OEM major Foxconn, graphics and ARM processor major NVIDIA, in coordination with the local government, plan to set up a new research and development center in the city of Tianjin, northern China. The three signed for establishment of the joint venture today. Heads of Foxconn and NVIDIA, Terry Guo and Jen-Hsun Huang, were present at the ceremony.
The center is slated to be dedicated for research and development in the fields of mobile terminal devices and cloud computing-based applications, and we can already see the right ingredients going into setting it up: an investment-friendly local government that provides a fertile platform and human resources, the vast expertise of Foxconn in design...

Foxconn gets orders for the next Kindle Fire

It's looking more and more like if it's good enough for Apple, it's good enough for Amazon. Not only has Amazon taken a note from Apple in building up content stores for music, video and books, but also in bringing those stores together in the ultimate content consumption device: a tablet. Granted, Amazon is using the hardware as a loss leader to sell content, whereas Apple uses the content to sell hardware, but the parallels are still there. Amazon also took a cue from Apple in making said tablet into a closed ecosystem (albeit build upon an open source project,) with content reviews and controls, in order to create a very specific experience for the user. Now, Amazon is going another step ...

Nokia putting in Windows phone orders from Foxconn also

Nokia putting in Windows phone orders from Foxconn also

Posted on Oct 06, 2011 by MG1

Last we heard Nokia would be using Compal as an ODM for the Nokia Searay.
Now Digitimes reports that Nokia has begun releasing its orders for Windows Phone 7.5-based smartphones to both Foxconn International Holdings and Compal Communications.
This is pretty good news for prospective Nokia customers, as Foxconn, who famously also ODMs the iPhone, has a reputation for high quality, unlike Compal who frankly does not.
While there is no way of knowing, given that the Searay was connected with Compal, it may be that the Nokia Sabre or Nokia Ace will be made by Foxcon instead, and represent a somewhat better device, irrespective of specs.

Foxconn's Shandong factory hit with roof fire

Another fire has hit a Foxconn factory, this time in China's Shandong province, reports say. There are no accounts of injuries, and Foxconn reports that the fire has already been extinguished. The manufacturer suggests that the fire was probably caused by abandoned pipelines left on top of the building.
Because assembly lines are said to have been undamaged, production is expected to continue as usual. Foxconn's Shandong plants produce a variety of electronics, including phones, TVs, game consoles and notebooks. Some smartphone production has been relocated to other factories in recent times.
The incident is Foxconn's second major fire this year. The first hit a plant in Chengdu, killing thr...

Another Foxconn Worker Leaps to His Death

Another Foxconn Worker Leaps to His Death

Posted on Jul 21, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Foxconn

One of the ongoing stories last year was how Foxconn workers in China were committing suicide amid reports of poor working conditions and low pay. Foxconn vowed to improve its operations, and it's been relatively quiet ever since, at least until now. According to an AFP report, a 21-year-old employee who only started working for Foxconn on June 27, jumped out of his on-site dormitory and died as a result.
No other company in the world makes more computer components than Foxconn. One of Foxconn's bigger clients is Apple, and workers are under intense pressure to keep up with demand for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad devices, as well as products from Sony, Dell, and others. Activists blamed poor...

Foxconn will build Amazon’s rumored 10.1-inch tablet, DigiTimes reported on Thursday. The Android tablet is expected to ship in 2012 according to the report, but Amazon may want to get the device out the door a bit earlier in order to to have it on store shelves in time for the holiday season. A smaller 7-inch version that was built by Quanta computer is already on its way to Amazon and, while other reports suggested it is a 9-inch tablet, that is likely the model we have heard will launch in late August or September. We broke the news that Amazon will launch a “Coyote” tablet that packs a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra processor, as well as a larger “Hollywood” tablet powered by the new quad-core K...

Foxconn to build all iPad units this year

Foxconn to build all iPad units this year

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Foxconn will be the only manufacturer to build the iPad this year, DigiTimes reported on Wednesday. There were reports earlier this week that suggested Apple had been in talks with either Pegatron or Quanta Computer as a second manufacturer in order to create enough units for the launch of a new model in September. However, Foxconn reportedly caught word of Apple’s discussions with other manufacturing outlets and was able to convince the Cupertino-based company to stick with one manufacturer… for now. Apple is expected to launch a new iPad with a higher resolution screen in September. According to rumors swirling around analyst circles and in the media, the new tablet will be dubbed the “iPa...

New Apple iPad 2 ad is out; Foxconn to move some iPad production to Brazil by September

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG3

According to Globo, Brazil's Minister of Science and Technology, Aloízio Mercadante, says that Foxconn will be starting production of the Apple iPad 2 in his country starting in September. Originally, production of the tablet was to have begun in July, but the date has been pushed back because of problems with construction of a facility and a lack of skilled labor. Foxconn sent 175 enginners to China for training, but needs to hire more than 200 before starting production of the device in Brazil.
