services company for reported $100 million

RIM buys cloud services company for reported $100 million

RIM has announced that it has purchased NewBay, a white-label cloud services company. The Canadian smartphone maker did not provide details about the purchase, but some have reported that the deal is worth $100 million.
RIM will likely use NewBay's experience with cloud-based media management to strengthen the BlackBerry smartphone platform's cloud offerings. NewBay's cloud management service lets users store pictures, videos, and other types of media on remote servers, which they can then access with their devices. It also lets them easily share the stored content with others. NewBay already has agreements with various carriers to provide cloud services, including T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon Wi...

Vodafone considering RIM acquisition?

Vodafone considering RIM acquisition?

Posted on Oct 07, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

RIM’s stock jumped yesterday on the rumour that Vodafone is considering acquiring the maker of BlackBerry. RIM’s market share is continuing to dwindle, and if the launch of QNX-powered smartphones early next year doesn’t pan out, they may very well be in the market for acquisition.
I find the rumour a little hard to swallow. Sure, service providers will partner up with manufacturers to help build the kind of phone they want to see on shelves, but how often do they take complete control of the manufacturing process? Of course, it’s possible that Vodafone is just interested in RIM’s back-end infrastructure, which provides secure, compressed, and speedy data delivery to BlackBerry devices. With...

Vodafone rumored to be mulling RIM buy

Vodafone rumored to be mulling RIM buy

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

Shares of Research In Motion stock are popping for the second day in a row on rumors that the company may be looking for a buyer. RIM’s stock was up as much as 14% on Wednesday morning as mysteriously sourced rumors suggested U.K. carrier Vodafone is considering an acquisition. Investors see RIM quickly running out of cash — the vendor burned through more than half of its $2.9 billion in cash during the second fiscal quarter alone — and analysts still aren’t convinced management can right the ship. Some still see promise in RIM’s upcoming QNX lineup however, and the company could certainly hold tremendous value for a potential buyer. Market rumors last week suggested that RIM was pulling the...

RIM plans to give out BlackBerry PlayBooks for free to attendees of DevCon

RIM plans to give out BlackBerry PlayBooks for free to attendees of DevCon

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

Who says that developer conferences are boring? Well, we’d bet that attendees of BlackBerry DevCon Americas, which is being held between October 18th to the 20th in San Francisco, are going to be ecstatic knowing what’s in store for them at the event.
From the sound of it, RIM will be handing out free BlackBerry PlayBook tablets to each and every registered attendee at the event. Typically, attendees are normally showered with smaller gifts such as sweatshirts, jackets, or some other wearable apparel, but this time around, they’re really spicing things up. In fact, this is the second time this year that RIM is going handing out PlayBooks seeing that they did the same thing for BlackBerry Wor...

Playbook Price Cut, $300 Made Permanent — Too Little Too Late?

Posted on Oct 03, 2011 by MG3

Last weekend we noticed that RIM was experimenting with a $200 price cut in Canada, however, with the unveiling of the Amazon Fire the company has decided to not just move its discount across the border, but make it permanent. The 16GB entry level playbook now starts at only $299 for Wi-Fi only, and goes up by $100 increments when moving up to the 32GB, and 64GB configurations.

BlackBerry PlayBook now just $299.99 and up from Best Buy

Posted on Sep 30, 2011 by MG1

Following news that multiple retailers across North America have begun to offer deep discounts on Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook, retail giant Best Buy is now offering the best deal yet on RIM’s troubled tablet. BGR reported on Monday that retailers such as Staples and Office Depot were offering sale pricing on the PlayBook, and Best Buy Canada was among the shops mentioned. Now, Best Buy here in the U.S. is following suit and knocking $200 off of its PlayBook pricing. Unlike other retailers, however, Best Buy is taking off the full $200 at the point of purchase, rather than offering a $100 discount and a $100 gift card like other retailers, including Best Buy Canada, are doing. RIM calls PlayBook discontinuation 'pure fiction'

Posted on Sep 30, 2011 by MG1

Research In Motion on Thursday responded to a market rumor suggesting that production of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet had been stopped, and it was considering an exit from the tablet market. “RIM doesn’t typically comment on rumors, but any suggestion that the BlackBerry PlayBook is being discontinued is pure fiction,” a RIM spokesperson told BGR in an email. “RIM remains highly committed to the tablet market.” BGR reported earlier on a note from Collins Stewart analyst John Vinh stating that RIM’s manufacturing partner Quanta had been ordered to discontinue production of the BlackBerry PlayBook in light of weak sales. Vinh also said that RIM was canceling development of future tablets.

Verizon expects Windows Phone to overtake BlackBerry

Verizon expects Windows Phone to overtake BlackBerry

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG1

Despite the poor sales of Microsoft’s Windows Phone devices, Verizon seems to have more confidence in the platform than RIM’s BlackBerry. During the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam expressed his opinion on which platform would emerge as the third major mobile operating system and he believed that Windows Phone would overtake BlackBerry.
McAdam echoed the sentiment of other carriers, which feel that the mobile space will ultimately boil down to three major platforms. At the beginning of this year, the top mobile ecosystems were Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, Nokia’s Symbian, RIM’s BlackBerry, and HP’s WebOS. At present, Nokia has abandoned Symbian for Windows ...

RIM has 800,000 PlayBooks in excess inventory

Posted on Sep 22, 2011 by MG1

Research in Motion (RIM) has nearly 800,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets sitting idle in inventory. RIM had $1.372 billion in inventory at the end of last quarter, up from $618 million at the end of February, according to findings from the Guardian.
RIM’s PlayBook was manufactured by Quanta Computer at their Taiwan factory. Fubon Securities analyst Arthur Liao said that the company had shipped 1.5 million PlayBooks in the first half. Production has declined significantly as of late as RIM struggles with excess inventory.
Last week RIM announced they had only shipped 200,000 tablets in the second quarter. Earlier accounts from the company say they shipped 500,000 PlayBooks in the first quarter...

The BlackBerry PlayBook looked good at the very begining, but than big issues got discovered and consumers did not catch on. RIM has supposedly sold less than 800,000 PlayBooks in the first half of 2011. It is not clear though how many of them are actually in consumer hands. Digitimes reports that Quanta Computer is supposed to significantly cut back the production lines for the Playbook.
According to the report Quanta Computer set up a special production faciility in Taiwan with 2,000 workers to make sure the Chinese to not clone the Playbook. Quanta is said to cut back the work force by 50% and shipment of Playbooks already dropped to 100,000 units in the third quarter.
