RIM now working on only one BlackBerry 10 smartphone; Colt, Milan cancelled

RIM now working on only one BlackBerry 10 smartphone; Colt, Milan cancelled

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG3

We already reported that the BlackBerry Colt — the handset that was originally intended to be the Research In Motion’s first BlackBerry 10 smartphone — has been cancelled. In addition, we have heard from multiple sources that the BlackBerry Milan that leaked last month was in fact was never a QNX smartphone, but a BlackBerry 7 device with a slightly different design identity. Regardless, the Milan has been cancelled as well. We’re told carriers balked at the idea of carrying a BlackBerry 7 phone so similar to the BlackBerry Torch at this point in time.

New sale cuts BlackBerry PlayBook price by as much as $400

New sale cuts BlackBerry PlayBook price by as much as $400

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG1

Research In Motion’s debut tablet has been something of a disappointment for the Waterloo, Ontario-based vendor. While the slate showed promise, it failed to offer potential users a compelling reason to choose it over the iPad or an Android tablet, and RIM would end up taking a $485 million charge in the third fiscal quarter due to unsold PlayBook inventory. Sale pricing ahead of the holidays last year seemingly helped RIM and its distribution partners clear out some stock, however, as the company is once again offering discounts on its QNX-based tablet. While pricing starts at $299 rather than $199 this time around, all three PlayBook models cost $299, which means the 64GB version can be ha...

RIM faces legal strife over BBM name

RIM faces legal strife over BBM name

Poor old RIM: even during the season of goodwill to all men, the company cannot catch a break and is being dragged back to court over the use of the BBM trademark.
BBM is shorthand for BlackBerry Messenger, RIM's 'Berry to 'Berry instant messaging service, but it's also the name of a Toronto-basee broadcast industry group called BBM Canada (obviously).
"We want our name back. I find it kind of amazing that this wouldn't have been thought about before they decided to use the name. The same thing goes for BBX," said Jim MacLeod, CEO of BBM Canada.

RIM Denies BlackBerry 10 Delay Allegations: Claims Are “Uninformed”

RIM Denies BlackBerry 10 Delay Allegations: Claims Are “Uninformed”

Posted on Dec 23, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

I’ll admit to lobbing a few mortars at RIM (alright, maybe more than a few), but it looks like things may be even worse than expected. BGR reported earlier today that RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis lied about the the reason their first BlackBerry 10 devices would be delayed even later into 2012.
Lazaridis said during RIM’s recent earnings call that they were waiting for a specific dual-core LTE chipset to be available before their new BlackBerrys would see the light of day in late 2012. It was a strange announcement, considering that RIM has never really fared well in the specs arms race, although they I don’t blame them for trying. What I do blame them for is dragging their feet when it comes to...

Amazon, Microsoft, and Nokia were all interested in buying RIM

Amazon, Microsoft, and Nokia were all interested in buying RIM

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Canadian smartphone maker Research in Motion is in deep trouble. They haven’t had a hit device in their product portfolio since disco was at the top of the charts. The PlayBook, RIM’s response to the iPad, was such an abysmal failure that the company lost almost half a billion dollars to get it off the market. RIM’s next generation operating system, dubbed BBX, had to be renamed to BlackBerry 10 after the company that owns the BBX trademark filed a complaint. And to make matters even worse, RIM recently announced that they’re not going to ship any smartphones running BlackBerry 10 until the end of 2012. Yet despite all that RIM is an acquisition target. According to Reuters, Amazon hired an ...

Blackberry App world takes up the 5th position followed by the Nokia Ovi store.

Of note is that Marketplace showed the biggest growth of over 400% year on year, and that the Marketplace for Windows Mobile never passed 2500 available apps.

Foursquare version 3.5 for BlackBerry features lists, in-line photos, and more

Even though it might seem as though the Foursquare app for BlackBerry might be lagging behind its contemporaries on other platforms, it’s nonetheless getting updated bringing forth some much-wanted new features.

Moving up to version 3.5, the latest software update for the Foursquare app hosts a few new features that some will find tantalizing, but more importantly, it’s simply ever so nice seeing the app getting its fair share of love. Specifically, it now boasts the popular Lists feature, which allows users to discover and creates lists of things to – whether it be nearby or elsewhere. Additionally, it now offer in-line photos that enables you to see your fiends’ check-ins with photos att...

Amazon Considered Acquiring RIM Over The Summer

Amazon Considered Acquiring RIM Over The Summer

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

To say that RIM has had it rough these past few months is a understatement, but according to a new report from Reuters, it may not have had to go through these trials alone. In a surprising twist, Amazon was reportedly considering a RIM acquisition as recently as this past summer.

According to Reuters, Amazon had tasked an investment bank with exploring the possibility of a RIM buyout, although their sources don’t mention how far both parties were from finalizing a deal. The talks seemed to be largely informal in nature so it may have been nothing more than an open-ended meeting of the minds, but man — what a deal that would’ve been.

