Research In Motion has changed the name of its next-generation operating system to BlackBerry 10 following a trademark dispute over the BBX name. BBX was originally introduced as RIM’s next mobile software platform that will be deployed on the company’s tablets and smartphones. Anti-jailbreak BlackBerry PlayBook patch cracked in one day

RIM's attempt to stomp out jailbreaking proved ineffective early Wednesday. Less than a day after posting a 1.0.8.6067 update to cover the security exploit used to open up the OS, a version 2.1 beta update for the DingleBerry root has come to get around the patch. Users have to install the crack before they apply the patch, but they just need to run a single command-line task to get root-level access.

RIM fires its two drunk executives that caused Air Canada flight u-turn at the North Pole

The two RIM execs - George Campbell and Paul A. Wilson - who got drunk on an Air Canada flight to Beijing have been discharged from the company.
They caused such a stir during flight, that the crew was forced to make a U-turn at the North Pole and bring the plane back to Vancouver where the guys were arrested after being handcuffed by the crew and passengers to their seats. The judge ordered them to pay 35, 878 Canadian dollars each to the airline, and placed them on probation.
Needless to say, RIM was not happy with the developments and issued an official statement condemning the behavior, and saying that it does not comply with the company's integrity, so the execs were fired.

BlackBerry PlayBook rooted, Android Market is a go

After a brief lead-up period, the Dingleberry jailbreak for the BlackBerry PlayBook is now publicly available, though still in a very early beta. The exploit used to gain root access is actually pretty simple. PlayBook backup files used in the BlackBerry Desktop Software apparently aren’t signed, which means those files can be used to launch just about whatever you want on the device. So what can you do with it? Well, not too much yet, and the three guys behind Dingleberry are hoping that the developer community at large will run with this and do all sorts of neat stuff, but for now one of the devs have posted instructions on how to get the Android Market up and running on the PlayBook.

Last week we posted some videos of a rooted BlackBerry PlayBook from the collaborative minds of Neuralic, Xpvqus, and Cmwdotme a.k.a. Chris Wade. Now, the development team behind the jailbreak tool, Dingleberry, have officially released the beta version on their project website.
As we previously reported, the trio states that the a Dingleberried PlayBook is able to stream content from Hulu and a Dingleberried Playbook running the 2.0 beta can run the Android Market and install APK files without having to convert them into BAR files.

RIM takes $485 million hit on the PlayBook in Q3

Just how much is the PlayBook costing RIM? The BlackBerry-maker revealed that it will be taking a $485 million hit in the third fiscal quarter, thanks to the QNX-packing tablet. The charge reflects flagging sales on the PlayBook, which moved some 500,000 units in its first quarter, followed by 250,000 and 150,000 in the following two. In spite of such numbers, the Canadian smartphone manufacturer remains committed to the tablet, which has seen some healthy price drops in recent weeks, in hopes of staying competitive amongst new crop of budget tablets.

BlackBerry PlayBook rooted, may eventually run full Android

An exploit found in the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet a few months ago has begun to bear fruit for a trio of scrappy developers. The rooting application, which will be made publicly available within the next week, will be called Dingleberry, and lets you do a few cool things. Hulu, which had previously been blocked when visited through the BlackBerry browser, is now accessible. Another neat, though less exciting possibility is use of the PlayBook’s LED, which so far only blinks when powering up or charging when the device is turned off. We reported this morning on the announcement of Research in Motion’s new Mobile Fusion IT product, which will bring greatly simplified mobile device management to enterprise customers. RIM held a business webcast on it later in the day, and fleshed out both the offering itself and RIM's perspective on the future of mobile devices in the workplace.
Mobile Fusion will allow 10,000 mobile devices to be controlled from a single control console, can handle multiple devices per user, and can manage iOS, Android, and QNX devices in addition to current BlackBerry devices.

The BlackBerry PlayBook is looking increasingly like going the way of the HP TouchPad, with RIM offering the tablet to employees at a huge discount.
RIM's latest desperate attempt to shift some of the crippling inventory currently launguishing in warehouses sees the company offer PlayBooks for just $99 to all employees - thats about £62.

It looks like Best Buy over-promised to customers eager to snag a BlackBerry PlayBook for $300 off. Despite having the same attractive offer as many retailers over Black Friday and the weekend, Best Buy appears to be unable to fulfill many (and some say all) orders of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Prices were as low as $200, so as you can expect there was a lot of interest in the tablet as a holiday gift. The launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9790 in Indonesia's capital of Jakarta on Friday gave RIM a rare Apple-like level of demand that also took an unfortunate turn. After appearing in the Telus winter catalog earlier this month, the BlackBerry Curve 9380 is now shipping from the Canadian carrier. The 3.2-inch all-touch smartphone is priced at $49.99 with a three-year contract or $369.99 without one, and the Telus and BlackBerry sites confirm its 480 x 360 screen, 806MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and 5-megapixel camera. Sadly, the Telus version of the 9380 only comes with 512MB of internal storage, not 1GB as previously announced, although it does include a 2GB microSD card.

RIM's first all-screen Curve has sashayed over to the FCC. Two models of the BlackBerry Curve 9380, the REA70UW and REB70UW, are included in the latest filing, which goes into typical laborious detail on radio frequencies and the like. Thankfully, those myriad charts and graphs reveal support for WCDMA band IV, meaning that the phone plays nice with T-Mobile's 3G network. Let's just hope that, if given the chance to strut its stuff in the US market, it follows the Curve family tradition of arriving keenly priced.