RIM delays QNX-based BlackBerry smartphones until late 2012

Posted on Dec 19, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

Research In Motion has announced that its QNX-based smartphones have been delayed until late 2012 -- well after its originally slated first quarter unveiling. The news came during an investor call last night and marks the latest in a string of upsets for the apologetic handset maker. "We ask for your patience and confidence," said co-CEO Mike Lazaridis.
In addition to revealing its BlackBerry 10 setback, RIM said it would ship only 11 to 12 million smartphones during the year's busiest shopping quarter -- an estimate that would represent the company's first sequential decline during the holiday period in six years. It sold 14.1 million in the previous quarter and 14.8 million in the fourth q...

Here is how BlackBerry owners can get rid of Carrier IQ

Here is how BlackBerry owners can get rid of Carrier IQ

Posted on Dec 19, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

Soon after the Carrier IQ drama escalated, RIM took the stand and announced that it does not pre-load the controversial software in any of its smartphones. However, that did not stop some carriers (ahem, T-Mobile) from installing it on the BlackBerrys that they sell.
Fortunately, removing Carrier IQ from a BlackBerry smartphone is easier than one would assume. It turns out that one can simply follow the instructions for removing third-party software, which are available on the BlackBerry Knowledge Base. Located in the Application Management section under the Options menu, the software that users need to look for is named “IQ Agent”.

RIM: BlackBerry 10 smartphones won't arrive until end of 2012

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

Some unfortunate news was revealed for those BlackBerry addicts who've waited patiently for a QNX-based smartphone from RIM. The company's co-CEO, Mike Lazaridis, reports that, due to a critical chipset that's not expected to be available in production quantity until mid-next year, we're unlikely to see a BlackBerry 10 device emerge until late in 2012. We know, ouch. When asked during today's conference call about the delay, the company leaders defended the decision and reiterated that a suitable alternative wouldn't be available that delivers a sufficient balance of processing power and battery longevity. As RIM's fans cope with the latest news, the firm promises that it's continuing to wor...

RIM reports Q3 2011 earnings: $5.2b revenue, $265m net income and 14.1 million handsets shipped

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

News out of Waterloo isn't all bad today, as Research in Motion has revealed its financial results for the third quarter of 2011. While the company previously had to scale back its earlier earnings projections of $5.6 billion in the quarter, it's apparent the firm came close to meeting that mark. After close of the markets today, RIM reported $5.2 billion in revenue with $265 million in net income and 14.1 million handsets shipped. The company was only able to eke out 150,000 PlayBook tablets during this time frame, however, which no doubt contributed to these reduced numbers. Unfortunately, the market hasn't taken so kindly to the revelation, as RIM's stock has fallen seven-percent in after...

BlackBerry Curve 9360 gets mobile hotspot thanks to leaked OS 7.1

BlackBerry Curve 9360 gets mobile hotspot thanks to leaked OS 7.1

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

Following closely with recent leaks for the Bold 9900 and Torch 9810, the entry-level BlackBerry Curve 9360 now has a leaked operating system upgrade which will enable mobile hotspot functions.
BlackBerry users have been waiting for this function for a long time, and even now seems a little late to the party, what with BlackBerry 10 right around the corner. It would be entirely laughable if RIM managed to launch their new platform without mobile hotspot, but given how they’ve been slogging on bringing new PlayBook functions to market, I wouldn’t be remotely surprised if there were a few function gaps in RIM’s next-gen smartphones.

BlackBerry Bold 9790 will be available as a SIM-free option in the UK starting on January 9

BlackBerry Bold 9790 will be available as a SIM-free option in the UK starting on January 9

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Last month, we reported that RIM’s BlackBerry Bold 9790 was expected to become available in the UK sometime in January, following its scheduled release in Indonesia and Singapore this month, but we’ve been in the dark on an exact date to that reality.
Fortunately, UK consumers are now given a clear date of January 9th – that’s when the SIM-free version of the latest Bold handset is expected to become available for purchase in the good old UK. Interested in picking up this one? Well, retailer MobileFun will begin accepting orders for the smartphone on that date, where it’s given a price tag of £399.95 ($624). Indeed, it’s rather pricey to say the least, but considering it’s a SIM-free version...

Clues in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 suggest new BlackBerry tablet is coming with LTE support

Clues in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 suggest new BlackBerry tablet is coming with LTE support

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

According to N4BB, clues found in the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, due out in February, suggest that a new BlackBerry tablet is coming with support for LTE connectivity and a screen resolution of 1280 x 768. The hint that the next RIM produced tablet would have support for LTE came from images found on the BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 OS Developer Beta. Icons were found showing a 4G and a 4G LTE logo. These are the top banner images that you would find alongside other notifications. RIM had been planning for a 4G version of the original PlayBook with Sprint originally saying that it would release a WiMax enabled version until they decided against offering such a device.
